.'!5 3'i1 ,. The plot thickens 'Dark W'ind'. The debaters gather 'ammunition'. SPEEEH A D UHAMATIES Nlrs. Nlorris has really put Statesboro on the map in the literary world this year. The one-act play placed second in the district contest and Margaret Ann Ilekle was named Best actress in the district. The Beta Club Play was a bigger success this year than ever before. The Roaring Twentiesn came alive in the three- act comedy, Turn Back the Clock. Haryille Hendrix took top state honors in the xlaycee's l Speak for Democracy contest. The debate team gave other first district schools stiff competition. Our hats are off to the speech department and its direc- tor. Though this is only the second year that a regular course in art has been taught at SHS. the young artists have really progressed under the able super- yision of Miss Mary Lou. lfrom per- spective to pastels and portraits to pa- pier mache, the art department has put the school building into tip top shape in the way of decorations. At 2' '4- 51 Christmas especially, many professional looking scenes are found in almost every room. The only complaint from the art students is that they LlOl'l'fl'l.1YC enough time in their class. Lively' Spanish songs and dances put pep into the study' of 5Pa iSh Class 'urns 'O flag-making. the language as we mix rules of syntax with the culture of the people. limphasis has been this year on the Latin Ameri- can countries, since they' are our neighbors, and textbooks play' only' a minor role in the presentation of the subject as it is taught by our popular instructor. Why is Frances unusually interested in cooking? It has been said that it takes face powder to get a man but it takes baking powder to keep him. By' visiting the S.ll.S. llome lfc Department you will readily' agree that these girls will never have any trouble4 ilihe freshly' painted yyalls and new curtains made by the girls haye added much sparkle to the department. lihese girls dream of someday putting to good use all the practical things they are learning. ln the meantime they hate an amazing yarietx in their program and giye continual exitlence of their ability by serying lunches and dinners on important occasions and at interyals up arg- g'l1AlI'l11g'gl lay glit- colorful style shoyxs they entertain us with in as- sembly. DRIVER THAI Something new has been added: :Xnticipating .1 state requirement of adequate driver training classes in all high schools. we hate introduced these classes this year. Under the direction of Coach Hall the hoys and girls practice the principles of safe driving which they learn in various ways. including films. booklets. models. and lectures. Open on a competitive basis to the best drivers is the Spring Rodeo. We look forward to the elimination contest which will decide who is to represent Statesboro in this interesting event. Since the finalists in the contest compete for .i new car, there will be no lack of enthusiasm. S -CII:-' Parking between flags EUMMEHCI!-XL S BJEETS Xlfant a job? XVell, you couldn't do better than to enroll in Mrs. NY'endzel's commercial classes. Many of her students step out into the business world without further training. Right now the typists are busily engaged in trying to type enough words in .i minute to break the record in the District contests. I w Bookkeeping inspires less enthusiasm than typing and shorthand, but with sympathetic coaching even these problems donlt seem impossible-and at least you can look forward to the time you may need this training to check on your income tax returns!
