-fRP' Prophecy WHAT DOES MY HA D L FOR THE CLASSNOFTEIJIU POR FIFTEEN LONG YEARS I had l1ved m dreams of the dear old days at Statesboro Hrgh and the frlends I knew there One ramy afternoon mn the wmter of 1951 as I sat musmg xt was easy enough to drlft away xnto a lrfe hke dream whnch recalled the fam1l1ar faces of the class of 36 Dr1v1ng lensurely along through the mountams of North Carolma I came to a small exclusxve hotel Feelmg somehow drawn toward the lovely httle place I parked and strolled 1nto the lobby Imagxne my surprlse to find the two clerks on duty who mlght have been pos1ng for some haberdashery ad-so styhsh was the1r appearance to be Olney Brown and Gerald dj I Groover Before my breath returned I found bowmg before me 2 our old Jamtor nm He told me Lrlhan Mosely had just arrnved W r and after a gratlfymg talk over old t1mes she and I declded to 54- travel on together Before leavmg however we all had a long talk and I found out a few thmgs I had not known about some of our classmates It seems that Mary and New York and had the able asslstance of Marne Anne and Ruth 1n servmg the c1ty s soclety leaders Also located 1n New York were urelle and Iames who had become head surgeons 1n the Bellv1ew Hosp1tal Competent nurses on the staff there were Annette Gene and Alfred Merle When we finally tore ourselves away from our comfortable surroundmgs we must have rushed away down the mountamsnde wlth too much enthus1asm for to our horror we were soon pnled up on the mountamsrde trymg to extrlcate ourselves from what turned out to be a rather dangerous wreck At any rate we were threatened by the other autolsts mvolved wnth a heavy damage sult so we began to look around for lawy rs A passxng car happened to contarn an old fr1end who was now Judge B H Ramsey of Ph1ladelph1a After an mvestrgatlon he as sured us our mterests would be cared for by hrs law Hrm whlch also contanned as members Col George Preston and Senator Frank Olhff Thankmg our lucky stars that we were unhurt and able to go on we stopped ln the next large town for new dresses smce we felt we showed the ravages of the trxp too much to go on Walkmg up the ma1n street and wondermg wh1ch shop to enter we saw the famnlrar names Akxns and Smlth Of course our cur1os1ty led us straight xhto the presence of Mary Sue and Nora Bob W 1th all thelr old trme pep they went to work to make us presentable As If was nearmg closlng trme we wanted for the proprletors to accompany us Nora Bob sa1d she would dr1ve as she had a surprxse for us As we drove down a lovely shady street she slowed down before a pretty bungalow where a woman and man were seated 1n a lawn swrng We joyfully recogmzed Wmona and as we hurrled to greet her and her husband we felt her welcome even before she 1n I vxted us to stay some days Wxth her For the even1ng s enter 4' 'J 5 so i .- A . . As we reached the Hfth grade we had grown so tall m henghr and knowledge that at trmes we began to shed tears regrettmg our prrmary days We drd not shed enough tears however to swrm nn luke Ahce because we knew that we stall had harder subjects to conquer Whxle nn the slxth grade we looked as nf we were all astomshed dumbfounded ammals of Wonderland gathered around Mnss Sallxe f Z lnstemng to her wrld adventurous tales Drawmg near the end of the seventh grade we grew as large as Alnce dld whale vxsxtmg Wonderland s Rabblt home We felt that all we had to do to get control of all was to stretch our arms and grab We soon began to shrmk Q A 5 1' awe -5 X 1 f N4 'X l Z-N Rf! ' QC agam when we stumped on Algebra W X had to go to the wnse to seek advrce so X i we m1ght know whxch way to turn nn il! the hall of knowledge Our advnce proved about as successful to us as Alxces drd from the caterprllar We began to feel our natural selves agam when we were mtroduced to Scnence We nursed nt and cared for nt as Alxce cared for the baby of the Duchess whxle plates and dxshes crashed about her After carmg for nt fm 91 so tenderly many of our grades turned out as Alnce s baby a pxg Q . .. , . Prophecy tamment she carrxed us to hear Ray Akxns and h1s dance orchestra W were dellghted to find Ray had won the radno dnstmctxon wh1ch m hrgh school days had belonged to Wayne Kmg Wxth hrs orchestra Dons Brannen starred as a tap dancer The next day as we pourneyed along toward Washmgton we were attracted toward what seemed to be a mammoth demonstrat1on for such a small v1l lage Frantlc shouts mmgled w1th the musxc of the band and we motxoned to one Slde to make way for the process1on Wh1ch to our amazement was headed by the Hon Vlfgll Roblnson candxdate for governor of V1rg1n1a We finally managed to secure a word wnth hrs campalgn managers B W J Gordon and Rueben They were so exclted over the seemmg success of thelr campalgn that our conversatlon was far from sat1sfactory Rxdlng along through another small V1rg1n1a town I was at tracted by a sxgn Wh1ch read Floyd Pearson Pamless Dentlst Teeth Extracted as You S1t I declded to consult Dr Pearson about some work I needed to have done and was met and efliclently cared for by hrs office nurse Helen Lamer At the stenographer s desk sat Ehse and she told us Lester B1ll and Emory were also famous dentxsts and people came for mlles to enjoy the1r Work Next day as we entered Washmgton we passed a large alrport whxch we later learned was run by Marxe and Joyce who were both accom pllshed av1ators Gomg on 1nto Washmgton we regxstered at a hotel encountered Pauhne who was there wlth her husband who had come to Washmgton to serve on some adv1sory commxttee con nected wxth Cuban affa1rs A lnttle later as we wandered rather diy I annlessly through the zoo We came face to face wlth Curtls who was now head ammal tamer Durmg the evemng It was our pleasure to wltness an ex Q h1b1t1on performance by some famous Olymplc stars Elton Q and R L were stnll leaders 1n the lugh d1v1ng L Havmg seen so many of our frxends Lxlllan Paulme and I decrded to have Ray s Orchestra come up for an evemng and we d have a brg i.H'---- Alumm at the Mayflower Hotel It was necessary to use the rad1o to reach some of our classmates but we stopped at nothmg to make It At last the great day arrlved and what a thrxll to see all the old faces agam' Even Mnss Mary Lou was prevalled upon to come up and lead the grand march It was truly a gala affanr As the notes of the orchestra playmg a plann t1ve melody as a farewell seemed to grow d1m and hazy I gradually came to myself and found that I had been asleep 1n my I cha1r for an hour and my own radlo was furmshmg the musxcal sett1ng for my dream . . . . . e - 1 , . ., - , l 0 . . .
