Iust prior to the 1972 presidential election, the Academy's students were treated to a lively discussion between Republican Frank I. Biondolillo and Terence H. Benbow. As it tumed out, their discussion provided much more excitement than the election itself. Dr. Biondolillo, representing President Nixon, began with a smooth, calm, but definite attack on the policies of George McGovern. He em- phasized the inconsistencies that riddled the Democratic candidate's political views and cited instances where McGovern appeared to have directly contradicted himself or his col- leagues. 1 Mr. Benbow was animated and high-spirited in his defense of the candidacy of George Mc- Govern. He rejected the microphone quickly and with this characteristic gesture began a description of George McGovern, the man. Mr. Benbow alluded to the sensitivity and per- ception of McGovern and his desire to unite the nation, divided for so long by the incum- bent's policies Cforeign and domesticl The Academy students listened as the friend- ly smiles of the two men dissolved into charges and counter-charges. During the question! answer period following the individual presen- tations, the students with their usual loaded questions, initiated a heated discussion that went on through lunch. Finally the two men parted cordially and the students left the gym for an abbreviated lunch period and an elec- tion that was to be almost anticlimatic.
