HETADMASTEIFS ADDRESS I join all the faculty and staff in wishing each of you well as you leave our small community and go on to build your lives elsewhere. We have tried to help you accumulate the essential intellectual hardware, but more im- portantly, we hope we have succeeded in helping you to develop the basic strength of character you will need to cope with the frustrations which you will surely face individually, and as a generation. There is a great deal wrong with American society in the 70'sy there are some very ugly areas in our life. At the same time, never have our shortcom- ings been so thoroughly exposed, researched, and organized against. Never, in my recollection of our country's history has there been such an assault mounted at every level against inequity. But corrective measures which will have a lasting impact will not be constructed by those who cannot wait. The builders, as has been invariably the case through history, will be those who possess the quality the Romans defined and respected above all others- qravitas, meaning patience, solidity, weight of judgement. Our country has never been a frozen, rigid society, caught in conformity. If we live in a web of conforming laws and regulations, it is because we are so individualistic, so infinitely varied in our ideas, desires, ambitions and fears, and so free to express them and act upon them. Conformity? Mass-minded- ness? You must go to the totalitarian or primitive societies to find these phe- nomena. Those whofdespair of individual freedom, or of public action to solve col- lective problems should keep in mind that today we have more freedom to speak out, to organize and to question authority than would have been per- missible years agop but redress of social ills cannot be immediate precisely because so many groups, interests and points of view conflict. Our freedom will be imperiled only if it turns into license. There can be no personal or collective life worth living in the absence of moderation. Those who have gone before us since the time of the ancient Greeks have had to learn and relearn this. The School, through its adherence to the Athenian principle, and through the collective experience of the faculty, has tried to prepare you for the frustration which will certainly attend the coming of your own realization. It remains to us now only to wish you luck, and this we do in confidence and good heart. Peter M. Webster Headmaster
