THE FUTURE? Our parents grew up during a period when our nation was changing from an agricultural society to an industrial era. They could not have foreseen the changes that were wrought during their lifetime. The students of today who have grown up in an industrial era are in somewhat the same position of foretelling changes that they are destined to experience. Yet we all hear the phrase, ‘‘Plan for the future.’’ Planning implies that we know what the future holds for us, our families, the society. Such is not the case. But while we cannot know for certain what the future holds, there is one thing about which we can be sure. The only thing certain is change. And if our history can be used as an example, it is quite likely that changes will continue at an ever accelerated rate. As students, you have established a body of basic knowledge on which continuous learning can be built. As a member of the work force, you will be required to continue to build on this knowledge and the experiences gained. Knowing the certainty of change, a nd not the ‘“‘what, where, how, or why,’ what can we do? Can we design our future so that we are capable of understanding and per- forming at our present level and ready to move to another level or, if necessary, to another occupa- tion? We can, if we organize our lives, our future education, our work experiences so that we are best prepared to respond to the uncertainty of the nature of the changes. The question we face is: To what degree will we be willing to devote the time and effort to maintain the pace necessary to be ready for the changes that are evident? The choice is ours, the alternate most undesirable. Charles O. Whitehead President
