When a symphony orchestra blends its people and its instruments to perform the works of a great composer, the result is a presentation that is truly “in touch, in tune, and in time.” Taken as a micro- cosm of life, the symphony orchestra approaches the ideal. Its members must be in ‘“‘touch’”’ with others in the aggregation; they must be attuned to the music and, if their efforts are to be successful, each artist must be in step with the other. State Technical Institute at Memphis is, itself, a quest for the ideal. Although such a Utopian dream is unattainable marching to different drummers, the stu- dents, faculty and staff at State Tech continue to seek the unattainable and find comfort, friendship, knowledge, and satisfaction in the process.

“In touch”’ is a phrase of near limitless meanings. It is physi- cal. It is mental. It may be tender or brutal. It is both spe- cific and general. People touch with their hands. They keep ‘‘in touch”’ by telephone and by a wink of an eye, by a letter or a wave of the hand. But, being “in touch” at State Tech is a composite of all the acceptable touch modes. It is being part of an Institution that is ‘‘in touch’’ with the times and is being integral to the human scene of an educa- tional setting. ‘“‘In touch’”’ at this school is a cooperative attitude, a willingness to share, a desire to give and to take as the occasion requires. Being in touch is much more than “rolling with the flow.”’ Staying in touch with your fel- lowman requires some honest effort which is perhaps best reflected in ‘‘The Golden Rule’.
