Dustie Harriers Place 4th In NDCAC 1967 UND-EB Cross-County Team The UND-EB Cross-Country Team under the direction of Coach Ed Wickre, participated in four cross country meets during the 1967 season. Although the squad had only a fair season, the Dusties did finish fourth in the North Dakota Collegiate Athletic Conference meet. The NDCAC was won by Valley City, with Myron Loberg of Valley City being top individual finisher for the second year running,- with a time of 19:10.7. Und-EB's top finisher was Jerald Garey, a fresh- man from Harrington, Delaware. Garey placed 19th with a time of 21:25.. Five Dustie Harriers were awarded letters for the 1967 season. They are: Jerald Garey, Tadeusz Woliczko, Harvey Trapp, Wilbur Maho, and James Duffey. With all five letter winners returning next season. The Dusties expect better things in next season's competition. The 1967 Dusties football team finished the 1967 season with a one-five-and one record. They placed fifth in the North Dakota Collegiate Athletic Conference. The Dusties ranked second in rushing offense to Jamestown in the NDCAC with a 203 yard average per game. Junior fullback, Denis Quaschnick carried most of the load by gaining 631 yards in six games. Coach Harlen Krein is looking for- ward to a better year in 1968 with 18 returning lettermen. Football: Man Against Man Dirty And Demanding Abhor tries fo outrun defender for score. UND-EB 1 3 Dickinson 0 The Dusties opened the 1967 season with a 13-0 rain soaked victory over Dickinson. Both Dustie touchdowns were set up by end Bill Johnson as he took an 18 yard pass from Bill Grom to the one yard line. The second touchdown came after Johnson blocked a Dickinson punt on the 11 yard line. Denis Quaschnick scored both TD's on 1 and 3 yard runs. Quaschnick had 90 yards on 32 carries for the day. Jack Gomarcko was top tackier with 11. Stopped two Dickinson drives with fine defensive plays. Johnson turns in Jamestown runner. UND-EB 13 Jamestown 52 Jamestown College finished the sea- son undefeated and leading the nation in rushing with 376 yards a game. The Jimmies also gave UND-EB its first de- feat of the season (52-13). The only bright spot for the Dusties was the pass- ing game. Bill Johnson caught 5 passes for 115 yards and 2 touchdowns. Steve LeGrand had 2 catches for 30 yards. Johnson s TD's came on a 35-yarder from Bill Grom and a 15 yarder from Bruce Abbott. Safety Lee Alger had his best game of the year with 17 tackles. Dusties in Savage territory Grom gets off punt. UND-EB 13 Minot 19 UND-EB 7 Wahpeton 7 The Dusties had twice the yardage compiled by Wahpeton, but still had to scramble to gain a 7-7 tie with the Wild- cats. Halfback J. Hopper was the big man for the Dusties. With the Dusties trailing 7-0, Hopper blocked a Wahpeton field goal attempt from the 9 yard line. Minutes later Hopper caught a 70 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Bill Grom which tied it up 7-7. The defensive playing of Norm Baumgarn, Jack Go- marcko. Bob Homan, Ed Self, Bill Lan- genbacker, and Lee Alger tamed the Wildcats offense. The Dusties won a paper victory , but lost the ball game, 19-13, when they journeyed north to meet the MSC Beavers. UND-EB's offense led by Bill Grom with 109 yards on 25 carries was working well until they were stopped in- side Minot's 20 yard line. Grom scored both TD's on runs of one and five yards. Tom Birhanzel kicked the extra point. Lee Alger, playing linebacker instead of his regular safety spot, had 12 tackles. Grom is slowed down Defense stops Mayville Hopper looking for pitch from Grom. 1967 UND-EB Homecoming Game UND-EB 21 Mayville 28 The Dusfies saw a 14 point first quar- ter lead turn into a one-touchdown de- feat before a large UND-EB Homecoming crowd as the Mayville Comets took home an 28-21 NDCAC victory. UND-EB's two first quarter TD's came on runs of 1 and 50 yards by fullback, Dennis Quaschnick. After two second quarter TD's by Mayville the half time score was 14-14. The Dusties scored at the start of the second quarter on a 27 yard run by Quaschnick who had 142 yards on 20 carries for the day. Tom Birhanzel kicked his third extra point of the day for a 21-14 lead. Mayville came back with two TD's for a 28-21 victory. Bill Johnson, Bob Peterson, Alan Sich- meller, Don Hughes, Art Schilke, Jerry Hannemann and Steve LeGrand played a fine offensive game. Dustic defense gives no cunning room I Birhanzel is three for three. Protection falls apart. Defense stops Comets in their own territory. UND-EB 6 Valley City 27 UND-EB closed NDCAC play with a 27-6 loss to the Valley City Vikings. Und-EB outdid the Vikings in first downs 15-8, and in rushing yards 326- 227. Dusties were led again by fullback D. Quaschnick who scored the only touch- down on a 35-yard run and had 209 yards on 26 carries. Jack Gomarcko did a good job of moving the offense after quarterback Bill Grom was injured in the second quarter. UND-EB 7 General Beadle 32 UND-EB bowed to General Beadle College 32-7 in the football season wrap- up at Madison, S.D. Statistics-wise the game was almost a toss up but the Trojans marched to a 26-0 half time lead. The Dusties lone touchdown came on a seven-yard run around right end by quarterback. Jack Gomarcko following a block thrown by end Steve LeGrand. Tom Birhanzel booted the extra point. Dustie Basketball Future Bright Although the record of 5 wins and 16 losses is not a record to boast of, this year's Dusties proved to be a threat to their opponents. After getting off to a rather sluggish start, the Dusties picked up two wins after the Christmas break over Bottineau, 100-80, and Wahpeton, 69-68. After these wins the young Dusties started to show UND-EB some real fine basketball. The high point of the year was a 67-64 NDCAC victory over highly rated Mayville. This years squad had only two seniors leaving Coach Wickre with eleven of thirteen lettermen returning. Four fine freshmen lettered this year: Jerry Rempfer, Ken Fiechtner, Clint Lonbaken, and All-NDCAC guard. Garland Herndon. Three other starters besides Herndon are returning: Forward: Bill Johnson, and Guards.- Jay AAcNamer and Russ Podoll. With this returning for the '68- 69 season, Dustie Basketball should be on the rise. 1967-68 RECORD UND-EB OPPONENT 86 Lake Region 71 74 Huron 86 69 General Beadle 82 70 Bemidji State 73 95 Lake Region 57 71 May ville 112 67 Wahpeton 76 100 Bottineau 80 69 Wahpeton 68 89 Bismarck 99 78 Valley City 92 87 Minot 91 72 Dickinson 95 69 Jamestown 79 87 Bismarck 103 67 Mayville 64 56 Jamestown 89 71 Valley City 81 71 Dickinson 104 66 South Dakota Tech. 67 66 Minot 71 Johnson puls in two against Bern id ji State.
