J. C. McMillan became President of the State Normal and Industrial College in 1936 and immediately launched a program of extending the college's services to all residents of the southeastern part of North Dakota. After 18 years he can look with pride on his work, knowing that he has done the best job in the state of making his school serve the pur- pose for which it was founded. In appreciation of his years of untiring efforts for the college and his loyalty to his faculty and his students, we gratefully dedicate this book to our President. BACK ROW: F. P. Whitney. L. O. From a list of nominees selected by the juniors and seniors themselves, a student-faculty committee makes the final choice, based on leader - ship qualities as displayed in activities both on and off the campus, personality, character, and service to the school. En Aye Leader ship Awards for 1952 went to Floyd E. Mattheis, Ellendale; Edna Stahlecker Irion, Ellen- dale; Charles S. Anderson, Ellendale; and Virginia M. Schultz, Montevideo, Minn. En Aye Leadership Awards for 1953 went to Nadine A. Fox, Forbes; Herbert K. Bertsch, Ashley; Fred W. Retzlaff, Ellendale; and Victor R. Steinwand, El- lendale. Charles Anderson Fred Retzlaff Herbert Bertsch Nadine Fox Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities Each fall the college is authorized a certain number of nominees eligible for Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities, the number depending on the previous year's enrollment. At the N-I the Fac- ulty Council nominates, from the list of juniors and seniors, twice as many candidates as the college is authorized; the Student Council then makes the final selection from that faculty list. Five seniors were nominated in 1952 and accepted by Who's Who headquarters in Tuscaloosa, Ala. They were Victor R. Steinwand, Ellendale; Fred W. Retz- laff, Ellendale; Herbert K. Bertsch, Ashley; Nadine A. Fox, Forbes; and Marilyn J. Meyer, Edgeley. In the fall of 1953 the N-I was authorized but one member, and the Faculty and Student Councils agreed unanimously to select Howard Freeberg, Lisbon. Howard Freeberg Alden Flakoll of Forbes and Elaine Bentson of Cogswell (above) ruled as King and Queen of Senior Day in 1952. Duane Gemar and Caro- lina Rudolph of Fuller- ton (below) reigned over the 1953 Senior Day. One hundred fifty high school seniors from 12 schools visited the college at the N-I's second annual Senior Day in 1952, and 160 guests from 11 schools attended the 1953 event. The program both years included assembly entertainments, tours of the campus, banquets, and dances. Stu- dent chairmen of the event were Herbert Bertsch in 1952 and Wilfred Richter in 1953. Four Daughters was the highlight of the N'-I Players'season in 1953, featuring the four girls above: Grace Bell. Arlene Retzlaff, Beverly Gerdon. and Diane Day. The play was directed by Mrs. Clara T. Ingvalson. club adviser. The summer school formal, climaxing social activities of the 1953 summer session, brought out the decorative genius of students in Mrs. Randolph's art classes, headed by Boyd Blumer (upper left). Queen Arlene Retzlaff and Attendants Romona Haupt and Nadine Fox. Whisker Kin Carroll Swenson. 1952 Roundup Arlene Retzlaff reigned as Queen of the 1952 Roundup. Winning awards at the Pepfest were Carroll Swenson, Whisker King; Alfred Train- man.Beardless Baron; KendelCofell. Roger Ken- dall. Darlene Anderson, and Grace Bell, best- dressed cowboys and cowgirls. Range Boss Donald Devitt. Featuring the parade Saturday were high school bands from Ellendale, Gwinner.and Bristol, S. D. Besides numerous horsemen, buggies, and the American Legion color guard, 20 floats took part. Bristol won the trophy for the best marching band. Winning float was the Legion Auxiliary entry featuring Boys' and Giris'State delegates . Se- cond prize went to the Indus- trial Arts club's flying saucer. Cliff Kyes' orchestra played for the Victory Dance Saturday night, after the Dusties had de- feated the Wahpeton Wildcats on the gridiron that afternoon. 1953 Roundup Alumni roar in with a jet plane. Forty floats, six visiting high school bands, the American Legion color guard, and 20 horsemen helped make the 1953 parade the longest and most spectacular in the history of the college. Winning first prize for the second successive year as the best marching band was the Bristol high school entry, di- rected by N-l Alumnus Neil Smith. Winning prizes for floats were the FTA, Legion Auxiliary, and Letter- men's Club (below). Allegra Rath was intro- duced at the dance as Queen of the 1953 Round- up, with Peggy Hatfield and Patricia Hauser serv- ing as her attendants. Blue Gordon's orchestra held forth on the stage. Range Boss Boyd Blumer Adding materially to the color of the parade were high school bands from Ellendale and Gwinner (below), Oakes, Edgeley, and Cogswell. Pepfest winners were Edwin Schlenker, Whisker King; Douglas Bell, Beardless Baron; Edgar Bollinger, Darwin Zimmerman, Lil- lian Cofell, and Caroline VanderWal, best-dressed cowboys and cowgirls. Sixth-graders put on a puppet show (above) Patricia Hauser and Adeline Lacina (left) learn the technique in the elementary edu- cation department. One of the weekly assemblies was staged by the art depart- ment, with samples of various kinds of work done by students in class. Industrial education is for girls as well as boys. Glenniss Hughes and Theresa Loeger- ing (left) examine parts used in auto mechanics class. Norma Quast (below) works on a dress under the watchful eye of Ruth Fritch. One of the significant contributions the college has made to farmers of the two Dakotas is the development of the model farm shop. The farm shop of Pat Sand (below) was a product of the farm mechanics course. Last year's big community pro- ject in the industrial arts depart- ment was the construction of a wooden lung for the Dickey County Memorial hospital. The Eliendale Kiwanis club paid for the material and the construction work was do- nated by industrial arts students and several Kiwanis members, under the supervision of E. L. Kurth. . . The N-I defeated Bottineau, Bismarck, Wahpeton, and Dickinson, losing only to Jamestown. A 20-20 tie at Mayvillc put them just out of reach of the 5-1 records posted by two other loop teams. In 1953, with but three veterans in the lineup. Coach Trei put together a freshman team that thumped Bottineau in the opener but dropped their remaining games.
