In 1861 the Pacific Railroad, forerunner of the Missouri-Pacific, rolled into Sedalia, providing a direct East-West route for cattle shipping and passenger service.

Birthplace of Ragtime Sedalia became the birthplace of ragtime in the 1890 ' s. Scott Jopiin, later known as the King of Ragtime, was a Sedalian who composed what is termed the greatest rag ever, the Maple Leaf Rag. He wrote the music at the Maple Leaf Club which was located at 119 West Main. A stone monument and a maple tree now mark the club ' s spot. Ragtime eventually spread in every direction, going from St. Louis to New Orleans. SFCC captures the spirit of ragtime not only in its emblem, but also in the Maple Leaf Room in the Learning Resources Center. The room has a collection of items of ragtime composers of the late 1800 ' s. Included are a copy of a Stark-Joplin contract, stained glass window of the Woods Opera House (pictured above) and much of the original ragtime sheet music. The murals pictured on both these pages are on display at the Sedalia Municipal Building and were painted by Prof. Eric Bransby of Kansas City.
