Growth has been characteristic of State Fair Community College since the first groundbreaking ceremony on our campus on June 6, 1968. Over the past 10 years, this growth has been evident not only in the number of buildings constructed, but also in the steady increase in student enrollment and course offerings. SFCC is bound to experience continued expansion and improvement during this second decade. This growth seems to come because, as President Fred E. Davis recently said, We dream a lot around here. Our college ' s future is determined by what we did in the past and by what we dream and do in the present. Therefore the Exhibitor would like to take you on a tour of our community ' s past and present through an eight-page photo-essay in color. The pages are 1, 4, 5, 8, 9, 12, 13 and 16. We express our appreciation to local industries that permitted us to photograph their sites. We also thank the City of Sedalia for letting us photograph the historic murals in the Municipal Building. The color photographs on the eight pages depict the various symbols on SFCC seal. The roots of our seal are steeped in local history and culture. The award ribbon in the upper left of the seal symbolizes Missouri State Fair. In 1899 Missouri Legislature named Sedalia as the permanent site of the State Fair. Since then, Missouri ' s annual exposition has continued to be a vital part of the local economy. The longhorn head and railroad track are symbolic of the cattle drives and railhead at Sedalia. The banjo and keyboard represent classical ragtime jazz which originated in Sedalia. The torch and the wheel of industry represent the academic and vocational-technical efforts of the college. The wavy line across the shield symbolizes water and the Kaysinger Dam. The Greek columns represent SFCC as an institution of higher education. Thus, our college seal tells a significant story — a story of our community ' s assets, efforts and aspirations. This yearbook tells a similar story, too. We hope you will find this tenth volume of the Exhibitor as interesting to read as it was for us to produce. — Exhibitor Staff THIS ISSUE Dedicated to Roy Simpson We proudly dedicate this tenth volume of the Exhibitor to Mr. Roy W. Simpson, Director of our Learning Resources Center and Co-ordinator of Media Services. Mr. Simpson came to SFCC in 1970 as an audio-visual specialist. Under his capable and resourceful leadership, the Audio-Vi jal Department kept expanding to meet the needs of our grow ing college. In 1973 he was promoted to his present position in which he oversees the services and facilities in the Learning SAY I ' LL TRY Resources Center — the Library, television studio, photo lab, the Media Forum, slide, tape and art production services, and the Reprographics Center which includes a print shop and graphic arts services. Mr. Simpson has a B.A. degree in art from Bethany Nazarene College in Bethany, Oklahoma, and a Master ' s degree in audio-visual education from Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg. His professional background includes two years in NOT I CAN ' T military service as an instructor training specialist, seven years in the graphics arts division of Hallmark Cards, Inc., and three years as a graphic arts and printing teacher in the Kansas City public school system. SFCC President Fred Davis considers Mr. Simpson to be tops in his field . . . one of the best audio-visual men in the country. Mr. Simpson ' s expertise in photography and audio-visual techniques were amply evident in the excellent slide-tape p ' -3sentations on the histories of Benton and Pettis counties he helped produce for the Missouri Committee for the Humanities and the two county historical societies. The competence of Mr. Simpson and his staff was recognized by his peers statewide when SFCC won the MAECT (Missouri Association of Educational and Commun- ications Technology) plaque in 1978 for outstanding merit in the field of media services. Mr. Simpson ' s administrative abilities received community-wide recognition in 1975 when the Sedalia chapter of the American Business Women ' s Association honored him with the Boss of the Year award. Mr. Simpson is vice-president of the Sedalia camp of Gideons International. He is Sunday School superintendent, a teacher and an elder at the Sedalia Church of the Nazarene where he is respected as a very dependable, honest, and dedicated member, accordng to the Rev. Bill Lakey, pastor. Roy is a real family man, the Rev. Lakey added. He takes his responsibility in the home to heart. Mr. Simpson and his wife, Lenore, have four children — Kendall, a sophomore at SFCC; Carol, Linda and Clenda. The attractive signs that adorn his office — Praise the Lord, Anyway and Say ' I ' ll Try ' , Not ' I Can ' t ' — seem to aptly sum up Mr. Simpson ' s philosophy of life. His devotion to the Christian faith as well as his family, and his dedication to his work and professional excellence have won him admirers both at SFCC and in the community. Toward a Bright Future SFCC received state-wide recognition when William C. Hopkins, chairman of our board of trustees, was elected president of the Missouri Associat ' on of Community and Junior Colleges for 1977-78. Bw. RIGHT CENTER: Frank Pennell Jr., instructor in business and office, and Dana Close, secretary, work on a state-funded Sex Equity project designed to attract males into office and secretarial jobs. The Greek columns, the torch and the wheel of industry in the SFCC emblem aptly summarize the multi-faceted role of our college. SFCC not only trains area residents in technical skills such as welding or typing, but also offers courses in the Division of Arts and Science for those who plan to transfer to a four-year college. The evening courses, under the Community Services Division, help hundreds of day-workers to earn college credit or learn a hobby such as wood carving or knitting. Brice Gregory and Paula Cribble proudly display one of the many inter-collegiate rodeo trophies SFCC won during the year. Another Building In SFCC ' s Future The Student Union, 1972. A building fund campaign is under way, and potential donor and members of the community — are invited to contact SFCC ' s Office of Resource Development in the Interim Building. alumni In 1861 the Pacific Railroad, forerunner of the Missouri-Pacific, rolled into Sedalia, providing a direct East-West route for cattle shipping and passenger service. Birthplace of Ragtime Sedalia became the birthplace of ragtime in the 1890 ' s. Scott Jopiin, later known as the King of Ragtime, was a Sedalian who composed what is termed the greatest rag ever, the Maple Leaf Rag. He wrote the music at the Maple Leaf Club which was located at 119 West Main. A stone monument and a maple tree now mark the club ' s spot. Ragtime eventually spread in every direction, going from St. Louis to New Orleans. SFCC captures the spirit of ragtime not only in its emblem, but also in the Maple Leaf Room in the Learning Resources Center. The room has a collection of items of ragtime composers of the late 1800 ' s. Included are a copy of a Stark-Joplin contract, stained glass window of the Woods Opera House (pictured above) and much of the original ragtime sheet music. The murals pictured on both these pages are on display at the Sedalia Municipal Building and were painted by Prof. Eric Bransby of Kansas City. THURM LOWERY, Coach Rodeo Team Excels In National Events In their first year of competition in the 1977-78 season, the SFCC rodeo team became known as something of a Cinderella team when they finished second in the Ozark Region. They qualified to participate in the national intercol- legiate finals at Bozeman, Montana, where they placed 12th in the nation. If this didn ' t serve notice on the 270 colleges and universities in the other nine regions of the United States who field (Continue on Page 173) DAN BAILEY, Team Captain I The team that went to the nationals at Bozeman, Mont., included Bob Maxwell, publicity director; Mike Martin, Dan Bailey, Kenny Davis, Kenny Heman, Brice Gregory, Jim Francka, Terry McCulthcon, and Thurm Lowery, coach. Rodeo (Continued from Page 166) rodeo teams that a new star was peeking over the horizon, the 1978-79 season should have. The Roadrunners came on strong this year with the men ' s team winning every intercol- legiate rodeo in which they have participated. Cinderella team or not, they are currently leading the nation in total team points scored per rodeo, and have the top three individuals in the United States in the men ' s all-around standings. Joe Peabody, at the time the Exhibitor went to press, had a total of 602.5 points to lead all the other cowboys. Dug Dugan was second with 525 points, and Terry McCutcheon was third with 455 total points. After four rodeos, SFCC had a total of 2,320 points, the highest team score in the region. Arkansas State University was second with 1,345 points, and the University of Tennessee, last year ' s regional winner, was in third place with 775 points. Our team has grown from nine members last year (eight boys and one girl), to a total of 24 members. Several individuals are also leading in event competition. Dan Bailey has 200 points to lead the bareback riding, while Joe Peabody is second with 190, and Dug Dugan stands third with 125. Dug Dugan is leading the saddlebronc riding with 440 points, with Peabody second with 250. Terry McCutcheon is first in the steer wrestling event with 220 points and Kenny Heman is fourth with 150 points. Terry McCutcheon and Kenny Heman are third and fourth in the team roping competition with 130 and 115 points, respectively. Under the rules of the National intercol- legiate Rodeo Association, there is no classifica- tion of institutions according to size. A smaller two-year or four-year college competes on an equal basis with the larger colleges and universities. — Thurm Lowery They Keep SFCC In Ship Shape Davui s Hubert Crow Kenneth Campbell (above), maintenance engineer, and Dennis Raabe (below), head custodian.
