t gf' ' .LQ.b Qpporiunifies Increasing- I' L . , '.W By SamJones Job opportunities for secretaries and stenographers are increasing and the demand for properly trained personnel is exceeding the supply. Wigh this in mind, the secretarial and clerical practice classes are being transformed into functioning business offices by use of office simulation. The Business and Office Advisory Committee has reported, Failure of office personnel is largely due to poor attitudes rather than a lack of skill. By simulation, realistic office procedures, policies and atmosphere become a part of the student. Activities in SFCC's office simulation program are directed toward improving dependability, promptness, pride and other attitudes needed to maintain good human relations on the job. Students make application for a job, are interviewed, hired and paid for a specific job by the instructor who is known as the Office Manager. Promotions are made to three job levels and are based on performance evaluations made on each employee every four weeks. The office simulation program is completely individualized in that a student can be hired into a job for Demand Exceeding Supply for if Secretaries ond Stenogruphers Mrs. Bobbie Hawkins, a freshman in SFCC's two year Associate OI Arts Degree secretarial science program, is reviewing a slide tape presentation prepared by the college's audio visual department. These presentations have made individualized instruction possible in typing. which she qualifies at any time during the semester and can receive promotions and exit from the program when her skills and attitudes meet the objectives of the training. A The built-in necessity of student interaction in the normal give and take of office life requires cooperation and interdependence. Critical incidents, staff meetings, in- service workshops and evaluation sessions provide opportunities for the Office Manager to emphasize desirable attitudes. Critical incidents are specifically staged by the Office Manager to develop decision-making skills on the part of the student. SFCC First To Use New Program The secretarial and clerical practice classes at SFCC have attracted much favorable attention throughout the region and State Fair is the first school in Missouri to use the new business-simulation program developed by the 3-M Company of St. Paul, Minnesota. The organization which is simulated is the American Paper Exporters Association QAPEXJ, a service organication of the American paper industry. The simulated office course is taken during a student's last semester in her program and provides a culminating experience in shorthand, typing, business machines, communications, bookkeeping and other skills in a realistic job setting, Mrs. Shirley Evans, Business and Office Division Chairman, explained. There are two programs offered in the secretarial science division. A one-year course of study includes business skills training while the two-year program is more comprehensive because it includes general education classes and the student achieves a higher skill level. The graduate receiving her associate degree is qualified to take a position as a personl, legal, or executive secretary. While most students go directly to work after finishing their training, a few go on to four-year institutions. Last year 100 per cent of the graduates desiring employment were placed in either clerical or ' secretarial positions, Mrs. Evans emphasized. The sound-page is one of the new audio-visual aids that the college has acquired this year. It works on the principle of magnetic recording tape and consists of a standard size page on which instruction is typed. It can then be played back for the student's individualized instruction. The sound-page is currently being used in advanced shorthand classes and for specialized instructional units in office practice. Open-Channel Scheduling - A New Innovation Another new innovation is the experiment with open-channel scheduling. The instructional staff of the Business and Office Divison believe that every student can learn. In order to provide an atmosphere in which they can' be successful, instruction has been individualized. This means that the student progress through the courses at his or her own pace, and instructors talk with him and help him on a one-to-one basis. Just recently the Typing IV and Shorthand IV courses have been completely individualized. Students 1 in these classes can branch out in specialized areas. These specialized areas include medical. legal. technical and educational secretarial training. Typing and Shorthand classes are offered year- round in evening classes and in centers in surrounding communities.
