These were the words Coach Bill Barton used to describe State Fair's chances against the highly regarded Gulf Coast Community College. The team from Florida, which was ranked number two nationally, had worked its way into the position of playing the Ftoadrunners for the Crowder Classic Tournament championship. The Barton charges all gave one hundred percent and walked away with the trophy. The Crowder Classic was indicative of the way the Big Blue Machine operated this year. Starting slowly, they showed signs of greatnessg however, the new players needed time to put it together. Also, playing opponents second to none, gave these new players a great deal of experience. Vincennes, Hutchinson, and Gulf Coast are examples of the calibre of play the Ftoadrunners faced in 1972-73. The final tabulation of games showed 21 wins and 14 losses, which is respectable in anybodys book. Not only the record good it indicated the dedication and ability was , of the young coach, who many times was forced to start four freshmen, and who went on to win the last 17 out of 23 games. 167
