Wigh this in mind, the secretarial and clerical practice classes are being transformed into functioning business offices by use of office simulation. The Business and Office Advisory Committee has reported, Failure of office personnel is largely due to poor attitudes rather than a lack of skill. By simulation, realistic office procedures, policies and atmosphere become a part of the student. Activities in SFCC's office simulation program are directed toward improving dependability, promptness, pride and other attitudes needed to maintain good human relations on the job. Students make application for a job, are interviewed, hired and paid for a specific job by the instructor who is known as the Office Manager. Promotions are made to three job levels and are based on performance evaluations made on each employee every four weeks. The office simulation program is completely individualized in that a student can be hired into a job for Demand Exceeding Supply for if Secretaries ond Stenogruphers Mrs. Bobbie Hawkins, a freshman in SFCC's two year Associate OI Arts Degree secretarial science program, is reviewing a slide tape presentation prepared by the college's audio visual department. These presentations have made individualized instruction possible in typing. which she qualifies at any time during the semester and can receive promotions and exit from the program when her skills and attitudes meet the objectives of the training. A The built-in necessity of student interaction in the normal give and take of office life requires cooperation and interdependence. Critical incidents, staff meetings, in- service workshops and evaluation sessions provide opportunities for the Office Manager to emphasize desirable attitudes. Critical incidents are specifically staged by the Office Manager to develop decision-making skills on the part of the student. SFCC First To Use New Program The secretarial and clerical practice classes at SFCC have attracted much favorable attention throughout the region and State Fair is the first school in Missouri to use the new business-simulation program developed by the 3-M Company of St. Paul, Minnesota. The organization which is simulated is the American Paper Exporters Association QAPEXJ, a service organication of the American paper industry. The simulated office course is taken during a student's last semester in her program and provides a culminating experience in shorthand, typing, business machines, communications, bookkeeping and other skills in a realistic job setting, Mrs. Shirley Evans, Business and Office Division Chairman, explained. There are two programs offered in the secretarial science division. A one-year course of study includes business skills training while the two-year program is more comprehensive because it includes general education classes and the student achieves a higher skill level. The graduate receiving her associate degree is qualified to take a position as a personl, legal, or executive secretary. While most students go directly to work after finishing their training, a few go on to four-year institutions. Last year 100 per cent of the graduates desiring employment were placed in either clerical or ' secretarial positions, Mrs. Evans emphasized. The sound-page is one of the new audio-visual aids that the college has acquired this year. It works on the principle of magnetic recording tape and consists of a standard size page on which instruction is typed. It can then be played back for the student's individualized instruction. The sound-page is currently being used in advanced shorthand classes and for specialized instructional units in office practice. Open-Channel Scheduling - A New Innovation Another new innovation is the experiment with open-channel scheduling. The instructional staff of the Business and Office Divison believe that every student can learn. In order to provide an atmosphere in which they can' be successful, instruction has been individualized. This means that the student progress through the courses at his or her own pace, and instructors talk with him and help him on a one-to-one basis. Just recently the Typing IV and Shorthand IV courses have been completely individualized. Students 1 in these classes can branch out in specialized areas. These specialized areas include medical. legal. technical and educational secretarial training. W . In Secretarial Science What Individualized Instruction Means To The Student TO HELEN BRESHEARS Individualized Instruction means open entry - enrolling in a course when you are ready for it, not necessarily at the beginning of the semester. Helen enrolled in Typing II on October 18th because she completed the course requirements for Typing I in early October. She didn'tihave to wait until the Spring semester began in Januarv. TO MARY KAY CAUTHON Individualized Instruction means meeting special needs. Mary Kay had developed the habit of peeking at her keys while typing. While completing Typing I She concentrated on correcting this problem and worked on special drills. Now Mary Kay's eyes are almost riveted to her text or copy. In a traditional classroom the instructor must concentrate on the needs of the majority of students which are usually increased speed and accuracy. TO JUDY GERKEN Individualized Instmction means open end - getting your grade and college credit when you complete the course content and achieve the course dbjectivesg completion is not required by the last day of the semester. Judy and her husband are the proud new parents of a lovely baby girl. When the adoption agency notified Judy that their long awaited baby was ready to go home, she had to withdraw from the traditional classes to stay home with her baby. Judy was in the last semester of her two-year secretarial program. She has been able to continue the individualized Shorthand IV and Typing IV classes though. One day a week Grandmother has the privilege of - taking care of Jennifer and Judy spends that rday in the Shorthand Lab and Typing Lab working toward completion of these courses. Judy hopes to complete her degree by taking the other needed classes at night. ' 'S-'K My .. ir.-F' sits.. 4 -s. ... zg, ,,.. 1 . ROA DR UNNER ROOTERS This year the Roadrunner Rooters have been a very active club. At 'the beginning of the first semester they sold memberships to the Coyote Pack in support of the basketball team. Then, during Soccer season, they ran the concession stand by the Soccer field. Other money making projects were bake and fruit sales. 'Leftovers' were donated to Rest Haven Nursing Home. At the very beginning of the year, the club served the ban- quet held in the student union during the MAJC-SGA Convention being held at SFCC. One major project the club undertook was selling booster buttons in support of the school and basketball team. The inscription on the buttons was The Big Blue Machine is on the Move. The Rooters were in charge of serving refreshments for the Homecoming dance and decorating for the dance. During the Homecoming game, they gave long stem roses to the parents of the basketball players on Parents Night. The Rooters sponsored Larry Emory and Vaughn Hart Night and they gave individual plaques to both, expressing gratitude for their support of the Roadrunners. The Rooters are responsible for the signs in the Bird Cage during home games and for the run-through that the basketball team used before each home game. In addition to all this, the Rooters are responsible for helping with the decorations for the All-Sports Banquet. Westminster SMSU Wentworth William Jewell State Fair 72-73 SFCC Soccer State Fair State Fair State Fair State Fair Kansas Tech State Fair Forest Park Meremac William Jewell 1 Central Methodist 4 Wentworth State Fair State Fair State Fair State Fair Although i becoming fluctuation of the bigg exception With only Roadrunne offenseg hi work and T team will t bright spo desire to Roadrunne soccer prc if W1Il1iia..., nb m Y 2 0 0 1 1 The intensity of soccer is illustrated as two players collide. SFCC Soccer Coach Greg Bell discusses the rules with Mr Archie Shireman, referee, as Bob Phillips, an SFCC player looks on. Although it is a young sport in America, soccer is fast becoming one of the most popular sports at SFCC. The fluctuation of players, as at most two-year schools, is one of the biggest hurdles for a coach to clear, State Fair is no exception to this problem. With only two returning lettermen this year, the Floadrunners had a great deal of difficulty polishing their offenseg however, the record was not indicative of the work and effort exerted by the team. Most of this year's team will be returning, so next season should provide a bright spot in SFCC's brief history. These were the words Coach Bill Barton used to describe State Fair's chances against the highly regarded Gulf Coast Community College. The team from Florida, which was ranked number two nationally, had worked its way into the position of playing the Ftoadrunners for the Crowder Classic Tournament championship. The Barton charges all gave one hundred percent and walked away with the trophy. The Crowder Classic was indicative of the way the Big Blue Machine operated this year. Starting slowly, they showed signs of greatnessg however, the new players needed time to put it together. Also, playing opponents second to none, gave these new players a great deal of experience. Vincennes, Hutchinson, and Gulf Coast are examples of the calibre of play the Ftoadrunners faced in 1972-73. The final tabulation of games showed 21 wins and 14 losses, which is respectable in anybodys book. Not only the record good it indicated the dedication and ability was , of the young coach, who many times was forced to start four freshmen, and who went on to win the last 17 out of 23 games. 167 Q... f f , Z . fi , , 447 .,-Lflf. , f'1'f 7, . 7.3, f W 1 -fy . The union, located to the west of the classroom facilities, contains the bookstore, publications room, a storage room, and a new food service facilities. The pool tables have been repaired and a foosball game added to entertain students between classes. The old union was converted into secretarial science classrooms and the old secretarial science classrooms became expanded faculty offices. Construction was begun in August and the work was finished about a month after classes had started. Students were without a union for a while, but it was well worth the wait as the opening date arrived. , mg , . we . Pool tables and a juke box also add to the student recreational facilities. The south end of the union is the SFCC bookstore which has been expanded and greatly improved. The bookstore is more open and not as confining as the quarters we had in the other union. stated Mrs. Anna Marie Lower, and we also have more items than before. The new facility is to be efficently run in a department store-like mannerg it offers students not only school supplies but also a selection of stereo tapes, candles, gifts, and T- shirts. Mrs. Anna Marie Lower, Mrs. Joyce Matthews, Pat Flower and Jan Biggs have worked long hours to ready the bookstore for student use and have accomplished their goal of an attractive, useful operation. Another new feature the union offers is a food service. The mini- cafeteria catered by Mr. Gene Landon of State Fair Restaurant provides students with a variety of sandwiches, soup, deserts, drinks and snacks. This much needed service has become a popular aspect of the new union, and the students and faculty appreciate the convinence of their own cafeteria. Form A Union Committee Something new for State Fair concerning the student union is the formation of a Union Committee. President Fred Davis announced its origin at the dedication ceremonies. The Committee, whose purpose will be to decide on rules and policies for the facilities, will be comprised of Mr. Gene Landon, Mr. Bob Woolery, Dean of Community Services, Marvin Buford, and several other SFCC students. Woolery remarked, our primary job will be to establish guidelines as to how the union will be used. It is hoped that this will make the union more efficient and organized than ever before. The dedication ceremony for the union which was held at 9:30 a.m. was the end of much planning and aarork for many people. Mr. William opkins, Chairman of the college's 'Ni t Continued from Page Onem Board of Trustees, told the assembled group that State Fair's students today are making history and that this was a big step forward for our campus. He further stated, We the Board of Trustees dedicate this union to you, the Students of State Fair Community College. A few additional comments were made concerning the Elizabeth B. Yeater bequest which is expected to approximate S2 million. The new union along with being an attractive recreational facility will also provide a place for convocations, lecturers and organizational functions. It is a welcome addition to the school and will provide the SFCC student body with many extra benefits. PREPARING FOR THE OPENING - Mr. Bill Raboum, second from left, business manager of SFCC, makes the last minute preparations for the nbbon cutting ceremony symbolizing the opening of the new Student Union which took place Friday SCPTCHIDCI 29.Assisting Mr. Rahourn are custodians Wayne Shoemaker, left, and Roy Winfrey.
