Dr. Ioyce Fielding, Director of Admissions and Student Personnel, Robert Maxwell, Voca- tional-Technical Counselor, lack Fowler, Vo- cational Technical Advisor, Ioe Petteway, Fi- nancial Aids Director and Academic Advisor, and Ierry Greer, Academic Counselor, are five towers of strength when students need questions answered and help in planning schedules, choos- ing a particular field of study, deciding on a vo- cation or acquiring financial aid. These unselfish individuals devote hours to the' work which forms an important part of our futures and our careers. Through them we learn what colleges will offer the best instruction for us in our chosen fields. Their acute interest in each individuals welfare gives us the inspiration to further ourselves when trying times are upon us. No problem is too great or too small for their attention. l The warm personalities of each counselor and their constant striving to make us better stu- dents and individuals create a guiding light in times of darkness. Our friends. . .our counselors-what would we do without them? an integral part of our system 3 Z N.....-........-.,,..-1-57,0-uf1qy..,.Av1p. One of the men who has made this achievement possible is Dr. Stephen Poort. Since the first days of this institution Dr. Poort has been ready to act-with ideas, plans, and wholehearted faith in the abilities of every- one connected with SFCC. With sincere regard to the problems of each individual, Dr. Poort has helped to establish a tradition at SFCC-a tradition of respect and rap- port between members of the staff and the stu- dent body. It is with the deepest regret that we see Dr. Poort leave our college, but his efforts and successes will not have been in vain. We shall long remember his words of guidance and the goals he strove to achieve. Frangoise La- vole enabled us to recall many pleasant moments ,ot her presence. Traveling to the Etats-Unis as they are known in her native language, she got to live in this area as did her brother, lean-Louis, as an AFS exchange student in l969. Frangoise was well versed in the English language, having studied it for several years. While here she attended sports events and dances with enthusiasm. Having an op- portunity to spend the spring se- mester in Kansas City, we were happy for her but sorry to see her leave. The memory of her pleasant glow will burn for a long time. Taken one September morning Fran oise was caught by the Exhlbzfor photographer chatting with some students in the union The small paperback in her hand is an Eng- lish-Yrench dictionary she soon learned how to do without. 131 will 'T' l vi sl DIL A , U, ,,-W if-' i , , X ,. At one point SFCC was 3-7, and nobody was dreaming of Hutchin- son, Kansas at that time. Perhaps the turning point of the season came on the weekend of Ianuary 15. The Roadrunners had previously lost a tough weekend set to Three Rivers and to Iefferson College. This time we bounced back with a convincing 88-68 win over Three Rivers and avenged a one-point loss to the Vikings with a one-point triumph. With the Penn Val- ley win, it appeared that we could handle anyone. But Moberly and Crowder stood in the playoff road. After the heartbreaker with the Greyhounds lost at the buzzer, the incentive had been supplied. The Boadrunners took their No. 4 seeding, and handed Crowder and Moberly their tickets for their return trip home much to the delight of the crowd at the Ag Building. SFCC then swept Meramec in two straight and looked to the national tourney. An excellent turn- out greeted the team at the Hutchinson Sports Arena along with some rugged competition. Casper and Dal- ton flaunted a combined record of 60-5. Although the season came to a sudden halt, much has been gained. The experience of competition with these powerful opponents was, and will be, an asset in the years to come. As many of us left Hutchinson our only thought was, We'1l be back soon. 1971- 72 Season Record Opponent We They Whiteman AFB 109 80 Iohnson County Kansas 88 83 Missouri Western 84. 85 Peru State 100 79 Southwest Baptist IV 89 60 Meramec Community College 62 79 Mineral Area 79 92 Moberly 62 78 Iowa Western 85 95 Three Rivers 69 80 Iefferson College 67 68 Highland Kansas 71 68 Trenton 80 69 Penn Valley 83 97 Hannibal 78 70 Longview 117 99 Three Rivers 88 58 Iefferson College 64 63 Southwest Baptist IV 74 55 Crowder 83 88 Iohnson County Kansas 85 83 Fort Scott 69 89 Allen County 78 57 Longview 116 75 Crowder 74 76 East Central 85 58 Penn Valley 84 61 Trenton 69 67 Iowa Western 88 94 Moberly 71 73 East Central 100 80 Trenton' 84 72 Crowder' 73 53 Moberly' 66 53 Meramech' 70 69 Meramec 83 69 Casper, Wyort- 65 79 Dalton, Ga.-lf 83 90 'regional 16 west division playoffs ' 'regional 16 playoffs -1-national tournament 9 -:-na'.'ma...:.:x ....H-....,m--..1-T1-..-,Q-.i- 7.7 W., Y , ,Y ,, , . . tiorz Qt lard all draws a crowd and Myles YateS . Without question the most explosive offensive threat to don a Roadrunner uniform, his lightning fast reflexes al- lowed him many steals and consequent lay-ups such as this one in a 78-70 Homecoming win over Hannibal. By mid-season lim had already broken the career scoring mark held by Iohn Nelson. A 6' 3 freshman from Freedom, Pennsylvania, he reminds one of the New York Knicks' Earl the Pearl Monroe with his elusive ball handling, passing, and dribbling. Playing forward much of the time, lim found himself outsized by many foes, but blessed with fine spring in his legs, he held his own and more. Another great asset is his knack for drawing fouls. On dozens of instances when he went underneath, he came out with free throws and often a three-point play. i N '- 'W x.N A. ,'.1:.'-:'. in5'i' , '. - ' 'Hr' f fv 4 : '-'-f -Q-.f ,avg ' Pr x .,--- R ,,.:- fa:-V 5-L. f,Y,.f:J.',..-:fa '-Q: .651 , ' ' 1 s- -- .iwzzip ,af -- - K 1-.' . . f .-4. , - 'GM ' ', Z' '4 f:ff'-'LGU' 713: 'I' g m'7-- pf-'fi 1 bf'-,' ,' ' : 'W gE5f'f2-L55s:5iQEv,3aE?fQ - --4afixg4QsTy:4:zy:-'-5Q5'5'?i??f fi -'v f 'f? efT-IZEQQQQI--' gf. - WV-f5?545ffjf?15ff4'?gf165111-EQijf-Q! After a lengthy period of in-depth plan- ning, club members finally began building an exceptionally good atmosphere on the morning of December l6. By mid-after- noon the union and the main hall were jammed with bales of straw-hay. When the students came to the dance they found a slide blocking the entrance to the door. As if that wasn't enough a tunnel of bales was arranged, and those attending were urged to crawl through it for initiation purposes. The mood was continued in the union with bales everywhere. In country dress a very fine number of farmers attended. Although rock music prevailed, the hoedown was most often requested. Refreshments were served, adding another touch that made this year's Barnyard Dance a happy occasion. DECA officers Don Simon and Gail Crnic Cabovel crown queen Caroline.
