MAROON AND GRAY Senior Class History Many years ago a group of students-to-be straggled into the first grade, and at the end of the year straggled out again. This collection of growing humanity continued the same procedure during the following years-and here we are! Until our freshman year we took our education rather lightly. We had had skirmishes with math and social studies, but the prologue to our high school life began when we entered the ninth grade. Our boys helped make the junior high football and basketball teams the success they were. The curtain was raised for Act One when we began our sophomore year. Many of us were intrigued by sports. Football, basketball, and wrestling, in its first year as a school sport, claimed their devotees. Many sophomores participated in the operetta and debating. ' Act Two began as we became the junior class, and Act Two was composed of many scenes. ln football and soccer we were well represented. In basketball we had more than our share of participants. Iuniors composed more than half of the wrestling team. We also had our members on the tennis, track and golf squads. We had our share of juniors in debating. VVe helped to run the PIPER into a deficit, and we staged the junior declamatory contest. The plays and the Prom netted social and Hnancial profits. Curtain on Act Two. The script for the events leading up to the climax in Act Three will be found elsewhere in this book. But the play isn't finished yet, the final curtain on the Class of 739 will be rung down some time in the distant future. Twenty Twenty-one MAROON AND GRAY Charlie Ridcnour, State High's 115-pound wrestler. Dis- trict Six and Nine Champion, 19393 Pennsylvania Interscho' Iastic Champion 1939. MAROON AND GRAY Last Will and Testament of the Class of 1939 We hereby bequeath the following: Bill Clark offers to teach Bob Shigley how to amuse for abusej the teachers. Becky Auman donates to Phyllis Watkins her policy of being seen but not heard. We don't want to wish Phil White's puns on anyone. Don and Gloria leave Mr. Green's cloakroom empty. To Wacky Warner is left Bob Breon's ability to talk his way out of any jam. Cussy MacMullin bequeaths to Bill Reed the comforts of unpressed trousers and uncombed hair. We'd like to leave Charlie to Meyer, but his mother wants him to graduate. Paulie Keller and Marian Crow leave their chewing gum to Ieanne'Don- aldson. Stanley Cobb's rosy cheeks are donated to all anemic Iuniors. Bill Shoemaker leaves his growing pains to Christine Shutt. Butch's big brown eyes ought to be left to Bud Porter. Iackie Reese's poise is left for Betsy Edwards. To Dick McCord we willingly give some, if not all, of Ralph Lowder's seriousness. Evie Holmes' sophistication is here handed to Libby Furst. Fran Musser bequeaths his masculinity to Dick Miller. lane Parkhill's conscientiousness is a shining example for anyone. Dot Long bequeaths some of her wackiness to all serious-minded students. Dick Haley hands down his basketball ability to all new hopefuls. Dean Clyde's candid camera goes to anyone with a lot of film. Iean Hoy is to receive all the choice parking places. Bob Sproat leaves his ability to train conscientiously to Bob Hassett. Twenty- two If '.,A F gi San ll: , Hn -, Q gxny! K' Ax 5: 1 'W Q '51 Qliuiiyx -' 'X N , - 2-73251 M -. ,uf 'Q ' fm f 'i ' ' . The Tri-Hi-Y performed many services in the school and community during this school term. At Christmas time, wreaths were hung over the home room doors around the school. The club also held a party in the gym for underprivileged children. Different members of the club assisted the Red Cross in making Christmas cards, valen- tines, and Easter cards which were sent to a hospital for crippled children in Virginia. Throughout the year the club visited various churches and took charge of the Lost and Found Department. The club also made posters for the Lenten Services and in other ways helped with the Lenten program. - v f MAROON AND GRAY v 17 3, iv- - f - ---. Hi-Y Fmsr Row-R. Smith. D. Miller, W. Bechdel, C.
