Start High School Toledo, Ohio Vol. 1 Pa ttern of Stars A pattern of stars may be likened to a pat- tern of a new school. The various patterns of stars weave pictures in the heavens. In the de- velopment of a new school we too are weaving a picture, a picture of Roy C. Start High School. The Shield staff has used this theme to por- tray the growth and development of our school throughout its first year. It is only fitting that we have used a star pat- tern as a theme for this first yearbook since the star is representative of the unity within the school. The star also symbolizes the beauty, the purity, and the high standards that we, as stu- dents, hope to attain. Student Life Faculty Activities Students...... Sports. . Roy C. Start High School was officially com- pleted July 1, 1962. The school was financed through a twenty million dollar Bond Issue that was passed in 1959. This entire Bond Issue was used for new buildings. The Lathrop Company constructed the $3,134,871 structure. The school situated on 30.2 acres was designed by Richards, Bauer and Moorhead. Under normal conditions the building will ac- commodate 1800 students. Flags representative of our American hertitage provided a colorful background for the dedication ceremony of Roy C. Start High School, October 24, 1962. The dedication was a fitting climax to the long-awaited opening of our new school. It was three years ago that the citizens of Toledo ap- proved a levy to allot funds for two new high schools. Dr. Frank Brown, president of the Board of Edu- cation presented the keys to the building to our principal, Christian Thomson at the ceremony. The introduction of Roy C. Start’s family was a high- light of the program. The members of the Board of Education, heads of area school systems, and principals of public and private high schools were among the guests. An estimated 6000 area residents toured the building. Student Council mem- bers assisted in guiding the visitors through the school. They also dis- tributed floor plans of the school to the visitors. The open house also provided the P.T.A. an opportunity to launch its successful membership campaign. The appointment of Christian R. Thomson as principal of Start was one of the most important steps in weaving the pattern of our new school. Mr. Thomson had the task of getting the school ready for the opening day. Furniture, books, and special equipment had to be purchased and installed. The se- lection of a faculty required a great deal of consideration. Faculty members were trans- fered from Toledo high and junior high schools. Also some new teachers were hired. Administrators worked during the summer getting student schedules in order. The academic program is now estab- lished, but the activity program is still in the development stage. In the first year of oper- ation Start has a newspaper, yearbook, Stu- dent Council, band, and choir. Also a num- ber of special interests clubs have been or- ganized. The P.T.A. had a very successful member- ship campaign indicating that parents too are interested in weaving the pattern of Start. Students meet to catch up on the latest gossip and to brief each other on the ma- terial covered in their classes for that day. A quick stop at your locker, a gulp of water from the drinking fountain, and a hurried- ly passed note take up that meager five minutes. Just as the bell rings, you step into your next class ready to settle down to an- other hour of work. “And then she said tome...” A short phone call between classes. The Thinker Education. What is it? It is a result’ that is more than learning. It has _ its price and wants cultivation that de- mands constant work and careful study. Education is a hard task-master, but the rewards to those who serve it every day, week after week, year after year, have the satisfaction of knowing they have attained something great. To eat or not to eat... “What did you say this was?” As the bell rings, the kids hurry to the cafeteria to save seats at their favorite tables. They plop down their books and race into line. After de- vouring their sandwiches and milk, they are again ready to face the long afternoon’s work. Lunchtime offers, not only a chance to fill up empty stomachs, but an opportunity to exchange jokes and gossip with friends. Lunch is also a time to finish the homework which wasn’t com- pleted the night before. The cafeteria is one of Start’s best loved class- rooms, and lunch is the favorite subject. Toledo Board of Education | Mr. J. A. Anderson The Toledo Board of Education is out- standing in its desire to educate youth by the best means possible. It has always worked for the progress of our school system. One of its goals, that of providing good educa- tional facilities, was fulfilled upon the open- ing of the new Start High School. This group of dedicated citizens has unselfishly contrib- uted much time and effort to the advance- ment of knowledge in Toledo. We are deep- ly indebted to these people for their encouragement and support. 32 Dedication Statement To have had a share in the launching of a great high school is an unusual privilege. Within these walls great tra- ditions will be built. It is our sincere hope that those traditions will include high scholarship and all the attributes of noble citizenship. It is our hope that the teachers who gather here to give intel- lectual leadership to this portion of the youth of Toledo always will look upon their task as a sacred obligation to those who have brought knowledge to its pres- ent level; that they will endeavor to in- spire every student to reach the highest intellectual development of which each is capable. The members planned and carried out a book- fair. The profits went into a scholarship fund which will be given to a deserving member of Philos. This will be continued next year. Lectures and round- table discussions were planned for the Wednesday meetings. A foreign exchange student from Spain visited the club in February. After going on a tour of the building, he met with the club members and dis- cussed United States and European education. The thundering defeat of Detroit South- gate to the mighty Spartan eleven will go dow n in Start High football history as the first game played. It was a fitting climax for the team which had spent the summer months practicing for its initial season. The team, lacking seniors, ended the sea- son with 3—4—1 record. Our victory over Bowsher 20—0 was the beginning of an in- tense football rivalry between the two new city high schools. Start will join the city league next year with a full schedule.
