While in the process of outscoring the opposition 638 points to 112 and pinning 121 out of 168 opponents, the team won first place in the Niagara-Orleans Wrestling League. Jim Ellis, John Hey, Bob Manning, Tim Allen, and Phil Hurst were undefeated while Mark Case, Pat Ha- gan, Don Scales, Joe Monkelbaan, Harold Shenk, and Dan Yendes suffered only a single loss. Besides the regular competition, Starpoint was invited to the Maryvale Tournament to wres- tle against Maryvale, Tonawanda, and Orchard Park. Although Starpoint was by far the smallest school competing, our balanced team took the championship and one first place, with Jim Ellis winning the 115 lb. trophy. At the N.Y.S. Section VI Class A Wrestling Sectionals, the Spartans showed tremendous bal- ance by gaining 2 thirds, 4 seconds, and 2 firsts to tie for first place. Phil Hurst and Dan Yendes came in third. Mark Case, Don Scales, Bob Man- ning and Joe Monkelbaan secured second. The two first place winners were the co-captains, John Hey and Jim Ellis. John Hey and Jim Ellis went to the Western New York wrestle-offs. Both ended their four year high school wrestling careers by placing second in all of Western New York in their re- spective weight classes. This undefeated wrestling squad was led by Mr. David Sylves. Under his guidance the Spar- tans grew into a powerful, balanced team and re- corded the best season of wrestling.
