There have been two things especially memorable about this past year. With the growing responsibilities of the time that are being placed upon today's youth, has come a marked rise in the academic standards of the school. To meet these responsibilities, a greater emphasis has been placed upon those courses of study pertaining to government, mathematics, science, English, and foreign languages. The outstanding athletic teams really set the school ablaze with school spirit. Each game was anticipated with an eagerness not felt in the past years by the seniors. These things will stand out especially in our memories of '59, but, of course, we will remember also the gab sessions between classes, the proms, the coro- nation, and the club activities. Such hard work, we say, yet in the years ahead we will look back and remember '59, the year we had so much fun. DEDICATION The Orange Peel Staff has found that the dedicating of our year- book has been one of the most difficult jobs we have to do. We feel that the person chosen must not only be a present source of in- spiration to the younger students, but must have remained in the hearts and minds of those who will be leaving, as one for whom our admiration and respect will never end. Mindful of this, we of the '59 Orange Peel Staff dedicate these pages of our past to Mrs. Ethel Skinner. Her never ending patience and good humor have endeared her to us all. In the years to come, when other names and faces have been for- gotten, hers will continue to live in our memories. .qw M, f. +-X 'ww vm fm M ff 5 W f fgxssizfkfi Q W, .- an wp. BOX 620 ORANGE. TEXAS May 30, 1959 To The Students of Lutcher Stark Senior High School and Helen Carr Junior High School Just past the rnid-point of the twentieth century we find ourselves in a new age of exploration. It is commonplace to talk about launch- ing new planets and to consider the very practical possibility of detaching ourselves frorn the eartnland. This is a good time to reflect upon this simple, hornernade thought. Wherever rnan's creative spirit guides him, he must be sure to take along these bits of earth with him: integrity, reverence, and respect for honest work well done. On behalf of the faculty and the Board of Trustees, I Wish you Godspeed in all things that you do. SEASON SUMMARY The 1958 Bengal Tigers promised an exciting foot- ball campaign as they downed the Nederland Bull- dogs 14-6 in the opening game of the season for both teams. In a stunning upset, Orange handed Neder- land its first defeat in 49 regular season games. Coach Phillip's jacksonville Indians were the next victims of the Tigers, falling 30-0. The Tigers then turned their wrath on the hapless Vidor Pirates to the tune of 35-6. Breaking a two-year jinx, the power- ful Orange team crushed the Sulfur Tors 22-6. In their worst showing of the season, the Bengals then edged an inspired team of French Buffaloes 8-6. The injury-ridden Tigers and the powerful Long- view Loboes, both ranked in the top ten teams of the state, emerged from their hard fought 6 to 6 deadlock as the only remaining undefeated teams of 4-A football. In their only loss of the season, the Tigers dropped a heartbreaking 12 to 7 district opener to their old rivals, the Port Arthur Yellow jackets before a crowd of over 16,000 fans. Bounc- ing back from this bitter disappontment, the aroused Bengals crushed South Park 27 to 7, mauled Port Neches 28 to 0, and overran Beaumont 27 to 0 to win the District 11-AAAA Co-Championship. The talent-laden.- 1958 Tigers brought Stark High its first share of championship honors in history. Play- ing terrific football throughout the entire season, the 1958 team was undoubtedly the finest group of Tigers to ever take the field. SEASON SUMMARY SEASON RESULTS The Tigers completed their '59 basketball season with 17 wins and 7 defeats. In the district competi- tion the Bengals suported a four and four record, but two of these defeats were in overtime games. The squad on the average was the shortest in dis- trict, but their hustle, spirit, and the determination to win brought them out on top of their opponents. The squad was composed of six seniors, one junior, and three sophomores. Charles Alexander was picked as first team all-district and two other Tiger starters, Wayne McClelland and Garland Frank- lin, ranked on the second team. SEASON'S SUMMARY SEASQN RESULTS The 1959 Bengal nine began the baseball sea- son with a bright outlook, however, as the Tigers entered District 11-AAAA competition, the going got rough. The pitching staff consistently turned in fine performances, but the usually hard-hitting Tiger bafters failed to support the moundmen, and the team finished District play with a disappointing 3-5 won-lost count.
