IQT7 with a BRA in Finance. Ile was commissioned from OCS in jan uarv. l978. After attending Surface Warfare Officer School basic course. LCDR Yerger reported aboard USS FORREST SHERMAN IDD-9312. He ser'ved in various hillets including ASW Officer, Communications Officer. Main Propulsion Assistant. and CIC Officer. During his tour. he made one MIDFAST Force deployment. one Med deployment. an ROH and several exercises and contingency operations, including the l979 Sandinista revolution in Nicaragua. LCDR Yerger next served on the staff of Fleet Training Group. Guantanamo Bay. Cuba. During his tour he taught conventional steam engineering and damage control on hoard a wide variety of surface ships undergoing refresher training, as well as conducting OPPE Certifications for steam and gas turbine ships. ln addition to training USN personnel. he supenised training on the last U.S. Coast Guard steamships and West German Adams class destroyers. His next assignment was to the Naval post Graduate School in Monterey. CA. During his time in Monterey, LCDR Yerger complet- ed the requirements for kX25 and XX27 Subspecialty codes and eamed a Master of Arts in National Security Affairs. Following NPS. LCDR Yerger's first department head tour was a Chief Engineer in CHARLES F. ADAMS IDDG-21 homeported in Mayport. Horida. During his time aboard ADANIS. LCDR Yerger deployed again to the Middle Fast as well as another Mediterranean deployment. During his time aboard ADAMS. successfully completed two regularly scheduled Operational Propulsion Plant Exams and received SURFIANT awards for engineering and damage control excellence. ln addition. the ADAMS was awarded the SUR- FLANT Battle Efficiency Award for destroyers for two competitive cycles. LCDR Yerger next reported aboard the USS BELKNAP lCG-261. flagship of Commander. Sixth Fleet., homeported in Gaeta, Italy. While serving as Chief Engineer in BELKN.-LP. LCDR Yerger supervised the ship's first successful full power trial in five years, suc- cessfully completed OPPE and INSURV and participated in numerous exercises and contingency operations in Mediterranean. Dur- ing his time on board. the BELKNAP eamed SL'RFL-XNT Battle Efficiency Award for cruiser for two competitive cycles. LCDR Yerg- er stood condition three watch 5 Tactical Action Officer. LCDR Yerger's next duty assignment was to the OPNAV staff in Washington. D.C. As a member of the and Evaluation Branch of the Theater and Strategic Nuclear Warfare Division tOP-85h of the Plans. Policy. and Operations Directorate tOP-063, he utilized his subspecialty to act as the SIOP, RISOP analyst for the Nasy. He also served as a member of the Strategic Tech- nologies Assessment Group. part of the CNO sponsored study STRATPL-AN 2010. charting the Nasy's course into the next century.
