FORDE Instructor in stringed instruments Page4 CHIPPEWAN 1939 Senior Class Histor In the fall of 1935, forty-seven boys and girls re- sponded to the call of knowledge by entering Starbuck High School as Freshmen. As the doors were thrown open on that memorable day Manda Aaberg, John An- derson, Earl Anondson, Henrik Aune, Eldora Berg, Esther Berg, Alice Braaten, Elvin Branch, Arlane Brandvold, Arvid Bredeson, Evelyn Bredeson, Anna Marie Brevig, Edward Byhre, Pearl Eidberg, Marie Engebretson, Pearl Erickson, Alfield Forbord, Orvald Forbord, Adeline Gaarder, Arvid Gorder, Clarice Gor- der, Norman Hagen, Viola Hagestuen, Kermit Hanson, Pearl Hofstad, Paul Johnshoy, Marion Landaas, Mar- tha Larson, Blanche Lingen, Palvin Lokken, Lester Lorvig, Ralph Norland, Julia Ranum, Mildred Ronnie, Lester Sanvik, Viola Sanvik, Ralph Skinner, Gladys Smedstad, Thomas Stoen, Juliet Sylvester, Helen Thompson, Andrew Thorstad, and Claire Pearl Tol- stad entered and became classmates for the year. At our first class meeting the following officers were elected: Henrik Aune, president, Pearl Eidberg, vice president, Lester Sanvik, secretary, Clarice Gorder, treasurer, Miss Lilian Charlesworth, class advisor. In October the Sophomores gave a party in our honor. To show our appreciation we gave them a re- turn party at a later date. After nine months of work and three months of va- cation, the Bells of Knowledge summoned us once more, this time as sophomores. This year Bertha Wollan, David Wollan, Luverne Hanson, and Howard Noyes joined our ranks. Milford Johnson joined our class but dropped out during the winter months. Dur- ing the year our number was lessened as Alice Braaten, Arvid Gorder, Juliet Sylvester and Howard Noyes left school. Arvid Bredeson, Anna Marie Brevig and Irene Peterson moved from Starbuck. The first class meet- ing was held and Alfield Forbord was elected presi- dent, Paul Johnshoy, vice president, Pearl Eidberg, secretary, Lester Sanvik, treasurer, Fergus Nygaard, class advisor. After school had started we gave a party in honor of the in-coming Freshmen. Our Sophomore year was a success under the leadership of Mr. Nygaard. As we entered our Junior year we began to feel our responsibilities as we were now upper classmen. At our class meeting the following officers were elected: Andrew Thorstad, president, Paul Johnshoy, vice presi- dent, Mildred Ronnie, secretary, Boyd Opheim, treas- urer, Miss Mae Schendel, class advisor. On November 19, we gave our class play, Just Country Folks, un- der the able direction of Mr. Joseph Lunstad, which proved a success in every way. In the spring we gave the customary Junior-Senior banquet, carried out in Japanese theme. The success of our banquet was in a large measure due to the guidance of our class advisor, Miss Schendel, At last we are Seniors and are on the doorstep of the goal that we set out for on that memorable day four years ago. Our ranks were depleted as Kermit Hanson and Ralph Skinner left. At the beginning of the year we elected the following officers: Pearl Eid- berg, president, Archie Otteson, vice president, Paul Johnshoy, secretary, Thomas Stoen, treasurer, Supt. W. A. Peterson, class advisor. This year our girls' basket- ball team was victorious in the class tournaments. Our class play, Ted Drops In, under the direction of Miss Lilian Charlesworth was well received. We were de- lightfully entertained by the Juniors at the Junior- Senior banquet. We are now about to enter the school of life and may we be guided by our motto, Today Decides To- morrow. But as we start a new year in the world we shall strive after the perfection we hope to attain in the fullness of time. -Pearl Erickson. Senior Class Will We, the Class of 1939 of the Starbuck High School, being of sound and disposing mind and memory and realizing that we must part with sundry honors, tal- ents, looks and emotions, do hereby pronounce this our last Will and Testament. We hereby bequeath to our Superintendent our al'- fections and respect for his careful guidance for years over the storm-tossed sea. 'To the faculty we do hereby bequeath the fond memories of our brilliant class and wish to express our most tender and sincere sympathy for the loss they are about to experience. We solemnly bequeath to the unsuspecting Sopho- mores a deeper sense of duty and wider view on life. To the Freshmen we leave our brains, and we are sure they will make good use of them. Signed-Recording Lawyers Orvald Forbord Norman Hagen Class Prophecy A few highlights on our class on this fine September morn in 1959. I am reading the screaming headlines of the New Prairie Broadcaster and here in bold type I read that Ralph Norland has almost reached his goal. He is a scientist in research, developing a cow that will live on snow so he can make ranching flourish in the Antarctic. On returning from his non-stop flight from pole to pole, it has just been reported that Boyd Opheim just made a forced fahemlj landing in Sioux Falls and now he has to catch up on lost time. Henrik Aune and John Anderson are jointly farm- ing in Iowa, developing the latest farming ideas and are heading the Department of Interior's Farm Re- search Division. In the Movie Corner I see that Pearl Eidberg and Mildred Ronnie have just accepted leading roles in the Follies of 1960. On the Social Page we learn some other interesting facts, namely, that Clarice Gorder is still drumming away ns hard as ever, but of course not on a drum, and that Lester Sanvik and Gladys Smedstad are co- skippers of a trim schooner and are now sailing the South Seas on a pleasure jaunt. They've got sea- blood in them. No wonder they were so anxious to have a certain long class motto back in the good old days of '39. A colorful ad in the inside section reads as follows: M. T. Stoen and Co. Dude Ranch, Orvald Forbord, Chief Instructor. Archie Otteson, who is a First Lieutenant at West Point, is on a vacation shooting mountain lions in Montana. Lester Lorvig and Norman Hagen are in big business. They are operating the Godustum Brush and Mop Co. and they also have one of the largest office forces in the country at their direction. They knew where to get good stenographers, namely from our class of '39. Martha, Adeline, Blanche, Esther, Julia, Marie, and Manda top off their staff. Some inside facts on the nation's entertainment re- veal that Viola Sanvik and Helen Thompson are play- ing with Bennie Goodman at the Orpheum tonight. Marion Landaas, Claire Tolstad, Pearl Erickson, and Alfield Forbord are providing the laughs that accomp- any the jokes on Elvin Branch's new Jello program. I suppose I'll find myself in the comic strip but enough of this newsy news. I think I'll turn to the editorial page. -Paul J ohnshoy. Page 6 I J , K i ' l 6 il 31? This year the High School Mixed Chorus consists ol' approximately fifty members. The chorus, under the able direction of Mr. R. S. Forde, has learned to under- stand and appreciate good music. The chorus has shown its ability to sing by appearing on various school programs throughout the year. The aim ol' the chorus is to develop genuine appreciation for the good in music, to develop voices, and to be of active service to the surrounding community, The chorus participated in the District Music Con- test held at Glenwood, April 29. Here it received a B rating, which is considered a high rating as there were no A's given. lf the chorus keeps progressing as it has in previous years, we are sure it will be an outstanding organization in this community. The Cecelian Glee Club of 1938-1939 is composed of thirty-one able and efficient members, under the skillful leadership ol' Mr. R. S. Forde. This organiza- tion, which has had only one hour each Week for re- hearsal, received a BU rating at the District Music contest at Glenwood. Duc to the fact that no A's were awarded to any Glee Club in our class, our Glee Club feels truly proud ol' its BH rating. As no A's were given, the Glee Clubs receiving a B rating were entitled to take part in the contest in Minneap- olis, but because of a late notice, our Glee Club did not go, OFFICERS President - ---- - Helen Thompson Vice President - - Sylvia Ramstad Secretary - - Ardis Skoglund T1'0g15U1'01' - ---- - D6ll0I'Zl Hld8lYl Librarians - Verna Landmark, Mildred Olson Page 14 CHIPPEWAN 1939 Starbuck School Band Standing--Clarice Gorder, Ardis Skoglund, Dorothy Samuelson, James Moen, R. The Starbuck High School Band is the largest musi- cal organization in our school. It consists of 45 mem- bers under the able direction of Mr. R. S. Forde. Many new instruments have been purchased by the school this year. Among these are the tympanies, which were formerly the property of a member of the New York Symphony Orchestra. The band has attended music clinics at Alexandria and Morris. It has also participated in the school's annual Christmas Concert and the Spring Music Festi- val. At the District Music Contest held at Glenwood the band received a B rating for its selection, Sanctu- ary of the Heart by Ketelbey. Seated-Ralph Norland, Henry Nodland, Archie Otteson, Boyd Opheim, Vernon Larson, Paul Johnshoy. When Coach Nygaard issued a call for basketeers, about 25 boys, headed by Co-Captains, Archie Otteson and Boyd Opheim, together with Vernon Larson. the third letterman, answered this call. After several weeks of constant practice the boys felt ready 1'or their first game. Coach Nygaard assign- ed berths to Archie Otteson, Boyd Opheim, Vernon Larson, Ralph Norland and Henry Nodland for the first game with Glenwood. A close, hard-fought battle was the result, with the Bucks coming out on the long end of a 27-24 count. In the next game with Osakis, we won by a narrow margin of four points and gained revenge for the one- point victory Osakis scored over us last year. Wheaton and Brooten fell as the next victims by the scores of 33 to 20 and 33 to 18, respectively. In the last game before the Christmas holidays we defeated Benson for our first victory over them since Coach Nygaard took over the coaching duties. On December 21 the annual alumni game was play- ed. The high school emerged victors, making the wins and losses six to five for the high school in the past eleven years. After a rest of two weeks the Bucks again started rolling up victories. The first victim was Alberta. In a close game at Barrett we again won 27 to 25. Han- cock, Chokio, and Elbow Lake fell before the rampag- ing Bucks. Our record of eleven consecutive wins was marred by a defeat at the hands of Wheaton by two points. With their minds still troubled by the defeat by Wheaton, the Bucks outscored and outplayed a strong Benson quintet by a margin of ten points. Now the Bucks took things into their own hands and rolled up five victories by large margins. The victims were Brooten, Barrett, Hancock, Alberta, and Bel- grade. The last game of the regular season was play- ed at Glenwood. The game was fast and rough, with a total of 25 fouls being called. Norland and Opheim left the game in the fourth quarter on fouls. Neither team gained a lead of more than four points through- out the game. Glenwood led 5 to 3 at the end of the first quarter, and 9 to 7 at the half. The Bucks led 17 to 16 at the end of the third quarter but Glenwood outscored the Bucks in the last quarter to win by a score of 23 to 20. The sub-district tournament was held at Morris, March 2 and 3. In the first game against Hancock, the Bucks were forced to play without Larson and Opheim who had been ill with the flu the first part of the week. After a shaky start, the Bucks settled down and soon had a lead. The final score was 23 to ll. Morris defeated Alberta and received the right to play Starbuck in the finals. In the championship game, Starbuck played without Norland, and Larson and Opheim were not strong enough to play true to form for any length of time, so Nodland and Otteson had to carry the greater burden of play. The tall Morris team controlled the rebounds and therefore had control of the ball the greater part Page 16 CHIPP1-:WAN 1939 QBASKETBALL CONTNUEDD of the game. Larson led a rally shortly after the half but the team was not able to overcome the lead Morris had. The final score was 23 to 19 in favor of Morris. The regulars won 17 out of 18 games for a season's percentage of .895. They scored 632 points for an av- erage of 33.2 point per game. The opponents scored a total of 367 points for an average of 19.3 points per game. Starbuck committed a total of 222 fouls to the opponents 199. The B team won 15 out of 17 games for a percen- tage of .882. It scored a total of 286 points for an average of 22.7 points per game. The opponents scor- ed 211 points for an average of 12.4 points per game. We played 11 home games and 8 out-of-town games. One game with Chokio was postponed because of the bad weather. It is a very difficult task for a Senior to check in his suit for the last time, never to have the chance to use it again. So those who still have a chance to wear a suit, use the privilege to the best of your ability. We wish next year's team the best of luck. May 24 Baseball practice was started on April 17 under the direction of Coach Harris Engebretson. A squad of about 30 boys reported daily for practice. This num- ber was reduced to 19 after the first game. They are Captain Archie Otteson, Vernon Larson, Norman Hag- en, Boyd Opheim, Orville Dahlseng, Arthur Berg, Henry Nodland, Walter Nelson, Wallace Hoium, Ar- den Brenden, Roy Berens, Sidney Aslagson, Perry Berg, Earl Person, Norris Evjen, Robert Schroeder, Arvid Sylvester, Gerhard Lingen. Lester Sanvik is student manager and Gordon Wiltse, assistant manager. The first game was played with Cyrus on May 1. A large number of errors were committed by both sides. Although we outhit our opponents, we were on the short end of a 10 to 8 count. Our next game was played on May 3 with Glenwood. After the first inning little scoring was done. Glenwood scored four runs and the Bucks five in this inning. The game turned out to be a pitcher's battle between Otteson and Peper. The winning run was scored in the eleventh inning by Glenwood. The final score was 7 to 6. On May 8 we played Benson. This also proved to be a very interesting game. We came from behind in the last inning to Win 11 to 10. A return game was played with Cyrus on May 13. Larson, on the mound for the Bucks, set back the Cyrus players with 4 hits and sent 12 men back to the bench via the strike-out route. The final score was 11 to 2 in favor of the Bucks. Qn May 15 we played a return game at Benson. We emerged victors by a score of 9 to 2. We lost to Morris by a score of 13 to ll and won from Chokio by a score of 6 to 0, Larson pitching a NO RUN, NO HIT game. Glenwood won the final game on May 24 by a 3 to 1 score. Hafer, was given by the Senior Class, Friday, May 12, 19.19. The play was coached by Miss Lilian Charlesworth. On peaceful Maple Point Farm lives Betty Carlton, owner of the thorough-bred Flyaway. Into this plea- sant atmosphere drops city-bred Ted Lansing and his friend, Lonnie, on business connected with the high- way. Instantly smitten with the charms of Betty, and her neighbor, Sally, they take jobs as farm hands un- der Betty-with hilarious results. The highway fight waxes hot, and it is decided to settle it by a race be- tween Flyaway and Joe Kane's Madcap. When Fly- away's jockey fails to show up, Betty rides to a thrill- ing victory. As a result, he is bitter toward the girl and the Corliss family. Henry discovers an amateur house-breaker, whose only offense is the desire to pretend and to be in the home that was once her mother's. They decide to play a game in which neither is to try to find the name of the other. This leads to severe complications, since she is the younger sister of his former girl-friend. Matters are finally settled to the satisfaction of all and have their happy ending for Hen1'y and Virginia. GIRLS' BASKETBALL Girls' Basketball, which has been organized to pro- mote an interest in athletics, has been given fine at- tention among the high school girls. As Freshmen, in the year 1935 and 1936, we joined the girl's basketball squads. Under the able supervi- sion of Miss Olson LMrs. Irving Helgesonl, our physical education teacher, we practised twice a week. In our inter-class tournament, we lost to the well-groomed Sophomores by a one-point margin, 16-17. In our Sophomore year, under the capable super- vision of Miss Schendel, we hoped to make a better showing that we did in our Freshmen year, but fate was against us again. Although we defeated the Fresh- men with a great score, 22-4, we had to be satisfied with third place in the tournament. During the year 1937-1938 we were again practicing two nights a week with the high goal in mind, that of winning the championship. But as usual, fate was once more against us, we losing to the Sophomores by a score of 30-25. At last our last year of high school basketball was rearing. All went out for good practices and as we had neter taken a champlonihip, we decided to play the best basketball possible. By good team work, we were able to conquer the Freshmen with a decisive score ol' 24-6, thus receiving our Well-fought for championship. Since there is no more high school basketball for us. we shall always remember the many pleasant hours we have spent among our worthy advisors, opponents, and classmates, JUNIOR-SENIOR BANQUET Under a network of green streamers, with lighting effected by colorful Japanese lanterns, the Junior- Senior banquet was held at the school auditorium on Friday, May 20. Cherry trees, covered with hand- made pink blossoms, were used to make a Japanese garden. The Senior guests were ushered into a lounge which led to the garden proper. Here there was a Japanese rock garden, which included a goldfish pond. There were twenty tables with places for four laid at each table. The place cards were miniature jinrikishaws with a Japanese pulling them. Between the spokes the menu and program were printed. Favors of tiny, Japanese lanterns filled with nuts decorated these tables. During the banquet, the following program was given: Address of Welcome .......... One period a day was devoted to learning the Rudiments of Music. Mr. Forde directed the school band, girl's glee club, junior mixed chorus and senior mixed chorus. Each student who desired received individual instruction in half-hour periods, one period each week. Mrs. Forde gave individual instruction on stringed instruments one day a week. About 175 pupils in the grades and high school are members of one or more of the musical organizations this year. The groups have appeared on the following pro- grams: Christmas, Spring Festival, District and State Music Contest, Baccalaureate, Memorial Day, and Commencement Exercises. The music department is developing very rapidly and successfully. The training in the grades is show- ing great improvement. If such improvement can- tinues the future will no doubt be a great success. STRING ENSEMBLE AND STRING QUINTETTE The String Ensemble under the direction of Mrs. R. Forde was organized in the earlier part of this year. At that time there were 13 members. Their first pub- lic appearance was for the Christmas concert. The members of this organization were as follows: First violin, Clarice Gorder, Ruth Larson, Paul Samuelson, Second violin, Lenora Berg, Gladys Smedstad, Dor- othy Samuelson, Alva Bloomquist, and Naomi Foss, Viola, Ardis Skoglundg Cello, Dellora Hidem and Mar- garet Sanvikg Bass, Lillian Stadsvoldg Piano, Pearl Eidberg. The Christmas program was the final performance of the String Ensemble because this group was too large to enter the Spring Music Festival. Most of the members continued to take indivdual lessons under the instruction of Mrs. Forde. The String Quintette was composed of Clarice Gor- der, first violin, Ruth Larson, second, Lenora Berg, third, Dellora Hidem, cello, and Lillian Stadsvold, bass. This group attended the music contest at Glenwood and there received an A rating. On May 5 the group represented Starbuck at the State Music Contest. They received a C rating. This was considered a very commendable rating in as much as no A's were given and only four B's. LYCEUM PROGRAMS November 15, 1938. Mr. W. B. Parkenson presented a complete double reed ensemble. These artists were heard in solos and beautiful group interpretations. December 2, 1938. A show full of surprises and laughs was presented by Magical Gordien. He was a magical humorist and wonder worker of modern miracles. January 12, 1939. There was a lyceum number called, t'Oddities of the Jungle. A. M. Fee brought three monkeys and a bear and told us about their habits. January 13, 1939. A program was given by C. H. Berglund on Dry Ice, Liquid Air and Spun Glass. February 9, 1939. J. Franklin Caveny, an artist, sculptor, and platform personality entertained the art demonstrations made with his flying school with fingers. He drew with chalk crayons and sculptured with mud. March 30, ventures in tion pictures and slides of his 1282 mile journey thru Wyoming. May 18, 1939. The Concordia Trio of Moorhead, con- sisting of Thelma Dahlstrom, contraltog Delores Kron, pianist: and Robert Lium, violinist, gave a concert in the school auditorium to an appreciative audience. This program was sponsored by the local Girl Scout Troop. In addition to the above numbers our school has enjoyed educational moving picture films sent out by the Dudley Visual Education Service every other Mon- day of each Week. These films have been shown dur- ing the regular class periods during the day in the grades and high school. A total of 16 such programs have been given. 1939. On that date people from far and near came to enjoy themselves. Side shows, concessions, and movies furnished entertainment for both the young and old. Lunch was served throughout the entire evening to those who so desired. Later on in the evening, a fine program was given, after which came the event that was looked forward to most, namely, the crowning of the Carnival Queen. Each of the four classes had chosen a candidate for the honor. The Seniors chose Luverne Hanson as their candidate, the Juniors Lillian Stadsvold, the Sopho- mores Sylvia Ramstad, and the Freshmen Valborg Johnson. All the ticket sellers worked hard, but the ambitious Freshmen worked the hardest and Miss Val- borg Johnson was chosen as Carnival Queen of 1939. The event ended with the drawing of the lucky num- ber for the door prizes. The Carnival has been a huge success in Starbuck every year, both financially and socially. It is spon- sored by the High School Athletic Association, and the proceeds are used to help defray expenses of athletics, music, and declamation. Hard work and cooperation are needed to make a successful carnival, but we have always been repaid in full when the big event was over. 1939 CHIPPEWAN Page 23 5:00 Daily Record - Buddy Norland arises to hear the cracking of dawn. 5:15-Dawn cracks. 5:30 5:45 6:00 6:05 - Blondie Aune turns off the first alarm clock. -Buddy just finished the first cow. -Alarm clocks ringing all over the rural neigh- borhood. -Blondie shuts off the second alarm clock. 1:00-Bell rings and all is blank. 1:03-Tommy sound asleep. 1:05-Miss Charlesworth still trying to obtain order in Latin II class. 2:01-Marian begins a joke-Alfield laughs by mistake and Marian becomes rattled. 3:55-School almost out-seniors breathe sigh of relief. 4:00-School dismissed-Adeline hurt in rush. 4:05-Teachers complain that they are not able to force the students to leave. 6:20- Hop-A-Long Johnshoy arises to take his sitting up exercises. 4:10-6:00-Blanche busy correcting papers and typing. 6:05-Seniors busily feeding their faces. 6:22-Johnshoy sits up and then dozes off to sleep. 6:45-Manda and Claire leave for town. 6:30-Blondie gets up only to find Helen is still on his mind.
