The following were enrolled: Lillian Tollefson, Levin Tollefson, Olava Tes- sem, Jeanette Brenden, Jeanette Hagen, Ethel Smedstad, Monnie Skaret, Adolph Carlson, William Markland, Anna Mickelson, Edna Mickelson, Teg- nar Hustad, Florence Arneson, Anstes Smedstad, Lester Smedstad, Esther Lee, Rudolph Lee, Arthur Johnson, Thilma Rosten, Elvin Feigum, Luella Pederson, Luella Haugen, Sylvan Opheim and Myrtle Wollan. During our Freshmen year, we must admit, we were somewhat over- shadowed by the Seniors and Juniors. The following freshmen quit before the year was over: Anna, Edna, Anstes, Arthur, Elvin and Luella. But our advisor, Mr. Wright, guided us so we, as gentlemen of courage, and la- dies of good taste, finished the school year with flying colors. After three month's vacation the Bells of Knowledge summoned us once more. Our number was depleted when we entered as Sophomores as Tegnar, Sylvan, Thilma, Lester, Esther, Rudolph, Florence and Luella did not come back. Harry Allan enrolled but quit before the year was over. However, we faced the activities and struggles of the year with courage but looked anxiously forth to vacation time when we again would be re- lieved from study. At last we were upper classmen. We were strenghtened by three new members, Clara Throngaard, Clarence Friedman and Florence Steffen. The superior tests of the year were our class play, entitled, When Smith Step- ped Out , and our J unior-Senior banquet, which by hard work and by the help of our class advisor, Mr. Qualley, were a glorious success. At last we are Seniors. The hopes of previous years have begun to materialize. Florence Steffen left us but Torben Wold entered into our class, making the total number twelve. The lessons we have learned in our intercourse with each other will never be forgotten and may we all en- deavor to follow through life our motto: Before Us Lies The Timber, Let Us Build . -. f AU -, ..-..-.,..--.-.-------....--..---..--------..----.------------- x o.'.i'i:c-1:1-:-1 9 :I :-3' so 3- : :ic 3 vc-Q:-:Aof:-o-:--:H:-c- : :-: :- .- .- .- Q V. v ,l is .l . ,l'-'Nl E -fl JK , WMM? ,Q l M 1. .H t. 1. 43 'l, l , 'ill QV ill ,X full -x at ' f will ,.f-1' ff SKARET fflxlfr' :H ' M1-'DQY1 I would I were a soldier 2111 QM aff? To our beloved teachers, Supt. Peterson, Miss Charlesworth, Miss 2152 Foss and Mr. Engebretson, we bequeath the memory of our industrious habits, our polite behavior, our remarkable personalities and our jolly good C' times. To the Junior Class, our worthy successors, we leave our place in the assembly and all the privileges we have enjoyed as Seniors. To the Sophomores, we intrust more level headedness and good judg- ment to help them carry on their future work in H. S. To the Freshmen Class we bequeath our dignity. We are sure they will need it. Adolph Carlson leaves his pull with the out-of-town women to Ralph Chalenburg. Jeanette Brenden's fondness for rosy cheeks is bestowed on Virginia Heegard. We confer on Mable Aaberg one lock of Clarence Friedman's hair, to light her way through school. Evelyn Brevig is hereby presented some of the height she has long craved for, by Jeanette Hagen. Torbin Wold leaves his meekness to Norman Barsness. William Markland in humble spirit, leaves to any girl who will accept it, his name, plus a M. R. S. fMrs.J degree. The Seniors of next year will not need to fear low grades as Olava Tessem leaves them her abundance of A's. Ethel Smedstad willingly submits her ambitious nature and knowledge of physics to Edmund Smedstad. Clara Throngaard bequeaths her golden silence and pleasing ways to Jennie Hofstad. Rejoice, Bonita Markland! Lillian Tollefson wills to you her Senior dignity, and ability to control her temper. In order that the absence of the Seniors in the assembly will not be felt so keenly, Levin Tollefson leaves his vocal energy to Evelyn Holen. Monnie Skaret regretfully leaves his athletic ability to George Aune. Since our possessions, which we do not choose to carry with us, are fewer in number than those who are eager to receive gifts, we wish to con- sole those who received no gifts by saying that they are considered able to help themselves. Ifell into a deep reverie and the only question I had in my mind was, Where are all the 1930'ers ? Adolph Carlson, she told me, had entered the matrimonial tangle with a cowgirl from Colorado. At present they were running a ranch of 10,000 acres. Adolph looked very attractive in his cowboy attire. Next we saw a mansion in Washington, D. C. Here lived two spinsters, Jeanette Brenden and Lillian Tollefson-old maids of the first degree. They were having the time of their lives entertaining all the good looking foreign ambassadors. Then we saw a tropical scene and the leading figure was Torbin Wold. He is now doing missionary work in Australia. Torbin, you know, always looked so reverent. The woman gazed and we saw a court scene. Jeanette Hagen and Clarence Friedman were having a divorce suit. I surely felt uneasy when I saw their six youngsters gathered together in the front row. Immediately a dark haired nurse appeared and at once I knew it was Clara Throngaard. She had recently received a medal for having acted as nurse for fifteen years in the town of New Prairie. By the way, New Prairie now has a population of 10,000. Next we saw a man on his way to Northfield, Minnesota to address the St. Olaf students at an alumni banquet. It was Levin Tollefson. He is now pastor at Fargo, North Dakota. Levin was driving a big Lincoln car. Of course he drove very slowly, avoiding all mud puddles. Then we saw William Markland walking down the streets of Minnea- polis. William had been sent as a delegate to the Young People's Luther League and instead of going to the meetings he had attended every mat- inee in Minneapolis and St. Paul, and was having a wonderful time. The woman gazed again and the curly-haired girl Ethel Smedstad ap- peared. She had become America's most notable movie star and her latest picture, now being shown at the Orpheum Theatre in New York, was, Why Babies Leave Home . Evidently, The Dummy , and When Smith Stepped Out must have had some effect on Ethel. Then I wondered what Monnie Skaret was doing. Oh Yes, there he was. Monnie is now basketball coach at St. Olaf besides being professor of Physics, Chemistry and Religion. Monnie must have profited from his ex- perience as coach for the Seniors in 1930. Lastly appeared Olava Tessem, who is now a famous suffragette lead- er in Porto Rico and is also making quite a hit with the Porto Rican men. Many of these men were new to the game and the boys were handicapped in that there were not enough men to give them a good scrimmage. Later in the season many men dropped out until at the end. of the season there remained only thirteen. G L E N W 0 0 D The season opened with Starbuck opposing the veteran Glenwood team. As this was the first game of the season for Starbuck very erratic football was played. The final whistle found Starbuck at the short end of a 72-0 score. PARKERS PRAIRIE Our first home game was played with Parkers Prairie. In this game the Starbuck warriers got off to a good start but could not work the ball over for a score. The Parkies consequently emerged victorious with a score of 8-0. M 0 R R I S The next Friday the team journeyed to Morris, determined to repeat the defeat given Morris the year before. However, we were unable to cope with Morris' big team. The final score was 46-0. W H E A T 0 N In this game every player on the Starbuck team played good football. The inttrference worked fine and the defense was like a stonewall. When the final whistle blew we were leading the strong Wheaton team by a 19-0 score. This was the only game that the Starbuck team functioned as smoothly as it was capable of doing. H A N C 0 C K Starbuck rad things their own way with the Hancock team. Wide end runs and spectacular passes featured this game. The score at the end of the game was 40-0. - M I L A N The final game of the season was played at Milan. Several of the regu- lars were crippled as a result of previous games and this handicapped their preformance. Starbuck started the game with a rush andiseemed to have everything their own way but could not put the ball behind the final chalk mark. However, Starbuck weakened as the game progressed and Milan was able to run up three touchdowns plus two points. All their touchdowns were made on passes. Late in the game Starbuck made a touchdown on a forward pass and also added the extra point making the final score 20-7 . This was the final game for two regulars. Torbin Wold and Monnie Skaret, who will graduate this spring. Basketball practice wasn't started until Christmas vacation because the new gym wasn't completed until that time. About fifteen men respond- ed to coach Engebretson's call. During the two weeks vacation the practices were supervised by Olaf Engen and Elmer Aalberg. T H E A L U M N I The first game of the season was played with the Alumni. Neither team had benefited from much practice so the game produced an even match. The Alumni had three regulars from last year's squad, Aaberg, Gorder, and Anderson and with Helgeson,Dahlager and Nordberg they composed a strong team. The High School boys, however, held the upper hand throughout the game and the final score was 18-14. STARBUCK INDEPENDENTS The second game was played immediately after vacation with the Bucks . The Bucks had the advantage on account of their many years of experience. The final score was 26-16 in favor of the Independents. On March 12, the Bucks and the High School team again tussled. In this game the high school boys showed their superiority by smothering the Independents by a score of 26-4. The Bucks didn't get a field goal, for every attempt at the High School defense failed. C Y R U S On Jan. 17, Cyrus came here determined to give us a drubbing. This was the first high school competition tackled and the boys had a chance to show their ability. Cyrus was unable to work through the Starbuck defense and were held to one field goal. The final score was 19-5. On Feb. 8, We gave Cyrus a return game at the Cyrus gym.
