CLASS PROPHECY And suddenly, visibly, the bare earth stopped, but continued under a shimmering robe of velvet as far as human eye could see. A robe, yes, whose slight majestic movements send upon the sparkling shores its pounding waves, caressing and re- treating, slowly, incessantly. Then the salty tangent breeze began to blow slowly o’er this robe and softly it whispered secrets to the high boughs of the trees. As I stood in the shadows, amazed at the beauty, I was suddenly overcome by a strong feeling and at the same time some mysterious power beckoned me into the moon- light. There I stood as in a trance while the winds from the four corners of the earth whispered the whereabouts and positions of my senior classmates at Star High School. Listen closely and I will reveal to you these future secrets. ‘Twas not surprising to hear that Vera McKinnon, after discovering a cure for her aches and pains, was peddling her new pills in a local drug store. At last Billie Kern was back at Star High Schoolas coach of a champion basket- ball team. A dream come true, for Joe Newsom was in Alaska teaching the Eskimos new methods of hunting. B. J. Maness: ‘‘A dignified preacher of Allreds. ’ Leon Needham was associated with Black Ankle Home Brew Company. Get a view of this! Betty Martin is a model for the Powers Modeling Agency in New York, Beginning her stage career, Mary Frances Freeman was in the role of a new Broadway hit, ‘‘Bashful Frances’’, Clinton Davis had become a Diesel mechanic on the Silver Meteor, employed by the Seaboard Railroad. Johnny Ray had stepped out of the spotlight, when playboy Larry Thompson step- ped in. i Using her majestic spirits and winning smile Betsy Threatt had become a well- liked dog fancier. Jack Cole had become a famous mortician when, one day, he put up the sign, ‘ Let Cole shovel when cold,’’ Get a load of this! Carl Greene, private owner of a counterfeiting machine: making his own greenbacks in Ether, After finishing law school Charles Davis was a well-known detective associated with the F.B.I, in Washington. The best of pals, Celia Needham and Claris Mabe were continuing their friend- ship working together in the Montgomery County Hospital as two outstanding nurses. A ray of moonlight flashed over the sign, ‘‘Floyd’s Grocery Store’’, which told me that Jack Floyd had taken over his father’s business in Ether. Clifton Allen was stationed in Norfolk, Virginia, a chief petty officer, while Alvin Wright was enjoying life as a sargeant in the army. Representing our class as an inventor, Richard Mashburn has made a formula for an invisible ink which becomes visible when blown upon, Reece Lemonds was occupying a seat in Congress as a Senator from North Caro- lina, Faintly I heard the winds whisper that I, Mary Evans, was a secretary of a law firm in Detroit. But these are all; the waves and the whispering of the breeze ceased. I crept back into the shadows a wiser prophet.

LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT We the Graduating Class of 1953, being about to pass out of this sphere of education in full possession of a ‘‘crammed ’ mind, a well-trained memory, and a sound body, do ‘draw up”’ and publish this, our last will and testament, hereby making void any and all former wills or promises theretofore made. It has been declared in the following manner: To our parents and friends we extend our sincere thanks and appreciation for the privileges they have made it possible for us to enjoy during our stay at Star High School. Mr. Fields, our principal, who has brought so many fresh and new ideas to help us in our activities, we wish to thank you from the bottom of our hearts. To Mrs, Shamburger, our advisor, we express our heartfelt gratitude for your patience, guidance and leadership; our sincere thanks for what you have so cheerfully done and tried to do for each one of us. We trust that you may have real satisfaction in the years to come, To our faculty we leave words of enduring gratitude for the work they have done for us and their able and never-tiring efforts to help us in all we tried to do, either as individuals or asa class. We bequeath to the Freshman Class to be, a keen determination to reach a high goal in life, and also our encouragement, Our courage and hope for better days to come, which we have gained during our school career are left to the Sophomores. Lots of luck and our very best wishes goto the Juniors. May they always endeavor to do their best to master their duties and responsibilities. And to the rising Seniors, we leave a plan to attain and a way to do it; a goal in life anda desire to pursue it; and our Senior dignity. May they uphold it forever, To our successors we must also leave our place in the hearts and thoughts of our teachers, which is the one thing hard for us to part with. We trust that it will be the Class of 1954’s most precious possession, as it has been ours, Thus, we the Seniors do hereby make the following bequests to the members of the Class of °54, Our class president, Joe Newsom, leaves his gavel to his good friend Phil Welch, incoming president of the Class of 1954. That politician’s smile of Larry Thompson’s will be left to Lester Hess. Mary Evans leaves her whistles from the boys to Betty J. Owen and Jean Thompson, To John Davis goes Reece Lemond’s position as the cutest boy of the Senior Class, Carolyn Greene and Nancy Johnson will receive Mary F, Freeman’s quietness and attentive- ness in class. Jack Cole passes on his job of keeping the girls supplied with chewing gum to Kenneth Hinson, Billie Kern leaves her position as right forward on the basketball team and her ability to shoot goals to Joanne Caudill. Betty Martin passes her wisecracks on to Mildred Allen and Betty Cagle. Claris Mabe wishes to pass on part of her love affairs and profitable schemes to Ethel Free- man--but not all of them, To Juanita Cochrane and Annie G, Allen goes a fairly sizable portion of Celia Ann’s far- fetched dreams, To James Hooker goes Jack Floyd’s ability, but not his beauty. He fears he’ll still have need of that and can’t be coaxed to leave it behind. Jack Auman is the receiver of Leon Needham’s bashfulness. ‘ Lib’? Greene Davis leaves her winning ways with the boys to Doris Kern, Carl Greene’s burning blushes are to be inherited by Walter Shore. Those flirty ways practiced by Charles Davis are left to Charles Lassiter and Harvey Car- TACKS Richard Mashburn leaves his grades for Hansard Lewis to bring up to par. And he figures he’s pretty lucky to get out. Those flashy shirts and ties worn by Teddy Hancock are passed on to Reece Early and Bleece Jordan, Betsy Threatt’s well-worn vocabulary will be proudly received by Betty Kern, Clifton Allen passes on his curly locks to Janice Kern, B. J. Maness bequeaths his ability to just star-gaze to Janie Davis. To Billie Callicutt goes Alvin Wright’s giggles so she will be well supplied. Vera McKinnon leaves her well-worn books to Annie F, Rayle and Carl Hanlon, Clinton Davis leaves his ‘‘hot-rod’’® to Smith Junk Yard, %C. W. Graves. We do hereby constitute and appoint Mrs, Shamburger, our class advisor, sole executor of this our last will and testament. In testimony whereof, we the Class of 1953 have to this our last will set our hands and seal on this fourteenth day of May, in the year of our Lord, nineteen hundred and fifty-three.
