BASKETBALL Star City High School's basketball team of 1945-46 under the coaching of D. P. Surber, did not have a very successful season. The team did fairly well considering the competition and the scores of the games lost. The team, winning only 6 out of 19 games for 32W, which isn't very good, played some very good games, for of the 13 games lost, 6 Were lost by 3 or less points. Also the Stars won the Invitational Tourney at Kewanna, December 29. The Starlets won 10 out of 17 games, for 59W. The Starlets were the runner ups in the County Tourney, but lost out to Pulaski in the finals. There seems to be some very good talent in the ranks of the Starlets to fill the vacancies of the graduat- ing seniors on the first team. In the Invitational Tourney, the Stars defeated Monterey in the opening session of the afternoon of December 29 by a score of 32-24. Kewanna won over Grass Creek in the next session to win the right to appear in the finals against the Stars. The game was close all the way rand the Stars eked out the game in the final minutes of play. January 16, was the County Tourney at Monterey where the Stars weren't as fortunate as they were in the Invitational, for they bowed to the Pulaski five in the opening game. Star City's second team showed better by defeating Francesville 17-15 in their first game but fell short in their final game against Pulaski as they were defeated 11-27. In the Sectional Tourney February 22, the Stars fell behind the highly regarded Akron team to lose the first game 26-32. The Has-beens defeated the WillJbees 4-1 to 25 in a fast and well played game on March 20 to end the Basketball season. The seniors led all the way with scoring honors by Burgess, Hoesel, and Daily for the victors and Groom for the Under Dogs. Seniors: Daily 12. Hoesel 11, Burgess 14, Gralffis 7, Allen, and Hood. VVill-bees: Groom S, Parcel 6, Hettinger 3, Batty 3, Carpenter 2, Smith 1, Schultz 2, and Berkshire.
