Our pilot was Julia Phillips and our passengers were Dean Allen, Beverly Dickson, Marilyn Durbin, George Eddington, Arnold Foust, Ronald Foust tour twinsl, Letitia Harris, Darl Hettinger, Neil Hoesel, Martha Johnson, Worley Jones, Corabelle Kistler, Delight Moon, Virginia Murphy, Harold Ruff, Margery Ruff, Edith Shelhart, Walter Smith, and Lucile Thomas. But before too long, one of our passengers, Worley Jones got sick and had to parachute out near the city's best doctor's office. We then landed at Moyer's Station and let off Edith Shelhart. and picked up two new passengers, Lawrence Rude and Olive Hauser. We were near the end of the first run in our trip but everyone was eager to continue the trip, tsilly peoplej. Before too much time had elapsed, we were ready to start on the second part of our journey with Maude Buck and Alma Wirick as our pilots. This was 1935, and though we waited as long as we were allowed to, Olive Hauser and Walter Smith fail- ed to reach the airport in time. But as we checked over the passenger list we found that our new passengers Included: Dorothy Baldwin, Donald Hedger, Bernard Nies, Betty Wagner, and Dale Sadill-a. At our next stop, George Eddington Hlld Lucille Thomas got off the plane, but just as the plane was ready to start, Bernard Nies woke up and realized that he was to get off here so we lost another passenger. At our next stop we had a very delayed vacation. The vacation passed before we knew it and we were ready for our trip to con- tinue. This was in the fall of 1936, and we found that we had the same pilots as we had the previous trip thow they stood us two years we'll never knowl. There was an addition to our list of passengers and they included: John Epler, Beverly Korner, Doris Begthel and Hazel Frazier. As we studied the list we realized that we had lost several passengers. Those who did not board the plane were: Victor Day, Arnold Foust. Ronald Foust tour twinsl, and Betty Warner. After we had traveled quite a ways, Beverly and Kenneth Colby, Wayne Davis, Darl Hettinger, and Doris Begthel decided to get off at the next stop. lt was quite an exciting trip, this run, but we made it. The day was quite dark and dreary on this day in 1937 but we decided to start on the fourth run, no niatter what the weather. Our pilots were Maude Buck and Clara Noel and the passengers on this trip were a little tired but the addition of a few new passengers added interest. The new passengers were: Gertrude Bucks, Wanda Bon- nell, Viola Scott, and a new pair of twins, Betty and Bob Kelly. But as we left we saw Dorothy Baldwin, Beverly Korner, and Virginia Murphy running out on the airfield but they were too late so we lost those passengers on this trip. We landed at Moyer's Station and let Gertrude Bucks, Lois Ewing, Donald Hedger, Corabelle Kistler off. By this tiine we were pretty tired of traveling so we set the plane down for a needed l'9St. lt was our fifth run and we were still getting new passengers. Yes, this was 1938. Our pilot was Mrs. D9IlSb0l'Il and we were ready to take off. The new passengers were: Bob Berkshire, Miles Hettinger, Duane Rassmussen, Bobby Russell, Frank Herald, and Monna Lou Vanscoyk. Looking around we failed to see VVanda Bonnell and Lawrence Rude on this part of our journey. We were getting to the halfway mark on our journey and there wasn't anyone who wanted to get off so we traveled right along and then set the plane down and took our vaaction between runs, but it wasn't long before it would be time to leave again. All aboard!!! we are now ready for our sixth trip and our halfway mark will be reached. Mrs. Densborn is our pilot for this part of our trip. To our surprise, Beverly Dickson and Harold Ruff failed to make it to the airport in time to get aboard the plane, but we got several new passengers to make up for the loss of those two. The new passengers were: Imogene Scott, Wanda Foreman, and another pair of twins. Dan and Joe Royer. But they didn't stay on the plane long for the twins. Frank Hearld, Duane Rassrnussen, and Monna Lou Vanscoyk got off at the next stop, which happened to be between THE NEW SCHOOL BUILDING and GRADUATION. But it wasn't long before this part of our trip was over. My! how time flies! This is 1941 already. This trip is really interesting. We have a new pilot, Mr. Surber, and our co-pilot is Mrs. Fisher. This trip we have our first crew, it includes: Mr. Carpenter, Mrs. Snyder, Miss Thompson, Mr. Hyman, and Miss Clausen. We flew South this time and at Thornhope we picked up Ruthalea Batty, Darl Daily, Kathryn Fisher, Don Graffis, Roger Seward, Alberta Jones, Arthur Lind, Gus Mangold, and Clara Smith. The plane waited a few minutes overtime and Jea'nnee Quinn and Jane Crissinger came running to the plane just in time to get in their seats before the plane took off. At our next stop, Clara Smith and Jane Crissinger got off, so the plane wasn't nearly as crowded as we thought it would be. We were glad that this part of our trip was over but we were all looking forward to the next part of our trip. September of 1942: what a year to be alive!!! The passengers were very full of energy so we put ourselvs to work and-guess what we did?'??? 'l'hat's right, we painted our plane a very vivid green. When all the work was done we took off on a very remarkable trip. We got down our charts and at last found our way to the big airport, Fairview. We picked up Lyle Burgess fthat's where he came froml, Arlean Grostefon, Cecil Hood, Mary Kasten, Doris Kistler, and Gene Williams. We continued for several miles and then stopped to pick up Paul Widup, Rowena Sterner, and Eileen Hollis. We had traveled quite a long ways so we decided to rest up for the next part of our interesting journey. OOPS! I just about forgot!!! Our pilot was Mr. Surber, and Mrs. Fis-her was again our co-pilot. Our crew was about the same, it consisted of one new member, Mrs. Mitchell. It was a bright, sunshiny day, that day in 1943, when we zoomed into the blue for the tenth part of our trip. Mr. Surber was still our pilot, and our co-pilot was Mr. Walter. Our crew consisted of: Mrs. Slaybaugh, Mrs. Patterson, Mrs. Carpenter and Mr. Car- penter, yes, we had quite a few changes in our crew but we didn't complain. tWe couldn't, could we?J There a few new members who joined our passengers on this trip, they included: Hlrbert Montgomery, Eddie Russell, Eugene Ingrim and Eddie Pollen. We landed at a 'new airport and when we stopped we left a lot of our pas- sengers who were destined to end their trip on a different airline. These passengers were: Hubert Montgomery, Gene Williams, Paul Widup, Rowena Sterner, Gus Mangold, Martha Johnson, Eugene Ingram and Bo-b Berkshire. We were ending the tenth part of our trip and were eagerly looking forward to the good times we would have on our next run. The date was September 3, 1944, and we were Juniors!!! We really had to cele- brate this occasion, and we did, the whole time we were on the trip, but it was plenty of work-getting ready for the celebrating, I mean. Our pilot this trip was Mr. Surber, as the year before, and our crew was as follows: Mr. Carpenter, as co-pilot, and Mrs. Salions, Mrs. Carpenter, Mrs. Stoudt, and Mrs. Moyer. Glarncing through the passenger list, we found that there were only two new passengers on this trip, they were Olive Peters, and Walter Perry. This trip was too interesting for anyone to bail out, or to stop off at some destination so we all stayed on the plane and had a swell trip. Around rolled 1945, which seemed only a short time since we had started our jour- ney. With Mr. Surber as our pilot, and Mr. Carpenter as our co-pilot and Mrs. Car- penter, Mrs. Servies, Mrs. Moyer, and Mrs. Stlalions as our crew. About half-way through the trip Mrs. Moyer bailed out and Miss Thompson got on at our next stop. All our old passengers were on for the rest of the trip except Eddie Polen. He must have missed the plane because of some last minute excitement. Those passengers who successfully reached their destination were as follows: Dean Allen, Ruthalea Batty, Lyle Burgess, Jane Crissinger, Darl Daily, Arlean Grostefon, Hazel Frazier, Don Graf- fis, Kate Fisher, Mary Kasten, Cecil Hood, Eileen Hollis, Neil Hoesel, W-alter Perry, Olive Peters, Delight Moon, Doris Kistler, Imogene Scott, Viola Scott, Roger Seward, Margery Ruff, and Jeannee Quinn. But we all give three cheers for those who flew with us all twelve runs of our trip, they were: Dean Allen, Neil Hoesel, Margery Ruff and Delight Moon. Our trip was through, and where we will all go from here is yet to be written in history. Let's hope that the next twelve years will be as happy and as worthwhile as the last twelve. ,., A.,-fr -, A 1 'lf'-QQ ,A , '. 41 'p ,' H' w ' v. The student-council meetings were something new this year in which all the teachers and the officers of the four upper classes took aan interest. The main ob- ject of these 'meetings was to plan the school activities so that two classes would not be conflicting on party dates, the use of the gy-m, etc. The ffirst meeting was on October 19, 1945 and the main discussion was how to choose the basketball boys that should go to the state finals in the spring. A com- mittee was chosen to make-up the rules cfor the boys to abide by during the year and to be scored at the end of the season. This committee consisted of: Mr. Carpenter, Neil Hoesel, Kathryn Fisher, Mrs. Servies, and Jack Capper. A committee was also appointed to choose the boys, they were: Harold Brown, Ralph Bishop, Mrs. Servies, Mrs. Moyer, Joe Bill Newman, Kenneth Kistler, and Kathryn Fisher. A school Christmas party was the next thing to plan. It was decided to have it on December 20 at the school gymnasiwm. The upper six grades were included in this party. The secretaries of the classes were on the decorating committeeg vice presi- dents on the refreshments, and the presidents on the entertainment. Every class had their own gi-ft exchange. Throughout the year minor dates have been voted ony the Sunshine dance, Sopho- more skating party, stunts for Farmer's Ilnstitute, etc. Everyone feels that these meetings have been a help to the whole student body in avoiding conflicts and hopes that they continue in years to come. Several meetings were held in the library for any of the high school girls who wished to attend, to try to get the idea across, and to see just how many would like to have a Sunshine Society. The idea seemed like a good one so with the help of the Winamac Sunshine girls, the Star City Sunshine Society was organized. Officers were elected immediately and are as follows: Doris Kistler, President: Wanda Bonnell, Vice President, Elaine Perry, recording secretaryg Yvonna Fisher. corresponding secretary: Joan Bauman, treasu1'er. An initiation program was held at the Methodist church with a beautiful candle light service on November 28, 1945. Meetings were held on the first Wednesday of each month, and books were reviewed and business was discussed. In the December meeting, the idea of decorating the high school rooms was brought before the girls. So the work began, and all rooms in the high school were decorated in the bright, gay colors of Christmas. Everyone appreciated the Christmas spirit which the decorations brought forth. In the January meeting the idea to have a Sweetheart Dance was advanced and approved, the time being set for February 13, 1946. The girls worked industriously deco' rating the gymnasium accenting Valentine Day. The dance was formal, and the girls invited their escorts. The party was a great success and the boys all thought they should have another as long as they did not have to help with the decorating. At the February meeting, the idea was discussed of having a spring carnival to raise funds for the Society. Everyone agreed and the idea was started upon at once. Soon the carnival became a reality. So on March 22, 1946, the high school gym was a scene of the Sunshine Carnival. -Jeannee Lou Quinn. !-2 V -vt: I x s 'F , 'sg ' .. N A U - 'f has 'J' A -4, 1 'K 12 Q qui? ' ,A A 'SWR'-'. Surber, did not have a very successful season. The team did fairly well considering the competition and the scores of the games lost. The team, winning only 6 out of 19 games for 32W, which isn't very good, played some very good games, for of the 13 games lost, 6 Were lost by 3 or less points. Also the Stars won the Invitational Tourney at Kewanna, December 29. The Starlets won 10 out of 17 games, for 59W. The Starlets were the runner ups in the County Tourney, but lost out to Pulaski in the finals. There seems to be some very good talent in the ranks of the Starlets to fill the vacancies of the graduat- ing seniors on the first team. In the Invitational Tourney, the Stars defeated Monterey in the opening session of the afternoon of December 29 by a score of 32-24. Kewanna won over Grass Creek in the next session to win the right to appear in the finals against the Stars. The game was close all the way rand the Stars eked out the game in the final minutes of play. January 16, was the County Tourney at Monterey where the Stars weren't as fortunate as they were in the Invitational, for they bowed to the Pulaski five in the opening game. Star City's second team showed better by defeating Francesville 17-15 in their first game but fell short in their final game against Pulaski as they were defeated 11-27. In the Sectional Tourney February 22, the Stars fell behind the highly regarded Akron team to lose the first game 26-32. The Has-beens defeated the WillJbees 4-1 to 25 in a fast and well played game on March 20 to end the Basketball season. The seniors led all the way with scoring honors by Burgess, Hoesel, and Daily for the victors and Groom for the Under Dogs. Seniors: Daily 12. Hoesel 11, Burgess 14, Gralffis 7, Allen, and Hood.
