SPORTS Coach Dwight Surber has piloted the Star City High School basketball team through a very successful season considering the competition against whom the boys played. 1fVinniug 14 games and losing 7 for an average of 67 94, for the season is a record many teams would like to have. The Stars won the Invitational Tournament, held in our gymnasium Decem- ber 30, 1944. This is the first time Star City has won the tournament. In the first game, the Stars defeated a very strong Monterey quintet by a score of 27 to 17. This advanced the Stars into the finals where they turned on the heat to defeat Grass Creek 31 to 21 for the crown. In the County Tourney which also was held in our gym, the Stars were de- feated in their first game. It was a hard-fought game in which our boys were stone cold and had to overcome a 15 to 3 lead, obtained by Medaryville in the first quarter, in order to win. The Stars fell short, however, and the final score was 22 to 21, Me' daryville. The Starlets made the grade by defeating a strong Pulaski five 2-1 to 13 and then an undefeated Medaryville five 21 to 15. This makes the third consecutive year that the Starlets have been crowned County Champs. In the sectional tournament, the Stars entered their first game against a fight- ing Fulton crew and by playing nifty ball came -out on the long end of a 2-t to 23 score. Saying, Why stop now? , the Stars bowled over the favored Akron team in their second game by a score of 35 to 32. That game upset all dope -buckets for Akron was considered by all as the Sectional dark horse . The tired Stars then advanced into Semi-finals against the fresh Grass Creek quintet but couldn't find the range and bowed to a 24 to 19 defeat.
