Basketball is the only major sport that orig- inated in America. It was devised in l89l by Dr. Naismith, a director of physical education of Springfield College, Springfield, Mass. During its first year basketball spread to all parts of our country. In its second year the French and Chinese started playing it. Today it is played in all countries. Proof of basketballYs universal acceptance lies in the fact that during the l956 Berlin Oly- mpies, it was played for the first time. Twenty nations ,were represented. The final game was be- tween the United Statesand Canada, the former win- ning l9-8. The first games were played with any number of players, from three to fiftyg however, 9 play- ers were preferred. Whenever forty or morewsre on a team two balls were used instead of one. Basketball kept growing in leaps and bounds, being played by men, women, boys and girls. It was played in the Y, M. C, AYs recreation centers and schools, especially the smaller schools, as very little equipment and expense was required. Great intorst in basketball has always been shown in our state, especially in the small con- solidated high schools. It is only natural that Indiana has become the center of high school basketball. During the last few years we have had almost 20,000 spectators watching our championship game in our final state tourney, This year in our sch- eduled game it was estimated?that there were 8,000 to witness the battle.
