Seniors: It seems such a short tirw ago that I first met you as a freshmen in the Star City school, There were several others that year who are today not enjoying the activities ofyour closing days of high school, Perhaps you sometimes feel as if you would rather be in their places, and they probably would like to be in yours, It may or may not have been within their control to have continued in school. You may or nay not have had a choice in your being able to become a graduate, Semetines it seems we are pushed about in the crowd with little or no choice in our destination, To this thesis I can not subscribe. You, the seniors are graduating because you have hadride- sire to graduate. Yes, I know some say they wish they could have quit but would not because father, mother or a friend would notset then. Consequent- ly, you have made some decisions afterconsiderable thought and receiving of advice that have brought you to one ofthe highest places of distinction at- tainable in this com unity. You have had within you an ever-present urge to overcome new problems, the solving of vhich led to another upward step, You are new a little higher on your ladder cflife, This ladder of life has a board base. During the year, Anna Mae Rater and Gerald Bonnell came her. Since then, Anna .Hae Rater moved to Winamac, Gerald Bonnell withdrew, Martha Bucks moved to Pulaske, and Helen Poole moved to Francesville. We had twenty eight students en- rolled at the close of school. We were proud of our contestants this year. ln the Latin contest were Louise McClain and Pattvthin- . 1 ple, and those in the geometry contest were Marie McLochlin and Colonel Vangundy. The Latin contest- ants did fairly well, but we havenYt heard about the geometry contest winners. Several Sophomore students were disappointed because they were not getting along so well in Latin and geometryo Majbe if they would each have gotten daily assignments, things would not have been so bad for them. We were proud of the effort our boys put forth this year on the b.nket ball team. Dick Compton, Don Marquis, Colonel Vangundy,. and Dean Parcel all deserved credit for doing their part. Our Christmas party was held at Bernice Moon's house this year. This was the second time our class had a Christmas party at her houseo Mb played games, ate candy, roasted weiners, and exchanged gifts. We had a very lovely time. It seemed as if romance had come into the minds of several people in this classn If you donlt know whom, you should have taken a look around in the halls end ycu'd soon have found out. Our class officers were: President-W-Kenneth Hoodg vice-president-Stanley Lemmon, Secretary-mMary Kelley, treasurer-Dick Compton, They did a-very good job transacting the business of the Sophomnres. Our class sponsor was Mr. Reed. We wish to thank him for his help. Marie McLochlin, Crval surgcss and Louise Mc- Clain took part in the Farmerfs Institute program held on the evening of February 5. Basketball is the only major sport that orig- inated in America. It was devised in l89l by Dr. Naismith, a director of physical education of Springfield College, Springfield, Mass. During its first year basketball spread to all parts of our country. In its second year the French and Chinese started playing it. Today it is played in all countries. Proof of basketballYs universal acceptance lies in the fact that during the l956 Berlin Oly- mpies, it was played for the first time. Twenty nations ,were represented. The final game was be- tween the United Statesand Canada, the former win- ning l9-8. The first games were played with any number of players, from three to fiftyg however, 9 play- ers were preferred. Whenever forty or morewsre on a team two balls were used instead of one. Basketball kept growing in leaps and bounds, being played by men, women, boys and girls. It was played in the Y, M. C, AYs recreation centers and schools, especially the smaller schools, as very little equipment and expense was required. Great intorst in basketball has always been shown in our state, especially in the small con- solidated high schools. It is only natural that Indiana has become the center of high school basketball. During the last few years we have had almost 20,000 spectators watching our championship game in our final state tourney, This year in our sch- eduled game it was estimated?that there were 8,000 to witness the battle. 'fflzgz 55221 4 ' l E3 Last gear approximately 8,000,000 people played basketball in America. There were more oaid admissions to basketball J. genes than to any other sport. In our state we have about 900 high schools-- a small percentage have football teams, but every- one has a basketball team. 9855 of all high schools have varsity basket- ball teams. Approximately 48? of all high scheel students participate in interclass and varsity competition. Basketball is only fifty years old. During the earliest games there was no center jump--the referee threw the ball fron out of bound to the center of the floor. Geal: at one time counted three paints. In the early daft if a player committed one or nero fouls during four consecutive games, he was barred for the season. The greatest known number ef field goals made by one individunl in :nj one game was E5,scered by E. Lowery, ex-Purdue star. Jack Cray scored over l,000 points during his playing career, with Texas University. The world's talleettrsketball team was coach- ed by Al Baggett, one Feat Texas State College.
