The Senior Class FGREWORD It is with the hope of leaving one lasting achievement after four enjoyable years in high school that we, the Senior Class of 1940, publish this glamorous Twinkler. On these pages we have endeavored to portray, both pic- torially and editorially, the daily student life within the walls of our little red school building. In years to come, after the installation of a more mod- ern scholastic institution, we hope that this book may serve as a reminder of earnest endeavor under limited circumstanc- es, and as an inspiration to those who have greater opportun- ities for education. vX QLD 32' iifai ' ,l JZ., 1 .f XZFIIX2 A F!! ,Z , g-.-l 5? -7,-,,,,, XX aff f- fff? We believe that we have done our duty in upholding our place among our predecessors in the fields of music, sports, dramatics, and scholastic enterprises. we first made a bid for public recognition in our sophomore year, when we won the class basketball tournament from the seniors in the final few seconds of play. Our basketball prestige among the other classes has never since been questioned. In our Junior year, the class successfully presented the play, 'My Wife's Family'. The class also sponsored a series of four lyceum programs which were graciously accepted by the school and community. Then in the spring we entertained the seniors in a gala Junior-Senior Banquet, held at the Barnes Hotel at Logansport. The banquet was followed by A theater party at the Logan Theater. This year has been the greatest and most enjoyable one in our high school career. This year when the softball season rolled around, the sen- ior boys on the team did their best for Star City High, however the Stars were defeated by the tournament champions on the narrow margin of one run. At the close of the softball season, Coach Reed called the first basketball practice, and among those turning out were the five senior veterans who be- came the starting crew for the Stars in nearly all of their encounters. The boys were successful in again winning the Pulaski County Basketball Tournament, and the trophy thus won is now in the school collection. In the spring of our senior year, we presented the play, 'Don't Look Hown, much to the approval of the audience which filled the auditoriu . 5 HAROLD MURPHY Baseball Jun1or Play Sen1or Play School Paper Band Orchestra Glee Club Boys' Quartette HILDA MITCHELL Jun1or Play S6H1OF Play Band Orchestra School Paper Glee Club BURL BONNELL Basketball Baseball Jun1OT Play SBH1OF Play MARGARET RAFFERTY School Paper JUDIOT Play Senlor Play Glee Club THOMAS DENSBORN Basketball Senior Play Gleo Club 25? Mary Jones, Jeannetta Nice, Betty Darland, and Walter Haus- er joined our ranks. Here we were greeted by Grace Densborn and Dorothy Surber as our commanders. We left Freddie Eartle, LaVerne Liming and Har- old Foust, who spent another year there. At the beginning of our third year of school training we found several new students waiting to join our ranks. They were T. J. Black, Maria Dean, Stella Clements, Esther Jump, Wilbur Scott, Mary Helen Smith, Eva Kline and Neil Herrick. Again some were left behind. They were: Alfred Gellinger, Calvin Jones, and Eva Kline. At the beginning of our fourth year we found that we were unfit for battleg our ranks had dropped to twenty-one. But during the year we gained Priscilla Shipley and Mary McQuiere. When we entered the fifth grade, Mrs. Maude Buck greeted us. Billy Figley, Harry Thomas, and Glenn Purkey joined us there. Still with Mrs. Buck, we met several new students in the sixth grade. They were Mae McClain, Sylvia Hedger, and Richard Raub. we left behind, Paul Bauman and Harry Thomas. Our great move was yet to be taken. We climbed the steps to where we met Mr. Surber, Mr. Byfield, Mr. Huffman, Mr. Jeffery, Miss Esther Geier, Miss Harrison, and Miss Lillian Geier. we gained Bonita Davis to our class roll. On our return to school the next year we found that we had lost Bonita Davis, Agnes Fox, Don Hinshaw, Dorothy, Harry, and Zela Thomas, Seth White, and Pricilla Shipley. We started in as freshmen with several students from both Fairview and Thornhope schools. We began with Hazel Adams, Paul Bauman, Alice Bonnell, Burl Bonnell, Gerald Bonnell, Pauline Bonnell, Leroy DeArmond, Tom Dens- born, Don Fahler, William Flegal, Herbert Galbreath, Wilma Good, William Green, Junior Gunter, Sylvia Hedger, Ivan Haselby, Harold Knebel, Bob Kor- ner, Mae McClain, Hilda Mitchell, Mabel Moon, Harold Murphy, Margaret Rafferty, Dick Raub, Harold Rude, Mary Helen Smith, Delores Stites, Earl Sutton, and Madeline Malia. During the year we lost Hazil Adams, William Flegal, Junior Gunter, Sylvia Hedger, Delores Stites, and Earl Sutton. In our Freshman year the faculty was composed of D. P. Surber, Mrs. Myrtle Valentine, Ewing Hazlett, Miss Lillian Geier, Miss Lois Eldridge, Lloyd Carpenter, and Charles L. Byfield. In the sophomore year we lost Gerald Bonnell, Harrietta Hastings, Har- old Rude, and Paul Bauman, however we gained Rosetta Malia. It was during this year that we first came into the school spotlite. This was achieved when five boys from our class won the class basketball tournament. The faculty was changed this year with the coming of Miss Vera Peigh in place of Mrs. Valentine, and also the arrival of Donovan Jacoby to act as coach. In the junior year we lost Madeline and Rosetta Malia. In November of this year, we presented the three act comedy, nMy Wife's Familyn, which met with the approval of the huge audience that filled the auditorium. This year the faculty was again revised when Miss Mary Boegaholtz replaced Miss Lillian Geier, Gale Metzger replaced Miss Eldridge, and Miss Jean Imel was added to the present faculty. Our senior year.has been our most enjoyable year of all. Our graduat- ing class is as follows: Alice Bonnell, Burl Bonnell, Pauline Bonnell, Leroy Dearmond, Thomas Densborn, Don Fahler, Wilma Good, Herbert Galbreath, Ivan Haselby, Harold Knebel, Bob Korner, Mae McClain, Hilda Mitchell, Mabel Moon, Harold Murphy, Dick Raub, Margaret Rafferty, Mary Helen Smith, and Mabel Vanscoyk. In April of this year our class presented the play, 'Don't Look Now'. The faculty was changed this year when N. Ray Reed replaced Donovan Jacoby, and Mrs. Marjorie Boomershine replaced Miss Boegaholtz. 8 'I 'wr' We many o that yo I, CLASS WILL , The Senior Class of 1940, will and bequeath to the lower classmen f our accomplishments, habits, and possessions with the admonition u make good use of them. Senior Class Poem The end has come, as come it must To all thingsg in sweet April days The teacher and the scholar trust Their parting feet to separate ways They party but in the years to be Shall pleasant memories cling to each As shells bear inland from the sea The murmur of the rhythmic beach So shall the stream of time flow by And leave each year a richer good, And learned lovliness outvie, The nameless charm of soholarhood And, when the world shall With gracious lines and link your nam e manners fine, The teacher shall assert her claims, Lnd proudly whisper, 'They were mine L' 9 CLASS PROPHECY It was a cold, bleak December night when I sat looking out of our liv- ing room window watching the soft white snow flakes hastily making their way to the ground. When suddenly, the snow flakes melted into view a warm and cozy cottage near Thornhope. There sat Don Fahler, who is now an aged bachelor and mayor of Thornhope. From here, I saw into the office of Robert Korner, who followed his life's ambition to become a dentist. There in his office in New York, he is working on a set of false teeth for Mrs. KornerfMrs. Korner was formerly Margaret Raffertyj. Margaret's teeth were knocked out as a result of one of their many and fam us fights. Ah! The interior of a church, where an organ is softly playing, 'I Promise Youn. Here comes Harold Knebel and Hilda Mitchell marching up to the altar to take the vows that will forever bind those two hearts as one. I then beheld the soft rippling waters of Florida. On looking up I saw posed a young auburn haired girl ready to dive. It is our former classm te Mae McClain, who is now the champion girl-diver of the United States. Then a great explosionlll looked and saw a great factory with the neon lights announcing to all that it was Raub's Scientific Laboratory. That explosion was just one of Dick's atoms that got loose. We always knew that Dick would be a great scientist some day. In a large courtroom at Reno, gavel in hand, D. P. Surber, formerly my principal at Star City High School, is granting a divorce to a young cou- ple. The couple I recognized as Leroy Dearmond and Mabel Vanscoyk. He told the judge that she had been running around with other men. I now perceived Alice Bonnell standing before a microphone. What is she doing? Why, she is giving her hour of recipes on the 'Cook awhile Hour'. In the background are her cooksg they happen to be her two smiling daughters, Alvina and Margaret, who mix the ingredients as she mentions them. Do you think their husbands will have to slip the biscuits under the table to Spotty after all of this experience? Well I hope not, but I shouldn't be surprised. Mary Helen Smith had a very hard time, it seems, deciding between a career or a marriage. So she, after much debating, chose to be a beauty parlor operator. As you all remember, Mary Helen always was a beautician. The next sight to meet my eyes was that of a school room, and at the desk, ruler in hand, sits a very young teacherg it is Wilma Good. Wilma, it seams, has forgotten all about school days, for she is sending a small child up to the office, and as the office door opens, do you know who the principal is? None other than Mr. Thomas Densborn. There is Burl Bonnell, knocking on doors. He is selling toothpicks that won't break or bend and he is really convincing the people. When he flashes that smile, the women will buy almost anything from him. In large horned rimmed glasses, I see Harold Murphy taking a course at The College of Bugology. Harold always said, 'Thu bs down on being a teachern, but he must have changed his mind, for he surely is working hard for his diploma. The clicking of a typewriter attracted m attention so I looked hast- ily, and saw a familiar face. Who was it? Why, it was Pauline Bonnell, and her employer is Herbert Galbreath. You know the old saying,'She Mar- ried Her Bossn, but will she? Only a few more months at work will tell. Mabel Moon runs a sm ll knick-knack and candy shop. Someone walks in and Mabel chases the large yellow angora cat out of the candy case, long enough to sell the candy. Thinking of the destination of m classmates, I compared their sit- uation with that of my own. I am now coaching the Star City basketball team, and we have just won the hardest game of the season easily, and, for an instant the vision returned and showed us playing in the sectional ------ but the snow has started heavier and my vision is completely blinded by it. In the county softball tournament, the Stars were beaten in the first game by a strong Medaryville team, who went on to win the tournament. The softball team will lose four players by the graduation route, who are as follows: Burl Bonnell, Harold Murphy, Leroy DeArmond and Bob Korner In basketball the Stars were far more successful, winning fourteen out of twenty-two games In the blind tournament, held at Monterey, the Stars succeeded in reaching the finals by defeating a strong Monterey team Grass Creek defeated a hard fighting Kewanna quintet to advance to the finals However the competition proved to be too tough for the Stars and when the battle was over the Creeks were out in front eight points In the annual Pulaski County Basketball Tournament, held in the new Francesville gymnasium, the Stars proved to have just a little more class than the rest of the quintets in this county The Stars advanced to the finals by defeating a stubborn Pulaski team in a very close and fast conflict In the final and deciding game of the tournament the Stars bucked up against a seasoned Medaryville team The game was fast from start to finish with neither team leading over four points at any one time When the smoke of battle had finally cleared away, however the score was four points in favor of Star City At the close of this conflict, the trophy was presented to Captain Korner by Don L Crise In the second team tournament the Starlets were not quite as success- ful as were the Stars They advanced to the final game by defeating a strong Monterey team and a determined Francesville five, only to meet with defeat at the hands of the Medaryville reserve squad 1939-40 Fr1 Fr Fri Wed rri Fr Wed Fri Wed Fri Tues Fri Fri Wed Fr Wed Fri Mon Hon Sat Sat Nov Nov Nov Nov ec ec Dec Dee Deo Jan Jan Jan Feb Feb Feb Feb Feb Jan Jan Jan Jan Star SStar Star Star Star Star Star Star Star Star Star Star Star Star Star Star BASKETBALL SCH DULE City City City City City City City City City City City City City City City City Star City There Here Here There There There Here Here Here There Here There There There There Here There INVITATIONAL TOURNAMENT Star City 50 Star clty 14 COUNTY Star City 27 Star City 25 TOURNAMENT Kewanna Medaryville Franoesville Onward Grass Creek loyal Center Twelve Mile Monterey Pulaski Lucerne Kewanna Monterey Medaryville Rockfield Pulaski Young America Franoesville Monterey Grass Creek Pulaski Medaryville '. . 3 28 .... . . . . . i. . 10 ' 29 .... . . . .
