Alfred G. Gorski Famous Photographer Student 9 You can't go back home to your family, to your childhood Back home to romantic love, to a young man's dream of glory and fame, Back home to the ivory tower, and places in the country away from all the strife and conflict of the World, Back home to the father you have lost and have been looking for, Back home to someone who can help you, save you, ease the burden for you, Back home to the old forms of the systems and things which once seemed everlasting but which are changing all the time. They were judged tops in the Connecticut State Drama Fes- tival competition for so many years, that the Players voluntarily withdrew from this competition for a year or two. lt's open to all high school groups in the state desiring to enter. Several years ago, the Players won the top award in competition among high school drama groups along the eastern seaboard and that same year won recogni- tion for skillful production of Shakespearean plays. The Players, this year, became the only high school drama group in the United States to win the coveted Moss Hart award twice. The talent and hard work ex- hibited by the Staples Players is a credit to the stu- dents, the school, and director. And recognition of their achievement would not be complete without a word of praise for the hard working behind-the-scenes production crews. Coach Lane Announcing 1972 Co-Captains, Tom Albertson 84 Brian MacDonald. Staples Cross Country Scott Davis Under the coaching of Tom Haugh and the leadership of lim Henderson and Chuck Griffith, the cross-country team ended their season with a 7-5-O record. The varsity team, comprised of lim, Chucky , Scott Davis, Roy Callahan, Bill Gordon, Pete Law and Tom Lo, came in fifth in the counties, putting themselves in the states. Of 18 other schools there, Staples came in in 9th. 58 , .., -..T '+- Roy Callahan .-9--rf si jim Henderson x rx, vu..- Chuck Griffith X s Staples Basketball Team It was an up-and-down year for Coach Brian Kelley's Wreckers, but the final 8-12 record was far better than anyone anticipated in the beginning of the year. Staples constantly pulverized the big ones ffor instance, they knocked Ludlowe from the ranks of the unbeatenl but fell before the easier teams. When the Wreckers employed the freeze against then-undefeated Rippo- wam, the home town crowd went wild over the Most exciting game of the year. Staples also made it to the finals in its own holiday tournament. A small team fexcept for high scoring 6'5 star Bob Ulyl, Staples was content to work for the good shot and scare the bigger teams - and they did. Staples' defense was amongst the best in the league. The Westporters were led by Uly and Birtwell, the only two seniors on the team, and Kirk Combe, Derf Robling, Shane Kennedy, Bill Bellock, Brad Stevens fall juniorsl, and sophomore George Barrett. 60 SHS SHS SHS SHS SHS SHS SHS SHS SHS SHS SHS SHS SHS SHS SHS SHS SHS SHS SHS SHS Kirk Combe 1970-71 BASKETBALL Bassick New Canaan Wilton Roger Ludlowe Darien New Canaan Lee Ridgefield Danbury Stamford Cath Rippowam Brian Mclvlabon Andrew Warde Norwalk Trumbull Greenwich Stamford Danbury Rippowam Brian Mclvlabon 61 E f5 Al Let's Go Staples! l Staples ce l-locke Team The Staples icy hockey team, under the directions of Coach leff Lea and Assistant Coach Bob Holiday, earned for themselves the title of County Champs . , . for the final rec- ord, the team had a 6-1-1 in league play and 10-6-2 overall. ln the states the Staples team showed their dominance over by winning the first round of the tournament. The second round proved to be different. Even though Staples had fought hard they lost to the Hamden Dragons 6-1, ending their chances to becoming champs . Staples Swim Team l'm very proud of the team, said Coach Bruce Gariner of the Staples Swim team. Although many things went wrong as the season came to an end, they kept their heads up. They didn't quit. They are an exemplary group of men and swimmers. At the state meet, Staples swam to two team records . . . the relay team, made up of Bob Knoebel, Bob Anding, jon Ball and Monroe Magruder in the 200 yard medley with a time of 1:48.95 and the team of Dean Swick, lon Ball, Mike Matson and Todd Calish in the 400 yard freestyle relay . . . the time be- ing 3383. The Wreckers were defending champions, but because of difficulties of health and injury, they placed with a disappointing eighth, out of the twenty schools that had competed. The Co-captains of the team were Bob Knoebel and Dean Swick. It should also be noted that the swim team is the only boy team that has a girl manager, Paula Martin, who did a fine job in typing and scorekeepingf' 65' Photos By Billingham Staples' Dirt Dozen Despite a poor 8-4 record, it was a stellar year for the Dirty Dozen, who finished as runners up for the state championship! Stu Gagneux and Rick Sadler also qualified for the state tournament, as Coach Pollackfs grapplers finished third in the Southwest Sectional Tournament at Stamford. Fine playing placed Staples third in the tough Western league . . . While in non league play Staples beat the winner of the Eastern league, New Caanan, in a 46-38 game. In the early part of the season the chances for a good season seemed slim, the girls entering their fifth game with a i-3 record. The Rippowam game proved to be the turning point, Staples squeezing out a 35-33 victory. The rest of the season showed continual improvement, finishing the year with a six game winning streak. Scores also continued to climb, from early season scores in the twenties to later scores -near sixty. This recovery was the outcome of fine coaching, exten- sive practice, and determination. All these factors were mirrored in the success of Staples' strongest tactics, an impenetrable 3-2 defense and a shattering full court press. Post game comments always included You won that game on the press. Scoring also played a vital part. Lead by the consistently fine shooting of Martha Kirchof, averaging 13 points a game, many other players reached the double figures. For the junior Varsity, composed completely of sopho- mores, this was a year to gain experience. Playing against teams of more experienced players they improved enough to win their last three games. 75 1' '----n-.-..-.,., ---..,,,.,, Lon Bigelow Mrss 1 Punshon f WL ini 1 ui-FQ? ggi? if A 2 qv 1, .f 19- E ' 1 .-W n J' 1 Y ,SL 'e . White, Li beral!Conservative, Squarefl-l i pple, Parent!Child. Some of it results from very real differences, in culture and values, in environ- ment, in education, generation and life ex- periences. But most of it is caused by a basic human reaction to anything different or unknown - mistrust. When confronted with the unknown, we feel somehow threatened. We seek out others like ourselves. We form an in-group. Associating only with each other, we reinforce our sameness and their difference. We become more and more known. They become more and more unknown. Until we have created the ultimate alienation - We!They. EMBER FDIC Master Crafts Of Westport, lnc. 1330 Post Road You've experienced some of these aliena- tions, but you're only starting out. And you're better prepared to communicate than any of your predecessors . . . you're more sophis- ticated, more informed, more articulate. Use these advantages. For your own en- lightenment and the enlightenment of man- kind. Talk to someone different. Whether it's a different ethnic group, a different genera- tion, or a different political persuasion. Talk to him. Listen. And think of all the things that made him the way he is. You may find that you understand him. Not necessarily agree with him. But understand him. And that's the beginning of communication. And the begin- ning of the end of alienation.
