More than that, in our heritage from this race, we have been shown a way of life that accents honor, respect for tradition, responsibility, sincerity, humility, and love of country. We, the editors of the Stapleite, have chosen the American Indian as our theme because we feel that we the class of 1958 have tried to achieve, in the past three years in Staples, some of the ideals and standards set for us by these early inhabitants of America. We hope that these standards and ideals of the American Indian will serve as guides for our activities in the future. THOMSON Principal Administrative Assistant TO THE CLASS OF 1958 As each class leaves Staples, I am inclined to characterize each as though it were a single person- ality, for so it seems to principal and teacher alike. The class of 1958 has meant to all of us a tremen- dous sense of responsibility, for yours has been a group of high potential and we as a faculty always worry lest, under, us, you not realize your capacity. As we moved into the second half of the year, I be- gan to feel confident that the challenge had been met and met successfully. To me this is a great satisfac- tion, heightened by the presence of my own son among you. May truth and honesty and kindness and loyalty and courage be said of you always, for these are the translation of your education into the good life. Stanley H. Lorenzen DR. GERHARDT E. The schedule included six class A op- ponents, one class B opponent, and one class C op- ponent. Staples started the season with an inexperi- enced team, but soon through the guidance of head coach Frank Dornfeld and assistants Mike Chappa and Paul Lane, it became a team that was highly re- spected throughout the county. The season getting off to a slow start by defeats at the hands of Roger Ludlowe 13-0 and Norwalk 21-O, was soon reversed when the inspired Staples team de- feated New Canaan 29-O. This inspiration was almost lost when half the team came down with the Asiatic flu before the Bassick game. Due to this fact, Staples suffered another set-back at the hands of Bassick 25-13. The Asiatic flu got to such proportions that the games with Andrew Warde and Greenwich had to be cancelled. Staples then faced Danbury and undefeated Darien, their two toughest opponents of the season. The inspired Staples team, not to be discouraged by the physical setbacks, won a moral victory over Dan- bury even though the score was 21-7. Staples then played its last game against Darien and almost pulled the most surprising upset of the year. Darien had never had more than seven points scored against them in any game. Staples broke this record by scoring 12 points in the first half. In the second half Darien proved to be too powerful for the Wreckers and eked out a score of 25-12. This game ended a season in which Staples scored 61 points as opposed to 104 for the opponents. Top scorers were Co-captain Bill Sullivan, Tony Hartley, and Don Bieling with 12 points apiece. Bill Eichelman, Steve Humphrey, and Pat Gruet had 6 points apiece, while Tucker Taggard kicked five extra points. Twelve football seniors: Co-captain Bill Sullivan, jim Long, Mike Reardon, Trent Smith, john Apple- ton, Bill Szarwak, Chris Nielson, Cy Adler, Larry Ka- naga, Pat Gruet, Bob O'Brien, and Tom Wilson - will graduate this June. At the annual PAL football banquet the major awards went to Co-Captain Bill Sullivan, for the Most Valuable Player, Tom Wilson the Most Outstanding Player, and Bill Szarwak the Most Valuable Reserve -zwmswxiuimfsuwdz c1Uaauum:1r:wcvfn'nrsf f . . f 1 M A Xw4vwfr.r1f-:raw1fwuiv:.n1-QMA:'f:M'ff-,-ww L CHEERZEADERS Starting off with a completely new squad, with the exception of Cathy Boyd and Pat Dor- sey, this year the Staples cheerleaders eventually exhibited the exceptionally fine spirit and talent that has always been a large part of the Staples football and basketball games. The support of the school band and the ardent Staples fans also helped considerably. The seven seniors on the squad were Cathy Boyd, Captain, Pat Dorsey, Faxon Green, Meg Brister, Judy Lambert, Lucy Specht, and Betty Mae Lanute. The five juniors were Cathy Friedman, Joan Ormand, Barbara Bogstahl, Georgi Dean, and Nan Sparks. Miss Virginia E. The Wreckers ended up with a record of 10 wins against ll losses. The Cinderella team made the bot- tom of the C.l.A,C. ratings for the tournament by being awarded the Zlst position. They pulled a big upset by winning their first game against Wilby, ranked 16th, 47-41. The Wreckers drew William Hall of Hartford, ranked 8th, for their next opponent. The Cinderella team pulled about the biggest upset in the State by beating Hall 67-50. ln the quarter finals Staples dropped a tough one to Hartford Public 74-56. Bill Sullivan, Steve Humphrey and Mike Rear- don played excellent ball in the tournament named to the 2nd All Tournament Team. The team was led by its two co-captains Bill Sul- livan and Mike Reardon. Reardon ended up the season with 538 points, Sullivan with 237, and Hum- phrey with 258. Bill Needham and Bob O'Brien filled in the back court with Buddy Frey and Mike Katz seeing plenty of action. Next year's team will look toward upperclassmen Steve Humphrey, a varsity standout, Bill Needham and Buddy Frey, to take over where the Wreckers left off, - both on and off the court. l I 1 A ,Za 'f f Q V, fy,w,.w up M-qw x V 4, , ' R: 'K gmt 1 ,Huy Z , fsqggl., Zi' Wx ' gf RMU - La X A, 'Q ' V 4 X r-Mfr eff 3- I 3 if A X ei' N 5 5 E l GIRLS fl0ClCEY This year the girls hockey team closed out a most suc- cessful season, one in which the undefeated varsity won six games while engaging in two ties. Jack, an all around man, batted .412 and had a perfect pitching record - 2-0. Sopho- more, Dick Galley led the team in batting with .444, while senior Bill Green, a first year man came through in the clutch several times and ended up with a .388 average. The club started the season with two smashing victories over Danbury and Wright Tech. Then they fell into a slump and couldn't get going again until sophomore, Steve Humphrey hurled a brilliant one hitter against New Canaan and enabled the team to gain a 6-O victory. Later, the team picked up by dump- ing Wright Tech, Rodger Ludlowe, Andrew Warde, and New Canaan, but lost to Darien, Greenwich and Norwalk. State meet on Dewitt Creyler Field, Yale, June 1. The Staples thinclads had a very successful season under the guidance of Coach Frank Dornfield and Paul Lane. The thinclads placed well at the state in- door meet and did equally well at the Fairfield in- vitational and the county meet. In their first duel meet with Stamford, Staples was decisively beaten. The determined Stapleites bounced back to whip Ludlowe and Stratford in a triangle meet. In their next meet with Andrew Warde, Staples thumped Warde 75 to 24. Staples went on to defeat Norwalk and Danbury in two very thrilling encounters. In the final Triangle meet with New Canaan and Darien, Staples missed winning by a margin of 4 points. The year 1957 produced many individual stops and also something more important, a great desire to win and team spirit. Two records fell in 57 , John Long broke an 8, year old record in the javelin throw set in 1949 by Charles Curtis who tossed the spear 157' 1 . Long's toss was 164' 9M . The other record that was estab- lished was in the 880 yd relay at the C.I.A.C. meet. The previous record of 1235.0 set by E. Wilson, G. Chappa, E. Samuelson, P. Russell in 1956 was eclipsed in the record breaking time of 1134.9 by E. Wilson, J. Barmmer, W. Koopman. The 1957 season was one of Staples greatest and with many promising and upcoming youngster the 1958 track team should be one to watch. It should be mentioned that Staples will be participating as a class AU school, thus making the competition very stiif. If Staples keeps up its fine team spirit of last year, the team can be assured of a fine season. Al- though last yearls record was rather unimpressive, 6-6-l, the heart of the squad is returning, with the excep- tion of fiery Geoff Reynolds, whose consistently superior playing great- ly aided the squad. Lured away from Staples by the vast athletic resources of private institutions were S. S. Cunningham and Tom Winkopp who seemed certain to have gained their former positions. Pete Wright and Doug Given, seniors and Pete Grossman, Jr. who together form a powerful triumivivate, will return. Although they were carefully kept under wraps last year, Dave Goslee, Mark Hattenbach, and Steve Lef- court will undoubtedly break into this year's starting six. 3. 6'0lF The Staples golf team, coached once again by Mr. Michael Chappa, had a very successful season, win- ning seven, tying one, and suffering only two defeats, both at the hands of Greenwich High School. Starting members of the team were: Captain for the year, Rennie Law, Bob Patterson, Mike Rowland, and Micky Gilbertie. Alternates in- cluded Eddie Karazin, Mike Cun- ningham, Tom Treadwell, Ned She- velson, and john Varley. The team which automatically went to the county conference, also qualified for the state tournament having won more than half of its matches. Although the team did not place high in either tournament, recogni- tion was brought to Staples through the personal performance of Captain Rennie Law, who capped the Indivi- dual County Championship Crown. - - V .' t ' TAPLES ,Q i STAPLES 5 Y' STAPLES P STAPLES lk, arf..
