High standards of personal conduct and strict adher- ence to moral codes were required of knights in the historic days of feudal life. Knights were expected to have reverence for God and belief in the teachings of religion, and to practice honor and courtesy in human relationships. On the theory that one must learn to obey before he can govern, knights had to show loy- alty and respect for authority. Good sportsmanship was a requisite. Knights were also taught to learn humility, and to cultivate generosity and a spirit of charity. ' Before becoming a knight, one had to go through a period of apprenticeship, involving strict training in qualities such as we have described. We in Staples have been apprentices, learning how to accept responsibilities and how to prepare ourselves so that we can master the problems of adult life.
