thlS are that w1thout full em ployment people w1ll be concerned w1th condl t1ons at home and wxll not see any reason for export1ng a lot of goods that we m1ght use at home It took the war to br1ng full employment to the Un1ted States Durmg 1943 w1th a workmg force of 65 000 000 of WhlCh there were about 10000000 1n the armed forces we pro duced S92 000000000 worth of goods and ser v1ces and had a nat1onal 1ncome of S153 O00 000 000 both hgures belng about twxce those of 1939 and almost tW1C6 those of 1929 This IS 1mportant because lt means that 1n order to have full employment after the war Cand we must have 1f we are to ellmlnate povertyj we must peg our productlon level at the 44 level WhlCh ought to be st1ll h1gher than last year And also lt IS lmportant because th1s productlon was brou ht about by the terrlfic governmental ex pend1tures for war and by government control and coord1nat1on of productxon It seems l1kely that Wlth m1l1tary orders cancelled productlon after the war w1ll drop back to the prewar state of unemployment and scarc1ty and that there fore we Wlll have to have government controls and plann1ng although lt w1ll be of a d1lTerent k1nd and for a dlfferent purpose than now and also an extens1ve program of pubhc works pro jects such as publ1c power reforestatlon soxl conservat1on federal housmg schools hospltals H1 etc ready to fill gaps 1n employment It has been Sald that the real cure for un employment IS employment not unemployment benefits As a part of a program of full em ployment we must adopt an extensnve soclal securlty program 1nclud1ng old age benefits larger and longer extended unemployment bene fits a Federal health program and educatxonal serv1ces toward wh1ch the Wagner Murray D1ngle b1ll IS a good start Thus workers w1ll be by a world gov ernment A complete permanent peace can only be achxeved by all natxons glvmg up part of thexr soverelgnty to a world state and then that alone w1ll not completely assure It There must be complete economlc and social freedom all over the world ThlS IS speakmg 1n large terms and over a long perxod of t1me The prospects after the war do not hold for anywhere near as extensxve a program The lmmedlate and foremost need after the war wxll be a world state w1th as much power as possxble and wlth the soverexgnty of each state l1m1ted as much as poss1ble In thxs lme it w1ll be apparent that the spheres of mfluence that the four great powers of the Umted Nations are bulldmg make the Jump easxer from the present to the mternatlonal federal state whrch must be ult1mately our HOUR GLASS As a page in the Westporter Herald , the Hour Glass has been instrumental in keeping the general public informed on school activities. Miss Grace Hastings is faculty advisor. l A SURGICAL DRESSING In accordance with the wartime policy of usefulness, many of the Staples girls joined the new Surgical Dressing Group, under the able direction of Mrs. Jesse Schuyler. This group met every Thurs- day afternoon to make the bandages which are used by the armed forces of this country. Under the supervision of the American Red Cross, these bandages were distributed to the service units where they played a vital part in saving wounded soldiers. bf'- HOME ECONOMICS CLUB The Home Economics Club, super- vised by Mrs. Mabel Werger, this year has been devoting itself entirely to Red Cross Sewing. Some of the articles that have been made are: soft woolen mules for wounded servicemen that are in the hospital, bedside bags, bed jackets, lap robes, bathrobes, fatigue shirts, blouses for children in devastated areas, afghans and quilts. RED CROSS This year the Red Cross Club is divi- ded into four groups who meet on Thurs- day afternoons. The knitting, home nursing, surgical dressings, and sewing groups contribute greatly to the war ef- fort. Mrs. Mabel Werger has sponsored the Red Cross activities. VOCATION AL EDUCATION Many boys and a few girls have been getting basic training in the industrial arts, under the direction of Mr. William Torno. Instruction has been given in wood-working, metal-working, forging, welding, blue-printing and mechanical drawing. E CHORUS The Staples Chorus, directed by Mr. John Ohanian, and accompanied by Patricia Berglund have appeared sev- eral times before school gatherings this year. Their impressive Christmas Pro- gram will be remembered in time to come. Their final appearance of the year was at Commencement. ls! BAND The Staples band, directed by Mr. John Ohanian, performed on many oc- casions on the football field, at assem- blies, and at community affairs. The most enjoyable assemblies of the year were those in which the band partic- ipated. Sheila Miller was the band's drum majorette. THE LISTENING CLUB The Listening Club, under the super- vision of Mrs. Edna Kearns was formed this year so that students interested in music would learn to appreciate and understand operas and various other types of classical music better. Among the members are Emma Treadwell, Mary Killian, Louise Hill, Betty Burtsche, Mary Jane Middlebrook, and Helen Husted. Nj V 'USED' cn' FOOTBALL ' Led by Capt. Henry Coley, and coached by Mr. Francis E. Connolly, the Wreckers', battled through another good grid season winning 4 games, losing 1 and tieing 1. Staples beat the Fairfield High jayvees, 24-0, tied with New Canaan, 0-0, beat Darien, 33-12, then lost to Darien, 6-7, beat New Canaan again, 7-0, and wound up the season by beating Fairfield Prep., 7-0. X1 BOYS' BASKETBALL Led by Captain Louis Dorsey, Coach Francis E. Connolly's basketball pro- teges battled through a tough season which ended in two victories and ten defeats. The Wreckers won from Ridgefield 28-22, and Milford Prep 32-213 lost to Fairfield 11-32, Darien 26-283 New Canaan 32-33, Norwalk 27-353 Fairfield Prep 34-353 Darien 29-355 New Canaan 34-38, Fairfield Prep 29-51, Ridgefield 29-43, and Norwalk 29-39. HOCKEY The Girls' Hockey Team, led by Marilyn McMahon and Dare Bailey, and coached by Mrs. Karen Sniffen, was defeated by the Fairfield lassies in both games-2-1 and 1-0. The team was made up of M. McMahon, D. Bailey, L. O'Connor, E. Salembier, A. Keplesky, E. Thrush, C. Nicholson, B. Graham, E. Lindberg, B. Lauterbach, M. James, B. Schuyler, P. Wassell, M. Salembier, M. Gudzik, J. Walsh, B. Moomau and J. Appleton. GIRLS' BASKETBALL The Staples girls varsity team, led by Captain Marilyn McMahon and coached by Mrs. Karen Sniffen, overwhelmed all opponents to become the first undefeated team Staples has had in quite a while. They defeated Norwalk 37-15 and 41-21g Fairfield 50-24 and 39-12, and New Canaan 48-30 and 49-29. The Jayvees defeated Norwalk 20-18 and 17-55 stopped Fairfield 20-11 in the first game but lost to Fairfield in the second game 18-203 and beat New Canaan 33-30 and 36-24. BOY'S RIFLE CLUB Since transportation was difficult, few matches were scheduled. However many boys learned to shoot expertly under the able direction of Mr. Walter Stevenson. Bob Ulmer was captain. In spite the difficulties of securing bullets, the club, under the direction of Mr. Walter B. Stevenson, made a good record. The members are Ruth Nevins, Leona O'Connor, Doris DeLon, Jane Ellis, Pat Hurley, Barbara Bacon, Louise Brunberg, Jane Lillibridge, Nancy jones, Joyce Walsh, Sally Spencer, Louise Parsell, Gladys Booth, Margaret Remlin, Mildred Acquino, Eve Zwaska, and Louise Renzulli. RIFLE RANGE Although concealed underground in the new building basement, the Staples rifle range is one of the school's busy spots for extra-curricular activity. Here Mr. Walter Stevenson trains a number of boys and girls to become crack rifle shots. In time of war, such training is especially valuable. GIRLS' GYM Every Tuesday the girls' gym classes are put through their paces by Mrs. Karen Sniffen.
