Since the training we get in school is a step by step, year by year process, this year's Round-up has been arranged in a chronological order by grades to bring out t his process. We might compare ourschool years to a ladder. Each grade in school is r.epre- sented by a rung on the ladder. On which rung do you stand? Are you just beginning to climb up the ladder, or are you ready to step off into anothe r part of the world? Those of you in the upper grades may glance back at the first few grades with a note of sadness as you reminisce of the years pastwhen youwere on ladder of education. Those of you on the lower rungs may be ward to the things to come. It is to give you this view that the ROUND-UP has been re It is my hope that the ROUND-UP of 1960 will be one that back on and treasure in the years to come. Since rely, the first rungs of the looking eagerly for- -arranged this year. each of you will look I ,I Editor INDEX Dedication Superintendent's Message Calendar Elementary School Junior High School Courtney School High School Administration and Faculty Organizations Pe rsonalitie s Sports Snapshots Advertising 3 4 5 7 17 27 35 57 65 85 99 123 12.7 During the four years that Mrs. Schwalbe has been at Stanton High, she has taught not only math and Spanish, but lessons in living as Well, Everyone has been inspired by her youthful spirit and zeal. However, her interests are not limited to the classroom, for she has sponsored the junior and senior classes, the Spanish Club, and the annual staff. In appreciation for her inspiration and leadership, we dedicate this book to Mrs. Schwalbe, Congratulations to the Annual Staff and to their sponsor for the Wonderful book they have prepared. It will preserve for us in years to come all the hap- penings of this school year. I hope that this book will show the student body and our patrons the pro- gress we have made in the past. Also I hope the students have caught the spirit of the things which We are trying to put across. Every student has the same opportunity to learn, and it is usually his fault if he fails to get what is being presentedin the classroom. Everyone must be alert at all times and be making an effort to improve his own education. No one canbe responsible for his edu- cation except the individual himself. We should all strive at all times to make good citizens of ourselves for our school, our community, our state, and our nations. High School students are brought by bus into Stanton, but Grades One through Eight will continue to be taught at the Courtney plant. This year, in honor of these classes having become a part of our school system, the Annual Staff has chosen to give the elementary grades and their personalities a separate section in the Roundup. We are very glad to have these boys and girls and We hope that they will enjoy being a part of the Stanton Schools. I- Y l ORGANIZATIQNS Student Council OFFICERS I President- Carl Wright Secretary Dorothy Lawson Vice President Sandra Powell Treasurer Joyce Andersgn The Student Council members of Stanton High School are elected to speak for and to represent the student body. The Council may offer suggestions to help improve the school and to solve real pro- blems in the school. To fulfill this role, the Council works closely with the student body through the elected representatives andwith the administration through the sponsors - Mr. Bickley and Mr. Read. In furthering its aims and objectives, the council sponsors many activities and projects through- out the year. Some of these are informative and entertaining assemblies, Christmas door decorating contest, Career Day, Twirp Week, and innumerable others. These projects take an enormous amount of careful planning by trained student council members. To train these members, the council sends delegates to many meetings and conventions. This year, for the first time, the council sent delegates to the Southern Association of Student Councils convention in Corpus Christi. These delegates were Marilyn Sale, Marsha Bristow, Nancy Johnson, and Joetta Franklin. Delegates also attended the state convention in Amarillo, and the district conventions in Snyder and Midland - where, for the first time, Stanton ran for District office. The council plans to send a delegate to the National Council convention in Janesville, Wisconsin next summer. Stanton High School is fortunate in having one of the most active and useful student councils of any school of comparable size in Texas. The school may justly be proud of such a hardworking, wide awake student council. 66 C LASS REPR ES EN TA TIVES STANDING: Nona Langley, Glen Reid, Glenda Payne, Elida Reyna, Veronica Sorley, and Nancy Johnson. The purposes of this society are to create an enthusiasm for scholar ship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote worthy leadership, and to encourage ther developement of character. Members are chosen by vote of the entire faculty. Membership depends upon high scholarship qualities of leadership, and citizenship. Students elected to this organization must have andmaintain an average of 90 in all subjects with no grade lower than 80 in any one. The numbers elected may be not more than 5 per cent of the sophomore class, 10 per cent of the junior class and 15 percent of the seniors. The eight sided emblem symbolizes the significant purposes of the organization. The name of the organization and the motto are around the border. ln the center is a house supported by two hands, suggesting that the homes of tomorrow are in the hands of its youth. The hand on the right represents the husband, father, or brother in the home. The hand on the left is the wife, mother, or sister. Together the hands signify the importance of cooperation if we are to have strong homes today and a firm foundation for the homes of tomorrow. If it were not for them, the full facilities of the library would not be available to the student body at all hours of the daybecause we do not have a full time librarian. These boys and girls check the books in and out, keep the shelves orderly, keep up with the fines, and assist in mending and classifying the books. This work is a help to the ones who are doing it - they become better acquainted with the books and their authors and with the mechanics of a library. In addition to this, each librarian may earn up to Zelective credits toward graduation - H4 credit each semester. Since a library is such an essential part of a good school, much credit should go to these student librarians and to their sponsor, Mrs. Cage, for keeping it functioning efficiently. She is one of the few students who can make honor grades in academic courses and still be active in numerous extra- curricular activities. These activities have included serving as class secretary for two years, representing her class in the Student Council for the last two years, and holding the office of FHA reporter her sophomore year. She led the FHA as president herjunior year and attended the State Convention when she was a sophomore. She has participated in numerous other acti- vities - cheer leader, sophomore year, Pep Squad secretary, seniorg editor of The Buffalo Heard , senior year, and basketball manager. As a result of her many accomplishments, National Honor Society in her junior year. she was elected to membership in the N One of the busiest people in Stanton High School is Joyce Anderson. Her many variec activities and accomplishments reveal what a wide range of interests she has. Her fellow students selected her as one of their student council representatives her fresh- man and junior years, and as a senior she was chosen treasurer of the council. For the last three years, she has been a hard-working member of the annual staff. This year she was chosen editor. Her interest in school publications has not been limited to the annual, for she has also been a member of the paper staff for two years. Throughout her high school career, she has been a member of the pep squad and an officer in FHA. She was also a member of the choir her first three years in high school, being a soloist in many cantatas and concerts. As a freshman, Joyce was an officer of her class and was elected best -natured girl in school. In that year she was also queen of the annual Harvest Festival. After considering her unbounded enthusiasm in serving her school and classmates, one can readily see why Joyce is exceptionally qualified for Who's Who. It is not difficult to seewhy Carl Wright was selected for Who's Who honors. He has been active in practically every area of extra-curri- cular activity While maintaining membership in the National HonorSociety for two years as well. Perhaps his greatest interest has been in Student Council, for he has been a member throughout his high school career. He served as vice-president his junior year and was elected president as a senior. Under his leadership the constitution has been completely revised and many more activities begun in SHS. The Council has recognized his work by selecting him to attend the 1957 Galveston and 1959 Brownsville State Conventions. His talents as a public speaker has been shown by his winning second twice in extern- oraneous speech at the Regional Interscholastic League speech contest He was named est Actor in the district one-act play contest also He has served' on the annual staff for three years and has worked with the paper his enior year. He has also been amernber of the Spanish and Creative Wr1ter's Clubs and as won various academic awards. Upon his graduation SHS will lose one of its most cap ble and hard-working students. A teacher's ideal student is personified in Marga Warrington. However she has also de- voted herself to many activities. She has served her school as a student council member her junior year and as a class officer and newspaper reporter when she was a sophomore and junior. Her talents have been shown by her interest in choir, of which she was a member for three years. She has also served as an officer of the Spanish and Creative Writer's Clubs. Marga is actively working toward her goal of entering the medical profession by working and studying at the hospital peach day. There are few students who are as willing to work to- ward attaining the fulfillment of an ambition as Marga is. Marsha Bristow is the only Who's Who st dent who is not a senior. This distinction Vw not gainedwithout justification, because she hi been active in many areas of student life. The Student Council has counted her amo its most active members for the last two year As a result of her service, she was chosen attend the Southe rn Association of Student Cou cils in Corpus Christi this year. Marsha has been a band member and rn jorette for the past four years, beginning Junior High. She is a well-rounded student. Not only she a National Honor Society Member, but als a basketball player. This year she has served on the staffs of the Buffalo Heard and t Yearbook. FHA has especially interested Marsha. Among other honors, she has been electe district FHA president for 1960-61, With so many things already accomplished, her potential as a student is great indeed WHO'S WHO IN STANTON HIGH These are students chosen by the Faculty who, in comparisonwith the average of their classmates, 1. have shown themselves to be better all-around citizensg 2. have greater potentialities for future usefulness in themselves and to societyg 3. have shown a superior or above average proficiency in some or all of the following: a. scholarship d. speech b. athletics e. 1'I1uSiC c. publications f. leadership and service in school, church, or community service g. membership and services in offices held in school organizations h. useful and successful hobbies v K . Norman Donelson, the Buffa- loes have had a very fine season. Of games played, they won Z5 and lost 4. They won two first place trophies in tournaments and one fourth. The firsts at Dawson and Garden City, and the fourth at the Big Lake Tournament in which Z4 teams were involved. The Buffaloes won all their district games and so the championship of District 6-A. At the time the Year Book goes to press, we know that Donelson has won a place on the all- district and all-area teams.
