With many hours of hard work and the new auditorium on their side, the juniors brought in approximately 600 people. The play was a good ol' hillbilly com- edy and the cast played it to the tee. The audience thoroughly en- joyed the play and they were kept laughing until curtain call. Cast members included: Lance Car- rithers, as Paw; Shari Campbell, as Maw; Teri Sadler, as Ceelie; Holly Jordan, as Bonnie Mae; Terri Scrivner, as Four; Laura Hume, as Five; Elaine Post, as Six; which concludes the Bels- nickle family. The Upschlagers, Obeey and Chiz were Tim Bluhm and Keith Thompson. The strang- ers, Ronald and Lucy Maxwell, were Donnie Von Hemel, and Tammy Martin. The hillbilly reverend was Nathan Luna. Cousin Zeke, Tim Hampton, and the cousins, Mike Pearce, Debra Glasscock, Earl Van Hooser, Win- elda Wamock, Julie Kendrick, and Shelley Brown highlighted the play with the beginning of the feud and the so-called hillbilly music. It was fun to see as well as fun to do. Directors Phil Thornton and Dee Claassen enjoyed direct- ing as well as the cast enjoyed acting! 14 The Hillbilly Hustle Juniors Get It Right In The Kisser! In this particular event the classes competed to see which class could decorate their hall with the most signs and add the most spirit (The seniors were victorious, of course). Throughout the week, students could place money in the jar of the cheerlead- er they believed to be most qualified to kiss the pig. Winelda Wamock won the contest and kissed the pig at the pep assembly. Winelda, who said she had never kissed a pig, did a fairly good job only after a demonstration from Ms. Davis. The Queen candi- dates and their escorts were: Gayle Moore and Craig Adams; Teri Sadler and David Lehman; Trecia Lewis and Curt McElroy; Jan Pearce and Rick Wilson; Trish Cauthon and Mike Horton. On Friday, the teachers entered routines in a Gong show, which was probably the most exciting assembly SCHS has had all year. Debaters attended tour- naments at Leoti, Lakin, Holcomb, Sa- tanta, Hugoton, and Ulysses. They debated 146 rounds and came out with 61 wins and 75 losses which gave them a win average of 42%. Forensic students attended the League Tournament at Tribune, Regionals at Gar- den City and State at Liberal. The debaters and forensics students are coached by Mr. Zollinger. Drama students were (Back to Front, Left to Right): T. Cordes, L. Carrithers, Mr. Zollinger, D. Bluhm, R. Gorden, H. Jor- dan, T. Martin, S. Campbell, T. Lewis, W. Cram, C. Lewis. It caused a lot of suspense because no one knew exactly how the decorations would turn out. To help carry out the theme 1 'DREAM,1' the unsuspecting seniors gladly contribut- ed their childhood dreams. Little did they know what Lance Carrithers would do with them! The juniors honored the seniors by giving them mugs as prom fa - vors. Even though the decorations couldn't be as ex- tensive as previous years, the commons area was brightly decorated and everyone enjoyed dancing to the music MADGIC. The servers for this year's Junior-Senior Banquet were: Carol Amerin, Shannon Barton, Cecilia Schweizer, Karla Pearce, Trecia Lewis, Shane Cockreham, Curt McElroy, Dean Molz, Wade Cauthon, and Andy Truji- llo. 41 The Ambitious And The Bilingual Spanish Club took their annual trip to Mexico over spring break. They spent their time in Juarez, Mexico where they went to dog races, attended a Catholic mass, watched a movie, and visited an agricultural school. On their way back they went to Carlsbad Cav- erns . The trip was a success and it helped every person have a better appreciation for this country and the things we take for granted. It was an enjoyable exper- ience for sponsors as well as students. The F.C.A. group held an egg drive for their annual fund raising project. The members divided into groups and were appointed a certain section of town to cover. At the first house they went to, they asked for an egg. If that was successful, they went to the next house to sell the egg for whatever price they could get. The money was used to buy the Long Term Care Unit a ta- ble for their activity room. It was really a fun pro- ject ! The freshman cheerleaders were (From Left to Right): Terri Ashida, Karen Trujillo, Cyndee Lewis, and Trish Hudgens. The cheerleaders planned and participated at homecoming activities. They are pictured below in their 50's day costumes. They also added spirit to the games and pep rallies this year by performing several dance routines. Cheryl Dyer was elected as mascot and at- tended all the games to help the cheerleaders yell. To The Frontier And Back Twenty-four students, eight sponsors, and one dog left Johnson at 8:00 Saturday morning and arrived at Bent's Old Fort at 10:30 CST. After viewing a film they divided into two groups for a tour of the fort. The weather cooperated in recreating the past by providing cold wind and cloudy skies. Not being as hardy as the trappers and traders of Bent's Fort's heydey, they chose to eat their sack lunches on the bus. Alter an afternoon of more exploring they hit the trail for home. Those present and accounted for were: Sponsors Mike and Jeanie Stein, Ann Davis, David and Steve Parman, Jim and Beaty Robb, and Kerrin Smith; students Ceci- lia Schweizer, Trecia Lewis, Cheryl Dyer, Larry Hoo- pingamer, Mike Riedel, Kelly Beauchamp, Mark Phipps, Teri Sadler, Trish Cauthon, Winelda War- nock, Terri Scrivner, Tim Bluhm, Debra Glascock, Keith Thompson, Lance Carrithers, Shari Wartman, Tammy Martin, David Johnson, Earl Van Hooser, Tara Stein, Rick Stein, Sara Stein, Travis Smith, Shelia Wilkerson; dog Brandy Stein. 46 k Pep Club Sounds Of Pep Club spent an active year supporting athletic teams and planning festivities for home - comings. As money-making projects, members sold gold Trojan sweaters and plastic spirit buttons inscribed Tro- jans aren't everything, they're the ONLY thing. A hambur- ger fry ended the year for Pep Club. Officers were: Tammy Martin, President; Shari Mor- ris, Vice-President; Secretary, Julie Kendrick; Treasurer, Pam Von Hemel; Stuco, Shari Campbell; Sponsors, Miss George, Mr. Thornton and Mr. Adams. 47 Stuco Decks The Halls With Gifts From us to you was the strategy practiced by Stuco members this year. Y-Teens Success Is Key-Word The annual Y-teen con- ference was held at Johnson this year. After many hours of hard work, the girls agreed that the day was a big success. The 1978 vocal class undertook the task of perform- ing a musical for the closing of the 1978 school year. The production didn't go on without some of the usual problems of a major production. Bub Brown and Jan Josserand were unable to attend the final rehearsal; Bub was hospitalized and Jan was ill. But, when open- ing night arrived both the audience and the cast of 25 knew they had prepared well for the performance. It was the first musical to be presented in the new school. The musical ' 'On Broadway'' was written by Val Cheaham, a 1951 graduate of Stanton County High School. The show was termed a big success by all. Who said graduates of Stanton County High School can't contribute to our culture? Willinger, J. Banning, M. Hoffman, J. Sadler. 54 Positive leadership, hustle, and frustration are all adjectives to describe the 1977 football season. The Trojans finished the season with an identical record to the previous year 3-6. Senior leadership and effort were qualities helping the young players to improve. In addition to the seniors' leadership and hustle, frustration was evident. It was evident with the loss of the overtime game, and two in the closing moments. Overall the season was a gain in personal growth. Each young man had success and defeat. Each of these points allowed them to grow stronger in themselves and their fellow teammates.'' COACH TAYLOF 55 Go For It Volleyball, in its second year at S.C.H.S., had a progressive season. Although the team didn't win any tournaments, they improved their skills and came out with a 11-15 season. The girls had lots of fun with Sharon George as their new coach. The team will only be losing 3 girls and Ms. George looks forward to a good season next year. Members of the team were (Back Row, Left to Right): Ms. George, Tammy Martin, Linda Bluhm, Shannon Barton, Kara Beauchamp, Shari Campbell, DeEtta Tucker, Manager; Middle Row: Karen Trujillo, Shelly Brown, Gayle Moore, Senior; Pam Von Hemel, Senior; Leona Wilkerson, Senior; Cheryl Dyer; Front Row: Jeri Sosa, Beth Moore, Juanita Bios. Front Row: Gregg McElroy, Gary Barton, Mike Morris, Randy Bar- nett, David Glasscock, Jesse Huerta, Todd Wilhelm. And They’re Off! Cross Country worked very hard this year and improved steadily. After taking third place in the league meet, held at Johnson, the team went on to defeat Lakin, the league champs in the regional meet. At regionals, Johnson placed fourth and missed going to state by one point. Although this was the first time in many years that Johnson failed to go to the state meet, Coach Morris felt it was a successful season because individual runners improved their performances. T rojans Fight To The End The basketball girls had a successful 77-78 season with a win-loss record of 15-4. They had only been defeated by Lakin until they met Cimmaron at Regionals. This year, the girls had two new coaches, Head Coach Troy Sadler and Assistant Coach Sharon George. Sadler stressed fundamentals in training and by the end of the year the girls had improved 100% in basic skills. Both coaches attributed the Trojans success to hard work, drive, and team spirit. The girls squad included (Back Row, Left to Right): Managers — Gayle Moore and Shelly Brown, Lynda Blumn, Kara Beauchamp, Shari Campbell, Cecilia Schweizer, Assistant Coach Sharon George, Head Coach Troy Sadler. Middle Row: Shannon Barton, Leona Wilkerson, Cheryl Dyer, Teresa Riedel, Karen Trujillo, Ten Sadler. Front Row: Kyla Sadler, Pam Von He- mel, Terri Ashida, Trish Beamer, Beth Moore, Jan Pearce, Dona Kistler. 58 What’s Going On? 59 Bottoms Up!!! The 1977-78 basketball season was a season of possibilities, may- bes, and could have beens. The record for the boys varsity was 5-11, but this didn't show the closeness of some of the games and the strug- gle that everyone went through. While we were all disappointed at the outcome, it is my hope that we learned something about the game, about our friends, and about ourselves.--------------Coach Robb Freshman squad included (Back Row, Left to Right): Da- vid Taylor, Clint Beamer, Rick Wilson, Kelly Young. Middle row: Mark Thompson, Bryant Willinger, Marty Lloyd. First row: Bill Hoffman, Doug Murray, Jeff Sadler. Both qualified for state. 63 The girls' track team set a number of school records this year. Lisa McGowne threw the shot put 36'8 and the discus 106'5''. Jeri Sosa became an SCHS celebri- ty when she ran the mile in 5:49.9. Leona Wilkerson ran the 440 in 60.8 and the 880 in 232.7. Dona Kistler dashed 220 yards in 27.1. One of the most taxing and most rewarding was the completion of the new high school. Students and faculty moved books, desks, and as- sorted paraphernalia from the old high school on March 10, the day before spring break. Classes resumed in the new building, where faculty and students, confronted with unfamiliar surroundings, began to establish new paths and routines. 1 'Where is it? was a frequent question; ' '1 got lost,1' a common complaint. An open house was held for the public on May 7. People who were instrumental in the planning and building of the school were recognized at a brief dedication ceremony. Guests were then invited to wander through the halls, chat with teachers and personnel and examine equipment and facilities. The Board has made the auditorium and swimming pool available to groups for a nominal fee, thus expanding the school's services to the community. Adult classes in Spanish and dancing were offered this year as was a GED program. Others will be scheduled if the public is inter- ested. David Walters John Harper, superintendent, was largely responsible for the construction phase of the new school. He was assisted by Iris Lane. Dave Walters, S.C.H.S. principal, oversaw the moving and settling in of the student body, a time-consuming ex- perience. Diane Brown's ser- vices as secretary were indis- pensable. School Board mem- bers in this historic year were: Bob Plummer, Dwight Mitch- ell, President; Harry Bilbery, Larry Martin, VP; Darrel Ruth, Faydean Fiss, and Lewis Shore.
