Commercial Arts Your margin's off, Bob, points out Mr. Garrett. Miss Rempel looks on approvingly as girls sew. The industrial arts department covered an area of study which will be used by some students in future occupations. Herbert Garrett taught mechanical drawing, shop I and II and farm shop. Mr. Garrett was football coach and a sponsor of the J- Club and the sophomore class. Studies of the fundamentals of cooking and sewing through studies in home living and tailoring gave girls an opportunity to further their knowledge of home econo- mics. Miss Rempel taught four classes of home economics and was a junior class sponsor. Driver's education students kept busy studying traffic laws and regulations, work- ing problems and driving. Equally busy was their instructor, Mr. Morris. Flight training ground school was added to the curriculum this year. The fundamen- tals of the airplane, meteorology, com- munications, and other aspects of flying were studied. Mr. Downs, a qualified pilot, instructed the class. Training received by the students prepared them for the FAA ex- amination toward a pilot's license. Mr. Downs reviews a test in ground school. 14

Mr. Herndon examines a new book before placing it on the shelf for use. Mr. Herndon was kept busy again this year working as librarian and teaching li- brary science classes. Students studying li- brary science learned the basic fundamen- tals of the course and then applied their learning by helping Mr. Herndon catalogue books for the shelves and prepare files. This year about 200 new books were added to the library. Mr. Herndon also served as a sophomore class sponsor. Que pasa? (What's the matter?) This year Mrs. Fiss taught Spanish I, II, and III and sponsored Spanish Club. The Spanish I and II classes studied the basic fundamentals of the Spanish language. A demand for a Spanish III class was met and the course was offered again after being discontinued for a year. The Spanish II and III students participated in a contest at Wichita State University. Mrs. Fiss also sponsored the junior class this year. Business Mr. Ogletree maintained a busy schedule this year teaching typing I and II, bookkeeping, business law, and business math. The typing I class kept busy learning the basic fundamentals in typewriting. The students in typing II prepared themselves for secretarial work by typing prob- lems and doing extra work for teachers. One main point learned by students in business law is that one shouldn't be his own lawyer. Students in business math studied basic fundamentals that will be useful in later life. The book- keeping students studied the keep- ing of business records and prepa- ration of income tax forms. The remainder of Mr. Ogle- tree's time was spent sponsoring J-Club and the freshman class, and coaching basketball and track. No, I won't take $. 37 to make this balance. 13

Music Contests, programs, concerts and a trip to the state fair totaled up to a full year for the students participating in music activities. Serving as a form of self and group expression, music helps a student to broaden his interests and learning. Homer Hopper directed the band, mixed chorus, boys' chorus and girls' chorus. Mr. Hopper also directed the grade school bands in the district and gave instruction in instrumental music. Contest solos and ensembles for both high school and grade school contests kept Mr. Hopper busy. Mr. Hopper sings and directs in mixed chorus. Physical Education The physical education department was enlarged this year to include advanced P. E. and another staff member, Mrs. Hopper. Advanced P. E. was an elective course offered to girls and boys in the sophomore, junior, and senior classes. Freshman P. E. classes had both health and P. E. on alternating days. Mrs. Hopper taught freshman and advanced girls' P. E. Mrs. Hopper was a Pep Club co-sponsor and also taught girls' physical education at the Johnson Grade School. Freshman and advanced boys' P. E. were in- structed by Mr. Morris. Mr. Morris was the track coach, cross-country coach, assistant basketball coach and a sponsor of J-Club and the senior class.
