Language Arts The language arts department is one of the most important areas of study in preparing stu- dents for furthering their educations. Mrs. Che no we th started the students through their high school studies, teaching English I and II. Both of the classes studied the fundamentals of grammar along with literature and vocabu- lary assignments. In addition to her English classes, Mrs. Chenoweth was the Y-Teens sponsor and director of the Senior Play. This year Mrs. Davidson was kept busy teaching English III and IV and journalism. The English III students spent the year studying grammar and literature, with some composition also included. The seniors in English IV spent much of the year studying composition in prep- aration for college. Some time was also spent in the study of classical literature. This was the first year for journalism class. The students in the class published a school newspaper and edited the annual under Mrs. Davidson's super- vision. Mrs. Davidson was also a senior class sponsor. Miss Kennedy taught speech I and II, de- bate, and dramatics this year. The speech classes spent part of the year in practicing plays and then presented them to the grade schools. The debate sutdents participated in several tournaments and the drama students competed at speech festivals. Miss Kennedy directed the Junior Play. Mrs. Chenoweth checks her daily lesson plans for her freshman and sophomore English classes. Mrs. Davidson explains MACBETH to tlie juniors. Miss Kennedy emphasizes creativ- ity in expression. 12

Social Sciences This year, for the first time, the Stanton County school system has a counselor; Jake Hawkins came to Johnson from Carrizozo, New Mexico. Besides being counselor for the county schools he taught one class of psychology the first semester and vocations the second semester. Vocations is a new course of- fered for the first time this year. It is for junior and senior students. During the semester they studied a variety of career choices. He was the consessions supervisor at all the home basketball games. As well as being principal, Fred Staker taught two classes of American government. The govern- ment class studied thoroughly the nomination and election process in this country. They were able to see firsthand the events taking place in the election year of 1968. They also studied the Constitution and all of the amendments plus the many phases of our government in the United States. Rondi Ott is an instructor of the social sciences in the high school. She teaches two classes of American history, two classes of world history, economics the first semester and sociology the sec- ond semester. Miss Ott was one of the four teachers who got to use the new mobile units. Her perma- nent room was the mobile south unit. Miss Ott was also a pep club sponsor. Mr. Hawkins enjoys teaching vocations class. Mr. Staker takes up his daily job of lec- turing the third hour American government class. The war started when, Anita? asks Miss Ott during second hour American history class. 11

Mr. Herndon examines a new book before placing it on the shelf for use. Mr. Herndon was kept busy again this year working as librarian and teaching li- brary science classes. Students studying li- brary science learned the basic fundamen- tals of the course and then applied their learning by helping Mr. Herndon catalogue books for the shelves and prepare files. This year about 200 new books were added to the library. Mr. Herndon also served as a sophomore class sponsor. Que pasa? (What's the matter?) This year Mrs. Fiss taught Spanish I, II, and III and sponsored Spanish Club. The Spanish I and II classes studied the basic fundamentals of the Spanish language. A demand for a Spanish III class was met and the course was offered again after being discontinued for a year. The Spanish II and III students participated in a contest at Wichita State University. Mrs. Fiss also sponsored the junior class this year. Business Mr. Ogletree maintained a busy schedule this year teaching typing I and II, bookkeeping, business law, and business math. The typing I class kept busy learning the basic fundamentals in typewriting. The students in typing II prepared themselves for secretarial work by typing prob- lems and doing extra work for teachers. One main point learned by students in business law is that one shouldn't be his own lawyer. Students in business math studied basic fundamentals that will be useful in later life. The book- keeping students studied the keep- ing of business records and prepa- ration of income tax forms. The remainder of Mr. Ogle- tree's time was spent sponsoring J-Club and the freshman class, and coaching basketball and track. No, I won't take $. 37 to make this balance. 13
