Mr. Smith helps Evelyn focus the microscope on an amoeba. Reviewing for a test is very im- portant in Mr. Downs' chemistry classes. Science and Math The need for science and math is certainly be- coming more important in this ever-expanding, ever-complex, space age world. Mr. Smith, Mr. Downs, and Mr. Parks have helped to prepare many students to meet this demanding world. This year the science and math departments were expanded to include three instructors with the addition of Kerrin Smith. Mr. Smith taught general science, and biology classes. Acting as one of the junior class sponsors was his major extracurricular activity. One of the main projects of the general science students was learning all the bones and muscles of the human body. The biology students, as usual, became very accustomed to the smell of formaldehyde. Physics, chemistry I and II, and algebra I were taught by Mr. Downs. Mr. Downs kept his students busy learning the basic principles of algebra, per- forming experiments, and solving problems. Charing his spare time Mr. Downs served as one of the senior class sponsors. Mr. Parks had a busy schedule this year teaching general math, two classes of algebra II, geometry, and trigonometry. In all of his classes, he placed special emphasis on the development of logical reasoning. As one of the freshman class sponsors, Mr. Parks was kept occupied with many activities. Rod listens as Mr. Parks explains the mysteries of algebra II. 10

Social Sciences This year, for the first time, the Stanton County school system has a counselor; Jake Hawkins came to Johnson from Carrizozo, New Mexico. Besides being counselor for the county schools he taught one class of psychology the first semester and vocations the second semester. Vocations is a new course of- fered for the first time this year. It is for junior and senior students. During the semester they studied a variety of career choices. He was the consessions supervisor at all the home basketball games. As well as being principal, Fred Staker taught two classes of American government. The govern- ment class studied thoroughly the nomination and election process in this country. They were able to see firsthand the events taking place in the election year of 1968. They also studied the Constitution and all of the amendments plus the many phases of our government in the United States. Rondi Ott is an instructor of the social sciences in the high school. She teaches two classes of American history, two classes of world history, economics the first semester and sociology the sec- ond semester. Miss Ott was one of the four teachers who got to use the new mobile units. Her perma- nent room was the mobile south unit. Miss Ott was also a pep club sponsor. Mr. Hawkins enjoys teaching vocations class. Mr. Staker takes up his daily job of lec- turing the third hour American government class. The war started when, Anita? asks Miss Ott during second hour American history class. 11
