STANTON COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL Johnson, Kansas C'ROJAT! Colors of the Year The kaleidoscope of school life is a constantly changing scene, vibrant and colorful in its pattern. Reflections from the school kaleidoscope provide a cross section of school life. Injuries of various forms hampered many students during the year. Yet despite the accident epidemic, homework went on. The library was the scene of many hours of diligent study. The pride in fighting athletic teams, the rewards of practice and precision, the time spent with friends color the school year. 2 Foreword Table of Contents Administration...................5 Seniors.........................17 Juniors.........................25 Sophomores......................29 Freshmen........................33 Activities......................37 Grade Schools...................69 The decade of the Sixties will be known in history as the Decade of Change. Man, in his eternal search for knowledge, has found wonders beyond his wildest dreams. From the harnessing of the atom's power, to the penetration of space, change has been the password. Stanton County High School, in its role as educator, has been an instrument of change. Continual expansion of courses and improvement of teaching facilities have been major factors in the develop- ment of responsible, intelligent citizens, better prepared for their place in a com- plex world. This 1969 Trojan shows the change accomplished in the last year of the Decade of Change, the advances made to meet the challenge of the future, the development of Trojans. ADCDITCIS HAGIOTi Today s Choices Determine Tomorrow’s Achievements Your parents, teachers, counselor, and friends have trodden the path that you are treading. Listen to the advice they have to offer. It comes from the school of experience and hard knocks. In addition, try aspiration, inspiration, and lots of perspiration. John W. Harper Supt. of Schools JOHN W. HARPER Superintendent SCHOOL BOARD: STANDING-Harry Bilbery, John W. Harper, Supt. ; Earl Arnold. SITTING-Howard Campbell, Wayne Snell, Eugene Friesen, Vice-Pres. ; Lewis Shore, Pres. 6 Citizens of this country have long recognized the importance of education. Americans share a common faith in the power of education to free the individual so that he may properly guide his own destinies, develop his potentialities, and be a moral and upright citizen capable of governing himself. Stanton County High School seeks to provide the opportunity for each student to make the most of his talents and abilities. It is the responsibility of you, the student, to accept the challenge and make the maxi- mum use of the opportunities provided and develop your potential to its fullest extent. I trust that each of you have been successful in meeting this challenge this year. I wish the best of luck to all of you in your tasks. Sincerely, S FRED F. Science and Math The need for science and math is certainly be- coming more important in this ever-expanding, ever-complex, space age world. Mr. Smith, Mr. Downs, and Mr. Parks have helped to prepare many students to meet this demanding world. This year the science and math departments were expanded to include three instructors with the addition of Kerrin Smith. Mr. Smith taught general science, and biology classes. Acting as one of the junior class sponsors was his major extracurricular activity. One of the main projects of the general science students was learning all the bones and muscles of the human body. The biology students, as usual, became very accustomed to the smell of formaldehyde. Physics, chemistry I and II, and algebra I were taught by Mr. Downs. Mr. Downs kept his students busy learning the basic principles of algebra, per- forming experiments, and solving problems. Charing his spare time Mr. Downs served as one of the senior class sponsors. Mr. Parks had a busy schedule this year teaching general math, two classes of algebra II, geometry, and trigonometry. In all of his classes, he placed special emphasis on the development of logical reasoning. As one of the freshman class sponsors, Mr. Parks was kept occupied with many activities. Rod listens as Mr. Parks explains the mysteries of algebra II. 10 Social Sciences This year, for the first time, the Stanton County school system has a counselor; Jake Hawkins came to Johnson from Carrizozo, New Mexico. Besides being counselor for the county schools he taught one class of psychology the first semester and vocations the second semester. Vocations is a new course of- fered for the first time this year. It is for junior and senior students. During the semester they studied a variety of career choices. He was the consessions supervisor at all the home basketball games. As well as being principal, Fred Staker taught two classes of American government. The govern- ment class studied thoroughly the nomination and election process in this country. They were able to see firsthand the events taking place in the election year of 1968. They also studied the Constitution and all of the amendments plus the many phases of our government in the United States. Rondi Ott is an instructor of the social sciences in the high school. She teaches two classes of American history, two classes of world history, economics the first semester and sociology the sec- ond semester. Miss Ott was one of the four teachers who got to use the new mobile units. Her perma- nent room was the mobile south unit. Miss Ott was also a pep club sponsor. Mr. Hawkins enjoys teaching vocations class. Mr. Staker takes up his daily job of lec- turing the third hour American government class. The war started when, Anita? asks Miss Ott during second hour American history class. 11 Language Arts The language arts department is one of the most important areas of study in preparing stu- dents for furthering their educations. Mrs. Che no we th started the students through their high school studies, teaching English I and II. Both of the classes studied the fundamentals of grammar along with literature and vocabu- lary assignments. In addition to her English classes, Mrs. Chenoweth was the Y-Teens sponsor and director of the Senior Play. This year Mrs. Davidson was kept busy teaching English III and IV and journalism. The English III students spent the year studying grammar and literature, with some composition also included. The seniors in English IV spent much of the year studying composition in prep- aration for college. Some time was also spent in the study of classical literature. This was the first year for journalism class. The students in the class published a school newspaper and edited the annual under Mrs. Davidson's super- vision. Mrs. Davidson was also a senior class sponsor. Miss Kennedy taught speech I and II, de- bate, and dramatics this year. The speech classes spent part of the year in practicing plays and then presented them to the grade schools. The debate sutdents participated in several tournaments and the drama students competed at speech festivals. Miss Kennedy directed the Junior Play. Mrs. Chenoweth checks her daily lesson plans for her freshman and sophomore English classes. Mrs. Davidson explains MACBETH to tlie juniors. Miss Kennedy emphasizes creativ- ity in expression. 12 Mr. Herndon examines a new book before placing it on the shelf for use. Mr. Herndon was kept busy again this year working as librarian and teaching li- brary science classes. Students studying li- brary science learned the basic fundamen- tals of the course and then applied their learning by helping Mr. Herndon catalogue books for the shelves and prepare files. This year about 200 new books were added to the library. Mr. Herndon also served as a sophomore class sponsor. Que pasa? (What's the matter?) This year Mrs. Fiss taught Spanish I, II, and III and sponsored Spanish Club. The Spanish I and II classes studied the basic fundamentals of the Spanish language. A demand for a Spanish III class was met and the course was offered again after being discontinued for a year. The Spanish II and III students participated in a contest at Wichita State University. Mrs. Fiss also sponsored the junior class this year. Business Mr. Ogletree maintained a busy schedule this year teaching typing I and II, bookkeeping, business law, and business math. The typing I class kept busy learning the basic fundamentals in typewriting. The students in typing II prepared themselves for secretarial work by typing prob- lems and doing extra work for teachers. One main point learned by students in business law is that one shouldn't be his own lawyer. Students in business math studied basic fundamentals that will be useful in later life. The book- keeping students studied the keep- ing of business records and prepa- ration of income tax forms. The remainder of Mr. Ogle- tree's time was spent sponsoring J-Club and the freshman class, and coaching basketball and track. No, I won't take $. 37 to make this balance. 13 Commercial Arts Your margin's off, Bob, points out Mr. Garrett. Miss Rempel looks on approvingly as girls sew. The industrial arts department covered an area of study which will be used by some students in future occupations. Herbert Garrett taught mechanical drawing, shop I and II and farm shop. Mr. Garrett was football coach and a sponsor of the J- Club and the sophomore class. Studies of the fundamentals of cooking and sewing through studies in home living and tailoring gave girls an opportunity to further their knowledge of home econo- mics. Miss Rempel taught four classes of home economics and was a junior class sponsor. Driver's education students kept busy studying traffic laws and regulations, work- ing problems and driving. Equally busy was their instructor, Mr. Morris. Flight training ground school was added to the curriculum this year. The fundamen- tals of the airplane, meteorology, com- munications, and other aspects of flying were studied. Mr. Downs, a qualified pilot, instructed the class. Training received by the students prepared them for the FAA ex- amination toward a pilot's license. Mr. Downs reviews a test in ground school. 14 Music Contests, programs, concerts and a trip to the state fair totaled up to a full year for the students participating in music activities. Serving as a form of self and group expression, music helps a student to broaden his interests and learning. Homer Hopper directed the band, mixed chorus, boys' chorus and girls' chorus. Mr. Hopper also directed the grade school bands in the district and gave instruction in instrumental music. Contest solos and ensembles for both high school and grade school contests kept Mr. Hopper busy. Mr. Hopper sings and directs in mixed chorus. Physical Education The physical education department was enlarged this year to include advanced P. E. and another staff member, Mrs. Hopper. Advanced P. E. was an elective course offered to girls and boys in the sophomore, junior, and senior classes. Freshman P. E. classes had both health and P. E. on alternating days. Mrs. Hopper taught freshman and advanced girls' P. E. Mrs. Hopper was a Pep Club co-sponsor and also taught girls' physical education at the Johnson Grade School. Freshman and advanced boys' P. E. were in- structed by Mr. Morris. Mr. Morris was the track coach, cross-country coach, assistant basketball coach and a sponsor of J-Club and the senior class. Did you say fibia? questions Mrs. Hopper. Coach Morris explains a basketball play. BACK ROW: Mr. Herbert Garrett, Mr. Clarence Morris, Jr., and Mr. Bill Baxter. Service Personnel Mrs. Ashida and Mrs. Baxter spent many long hours preparing food for the hungry students at SCHS. Mrs. Taylor helped them serve approximately 150 stu- dents a day. Mrs. Taylor also helped Bill Laupe with the big job of constantly caring for the school. They kept the halls shining, windows cleaned, and replaced broken fixtures. Transporting many students back and forth from school each day were our busy bus drivers. Besides teaching, Mr. Parks, Mr. Ogletree, Mr. Garrett, and Mr. Morris ail drove a bus route. Closing out the staff are Mr. Baxter and Rev. Houston. SETHOKS SENIORS Prepare for the Future It has been said that the senior year is the hardest and the easiest, the happiest and the saddest, the longest and the shortest. This certainly describes the year for the graduating class of 1969. As seniors we realized the importance of working towards and maintaining a high scho- lastic record. We also made many serious decisions concerning future plans, whether to attend college or to fulfill our service obli- gation. This year contained many exciting mo- ments which we will always treasure. Among these memories are special classes and teachers, senior pictures, senior play, sports activities, pep rallies and homecomings, yearbook production and sales, senior carni- val, the senior trip, Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom, class night and graduation. While all these events were most certainly happy ones, at the same time they were also sad because we kept thinking, Gee! This is the last time ... They also found themselves looking ahead to the future and studying harder. Their jun- ior year got off to a good start when they received the long awaited class rings they had ordered the end of their sophomore year. Next on the agenda was the staging of their chief money making proj- ect, magazine sales. Sales netted the class a much needed $1, 125. 79. The juniors were in charge of the Christmas gift exchange after the Christmas Chapel. They sorted and passed out the gifts and cards and supplied a Santa Claus for the occasion. These accomplishments behind them, the spring of 1969 offered the class new challenges. Working on the junior play and planning the Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom kept the class busy. Then came the actual work on the all important Prom. The jun- iors will remember the sighs of relief when the last crepe paper streamer was strung, and the sense of pride they felt when they looked at the result. The knowledge and wisdom obtained their junior year prepared die class of '70 to take their place as seniors. As sophomores, the class participated more actively in school life. At the beginning of the year, they presented the Thanksgiving Chapel, with the Rev. Eldon Fry as guest speaker. Over two- thirds of the boys went out for athletics, including football, cross-country, basketball, and track; they helped to win many games and meets. Many of the sophomores participated in music activities. Their outstanding achievement was that the girls' double quintet received a I rating at State Music Contest. They added extra sparkle to the school during pep rallies and assemblies. One of the major highlights of the sophomore year was the ordering of their class rings at the end of the school year. At the close of school, the sophomores were already looking forward to being upperclassmen next year. j Shirley Adams Debra Barefoot Eliseo Arellano Kristie Brewer Jill Carrithers Class Officers: STANDING: Tony Cheatham, Treasurer; Connie Nicholas, Stuco Representative. At the be- ginning of the year the Freshmen were easy to recognize for they were a little bewildered, a little awkward, and lacking confidence. However, they soon became acquainted with high school life and participated whole- heartedly in school activities and had an enthusiasm ad- mired by ail. The remainder of the year was filled with the excite- ment of parties, homework, which for some meant learning to study, and other school activities. The Freshmen planned and presented Easter Chapel. The guest speaker was Mrs. Roberta Brewer. By the end of the year, the Freshmen were looking forward to three more years of high school. The Trojan band, in meeting this pledge, was involved in numerous contests, concerts, and programs during the school year. Highlighting a year which included the annual Fall Band Concert and Spring Musi- cal was competition in the State Music Festival held at Dodge City. The band re- ceived a IV rating, and a III in sight-read- ing, which reflects the stricter trend in judging. In addition, selected instrumental quartets received ratings comparable to the band. McKinney, B. Martin, D. Football The Trojan football team proved too inexperienced and small to match the skill and size of their opponents. The team was plagued with numerous injuries and failed to win a single game. In the past three seasons the Trojan football team has been victorious only once. The freshman team showed spirit and drive when they knabbed three victories for SCHS, tied one game and lost only two games. A few more years of experience should help these boys shape up into a fine team. With the introduction of football in the grade school's athletic program in the future, the Trojan squad should have more experienced players. Ramsay, F. Borsdorf, manager. FRONT ROW--R. Athletic Banquet The annual Athletic Banquet sponsored by the J-Club was held on April 10. The boys and their fathers heard Bud Elliott, head football coach at Southwestern College, Winfield. Mr. Elliott spoke on the Ingredients of Success which he felt a good athlete needed and he challenged the boys to do the best they could in athletic events. A long line, huh, Bobby? 63 Did I hear the dinner bell? asks Bob Conard. Bud Elliott, Speaker. Evening in Venice The evening of the Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom was spent in the romantic atmo- sphere of Venice. The juniors transformed the gym into the beauty of Venice with a starry sky, a tinkling fountain, and a floating gondola. Mrs. John Harper set the mood for the evening by suggesting items we should take on our journey of life. Summertime in Venice was sung by Rita Julian. The evening was completed with the sound of the Soul Ex- press from Hays. A Venetian gondola provided atmosphere. Thank you, says Brent as he and Brenda are served by Mrs. Scott at the refresh- ment table. Guest speaker for the Banquet was Mrs. Harper. Jo and Larry watch the band perform as they dance. Everyone enjoyed the music and the rhythm of the Soul Express. 64 What's wrong Bob, won't it start? Playing cards was a favorite pastime. Senior Trip The class of '69 left the morning of March 24 and arrived at Breckenridge, Colorado in a snow storm about 6:00 P. M. The next three days found the seniors skiing or trying to ski, driving snowmobiles, bowling, playing cards and generally goofing off. The seniors were kept out of mischief by six able sponsors: Mr. Morris, Mr. Downs, Mr. Staker, Mrs. Davidson, and Mr. and Mrs. Lavere Walker. Seniors relax on the bus going home.
