The Trojan 1967-68 Stanton County High School Johnson, Kansas Foreword Our Fiftieth Year The world has changed vastly in the last fifty years. Progress that no man dreamed possible has been made and is be- ing made each day. In its own way Stanton County High School has been a part of this progress. Since its first graduating class of three people in 1918, Stanton County High has grown and expanded to be the modern institution of learning it is today. Courses have improve and new ones have been added to the high school curriculum. Technological advances have made new equipment available for use as learning aids and better tTained teachers have pro- vided new learning experiences for the growing number of students. As the quality of the educational system has risen, Stan- ton County High School is better preparing its Trojans today to be the leaders of tomorrow. This 1968 Trojan shows the progress made during the year and the work done as the students prepare to be leaders in our modern world. I able Of Contents Administration........................................3 Seniors............................................. 13 Class of 1918 20 Juniors..............................................21 Sophomores.......................................... 25 Freshmen.............................................29 Activities............................................. Grade School .......................................... 2 JOHN W. HARPER Superintendent SCHOOL BOARD: STANDING-Howard Cambell, Harry Bilbery Lewis Shore, Pres.; Eugene Freisen, Vice Pres.; Wayne Snell. An educated student is not one whose memory is trained to carry a few dates in history--he is one who can ac- complish things. A student who cannot think is not an educated person, how- ever many degrees he may have ac- quired. Thinking is the hardest work anyone can do--which is probably the reason why we have so few thinkers. There are two extremes to be avoided: one is the attitude of comtempt toward education, the other is the tragic snob- bery of assuming that marching through an educational system is a sure cure for ignorance and mediocrity. Many students are like a wheelbar- row--not good unless pushed. Some are like canoes--they have to be paddled. Some are like kites--if you don't keep a string on them, they fly away. Some are like footballs--you can't tell which way they'll bounce next. Some are like trailers--they have to be pulled. Some are like a good watch--open faced, pure gold, quietly busy, and full of good works. God will not look you over for med- als, degrees, or diplomas, as important as they are, but for good deeds, chari- ty, and to see if you have been a disci- ple of the Golden Rule. Sincerely, 0 John W. Harper Earl Arnold, John W. Harper, Supt. SITTING- This yearbook signals the comple- tion of another school year. It is my hope that this year has been a rewarding one which has enabled all of us to learn and mature and become better persons and citizens. The completion of a school year is not an ending; it is a beginning, espe- cially for those of you who graduate and move on to new experiences in a different and challenging world. The degree of success that you have in this world will depend upon you, and upon the application of your school experi- ences to the tasks before you. To the graduating seniors and all students of Stanton County, I extend sincere wishes for success in all that you undertake. May we always remem- ber each of you with pride. Mr. Ogletree checks to see that Greg is typing okay. Striving to prov ide a logical and precise picture of science, the science department stressed theories, models, and generalizations that show the unity of science. In Mr. Morris's class of general science, the students were busy dissecting pigs and various other ani- mals. Mr. Morris's extracurricular activities consisted of coaching basket- ball and track, and of being a senior class sponsor. Mr. Downs, also a senior class sponsor, taught biology , chemistry and physics. He kept his students busy by dissecting animals in biology, ex- perimenting in chemistry, and solving problems in physics. The main aims of the Math depart- ment were to prepare students for living successfully in our modern scientific world and to give a basis for a techno- logical career. Mr. Parks was kept busy teaching Algebra I and II, and Geome- try. Mr. Downs was involved in the Math department as the teacher of General Math. Whether a student plans for a ca- reer or for college after high school graduation, he will find that some of his most valuable courses are those in the business education department. General education should include the understanding of all aspects of life. If it fails to do so, it does not achieve its purpose. Coach Ogletree taught business law, typing I and II, shorthand, book- keeping and business math. Mr. Ogle- tree's extracurricular activities in- cluded coaching basketball, football and being a sophomore class sponsor. ACTUALLY, it's very simple, says Mr. Parks. Seniors gain knowledge as Mrs. Davidson explains THE MERCHANT OF VENICE. Defining new words is a part of Mrs. Chenoweth's daily English assignments. Mrs. Davidson and Mrs. Chenoweth of the English department worked to prepare students for college and future jobs. Besides their regular grammar studies, students de- veloped skills in composition by writing everything from single paragraphs to short stories. In literature as well as grammar, spelling, creative writing, and correct usage were stressed. Mrs. Chenoweth taught English I and English II. She directed the senior play and was sponsor of Y-Teen's. Mrs. Davidson sponsored the annual staff, taught English I, English III and English IV. The new speech curriculum aims were to teach students how to organize learning, how to use reason in making their own discoveries and how to present their ideas in a pleasing and convincing way. Mr. Howard taught speech, debate, dramatics and directed the Junior play. Mrs. Fiss taught Spanish I and Spanish II, which is essential in today's small world as contacts arc being made daily with for- eign speaking people. In her classes, facts about the country, culture, and customs were discovered. Mrs. Fiss spent a lot of her spare time working on the prom as a junior class sponsor. Spanish, Gerjnan, or Russian! wonders Mrs. Fiss 9 Teaching the fundamentals of democracy, history and the tradi- tions of our American heritage, were the principal responsibilities of the Social Science Department. Mr. Staker had two classes of American Government. He was the student council sponsor, freshmen class sponsor and our building supervisor. Miss Ott taught sociol- ogy, world history, psychology and economics, as well as co-sponsor- ing the Pep Club. Mr. Herndon, a sophomore sponsor, was kept busy in the li- brary with the shelving of over two thousand new books. With the remodeling of the library, a new atmosphere was created in Stanton County High. With Mr. Herndon's regular library science classes he conducted a five day session of intensified study to better acquaint students with research techniques in the library. Participation in music is a gratifying experience. It lifts the student to a high level of satis- faction. Equally important as the chance for excelling is a spirit of cooperation and a feeling of self- confidence gained by participation in music groups. Mr. Stanley stayed busy throughout the year directing boys' chorus, girls' chorus, and mixed chorus and band. Mr. Stanley' had the addi- tional responsibility of directing the grade school bands in the district. Place total adjusted income on this line, explains Mr. Staker The class watches intently as Miss Ott reviews a test. Coach Morris found excitement in teaching the students of the Driver's Education Class the funda- mentals of driving an automobile. Besides their driving, the students learned the parts of the auto- mobile. Industrial arts classes may be for some a place to relax and relieve pressures by doing constructive work with their hands, but others use these classes in preparation for a future vocation. Mr. Garrett was kept busy teaching die industrial arts classes. His mechanical drawing provides a background for many types of drafting and his woodworking classes had a practical value. He also taught crafts. Mr. Garrett was head football coach. Miss Remperl found her Home Economics classes frantically following everything from pattern guides to recipes. Fundamentals of nutrition, clothing, home management, interior decoration, and social living provided the • lome Economics girls with a sound background for a career, family, or both. Miss Rempel was also the Pep Club co-sponsor. Don't forget to check the oil, Mr. Morris tells his Driver's education students. 11 Non-Teaching Personnel Brightening the halls of Stanton County High School the cooks and janitors worked diligently to prepare the nutricious meals and keep the school house sparkling clean. The cooks, Mrs. Ashida and Mrs. Baxter, were aided by Mrs. Taylor in their daily preparations for the rush of hungry students. Mrs. Taylor also helped Mr. Lauppe in his never- ending work around the school. Besides their janitor work, they both helped immensely by doing special jobs for the students and by cheering them with their friendly smiles. The bus drivers were Mr. Stanley, Mr. Garrett, Mr. Morris, Rev. Houston, Mr. Parks, Mr. Downs, and Mr. Ogletree. They all did their share by safely transporting the many students to and from school each day. Mrs. Marjorie Baxter and Mrs. Amy Ashida Mr. Bill Lauppe and Mrs. Edna Taylor. As freshmen, the class began acquiring a mature outlook on life. As sopho- mores, the class became more interested in class money-raising projects. Then during their junior year, the class conducted a successful magazine sales program, and spent many happy hours to produce a prom, which would be an everlasting memory to them. During their last year, the seniors continued to strive for scho- lastic excellence that would be necessary for their various futures. The year was packed with senior pictures, senior play, yearbook sales, senior carnival, senior trip, Junior-Senior Ban- quet and Prom and GRADUATION! Members of the class of 1968 walked out of the doors of J. H. S. for the last time remembering all that had been involved in the transition from won- dering freshmen to confident seniors. Since then progress has been made possible by dedicated men and women doing their best to give to their children and grandchildren all the opportunities for an education. The first graduating class consisted of three young ladies: Neva Jones, Georgia Walker and Leah Yinger. In observance of this fiftieth anniversary the members of the first class should be recognized for their achievements and honored for their work. They paved the way for many future graduates. We pay tribute to them for having the courage to lead the way. Leah Yinger Carrithers Deceased 20 Leah Yinger In 1918, classes were held in the old court house. SHOINdf % Jubilant Juniors Prepare For Last Year The juniors did a great job in the fall magazine sales project and sold more magazines than any previous class. Individuals also brought credit to the entire class in the fields of sports, music, science and service. With the selection of class rings, improvement of scholastic records, and the production of a wonderful Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom, the juniors are well prepared for their responsibilities as seniors next year. All of the forty-six sophomores were proud to be sophomores and looked forward to their junior year, a step closer to graduation. In developing their potential, their responsibilities will increase next year. Members of the Class of '70 must take over more responsibilities in all school activities. One of their greatest thrills was ordering their class rings. This, the sophomore year, was a period for growing, of maturing, and getting ready for next year's greater responsibilities. The year was full of parties and class pro- jects that were enjoyed by all of the class members. The freshmen boys experienced a new trend in JHS sports; this year they had individual foot- ball and basketball schedules. The frosh girls participated in Y-teens, Pep Club, and Girl's Chorus. To be able to compete with other teams, our novice team learned that they had to be fast thinkers, hard workers, and had to be able to control their emotions. The Jerms helped transform the the mod decorated gym into a swinging happening which will be long remembered in the hearts and minds of JHS students. Of course, this was just one of the several projects in which the seniors earned money for their trip. After much planning the se- niors finally left Johnson at 10:00 P. M. , April 21. Sunday night was the beginning of a week of fun for the seniors. They tried to get some sleep during the trip to Kirkwood, but found it almost im- possible. As a whole, the weather was nice so they were able to use the water facilities to the fullest extent. Their sponsors, Miss Ott, Mr. Downs, Mr. and Mrs. Staker, and Coach and Mrs. Morris, kept a close watch on diem and every- one had a good time. Kansas City was their destination after leaving Kirkwood on Saturday Morning.
