THE TROJAN 1966-67 STANTON COUNTT HIGH SCHOOL JOHNSON, KANSAS Foreword Our world today is progressing so fast it is often hard to keep up with it. One of the major effects progress has had on our school was the unification which took place this year. Johnson High today is larger than ever before; therefore, it is more able to offer the students a better educa- tion. Education is becoming more and more important in today's world of rockets, computers, and instantaneous world-wide communication. In order to maintain the American way of life, to keep America the great free country it is, we must have a strong, patriotic, and well-educated people to carry on the fight for each individual's freedom. The people responsible for America's tomorrow will come from the ranks of today's students. This book is compiled of excerpts from our life at J. H. S. as we prepare ourselves for the demands of the space- age. 2 Table Of Contents Administration..............4 Senior.....................13 Junior.....................21 Sophomore..................25 Freshman...................29 Activities.................33 Grade School...............63 In Memoriam 79 A Message From Superintendent John W. Harper Accomplishments in any school system in this complex world depend upon the cooperation of the students, teachers, principals, superintendent, parents, and the school board. Combining five districts into one smoothly operating unit, dedicated to create a learning atmosphere aimed toward education, is no easy task. Proper facilities and equipment must be provided. Personnel that will instill in you an inquisitiveness about the world and its life, plus an understanding of its moral, spiritual, and cultural values are needed to develop the proper kind of education. Education is painful, continual, and difficult work to be done by kind- ness, firmness, by warning, by precept, by praise, but above all, by example. Abraham Lincoln once said, I will study and get ready, and perhaps my chance will come. Follow the advice of this great scholar. Sincerely, John W. Harper Mrs. Iris Lane, Secretary 4 From The Principal's Desk Elmer B. Vecera The education of our youth is more than a men- tal process, but involves the adaptation of youth to the world in which he finds himself and yet equips him to critically evaluate this world and to provide leadership and courage to initiate necessary changes. Self evaluations must be made not only in com- parison with the accom- plishments of others, but in the light of one's own best efforts. A school annual is a summary or review of school activities for the year. I am sure that a student will look at his an- nual in future years and recall many of his school experiences. John Harper, Supt. ; Harry Bilbery; Warren Kilgore; John Wartman, Pres.; Eugene Friesen; Lewis Shore, Vice Pres. ; Wayne Snell. The Faculty MR. ELMER B. VECERA Principal, Bookkeeping This year was a busy year for all of our thirteen teachers. They had bigger classes, more assignments to give, and more papers to grade. Besides teaching, MR. CLARENCE MORRIS, JR. the teachers took part in sponsoring Drivers Education, Science classes, plays, projects, and other ac- tivities. The faculty was always ready and willing to give advice and guid- ance to any student who needed it. Teachers have a big part in mold- ing the lives of students. They help the students to grow in knowledge and skill and to face the responsibilities which must be faced from day to day. MR. NORMAN STANLEY Music MR. GARY PARKS Mathematics MRS. Alva Hammond, Derrel Younger, Bill Baxter, Gene Houston, and Ada Whittington have been kept busy taking high school students to and from school. Without Mr. Bill Lauppe, custo- dian, things would soon fall apart atJHS. Mrs. Edna Taylor, an assistant to Mr. Lauppe, also helps things run smoothly in the lunchroom. 8 Language Arts And Library The language arts classes were kept very busy this year by editing the Trojan newspaper, working on the annual, form- ing clubs, and doing many other various activities. The English classes were taught this year by Mrs. Davidson and Mrs. Cheno- weth, with Mrs. Davidson teaching junior and senior English and literature and fresh- man literature. Mrs. Chenoweth taught freshman grammar and sophomore English and literature. Mrs. Chenoweth, a junior sponsor, also directed the junior class play, and Mrs. Davidson, a senior sponsor, di- rected the senior play, the one-act contest play, the speech contestants, and was the adviser for the newspaper and the year- book. Mr. Dietrick, a freshman sponsor, was well occupied with teaching the Spanish and German classes and conducting the Spanish and German clubs. He plans to study abroad in Germany this summer. The library was well organized this year under the direction of the school librarian, Mr. Herndon. The library was increased this year by moving the books out into the study hall. The sophomores had Mr. Herndon as a sponsor this year. Mrs. Chenoweth answers Cindy's grammar question. Donka, says Tommy Stanton after being helped Mr. Herndon spent long hours taking inventory of by Mr. Dietrick. the library. 9 Science, Math, And Home Ec. Coach Morris, teacher of General Science and also senior sponsor, had some interesting experiences with the freshmen this year. They did some dissecting and gave oral reports in class. He coached Cross Country, Track and was assistant Football coach. Mr. Downs, the sophomore spon- sor and new science teacher, taught Biology, chemistry, and physics. A big project in the biology class was the dissecting of a pig. Getting through the year without any explosions was felt to be a big triumph by the Chemistry students. This was Miss Jordan's first year of teaching. She taught Homemaking I, II, III and IV, teaching cooking, sew- ing, and home living in each class. Besides spending much time with her classes, she was kept busy with her task of sponsoring the Junior Class. Mr. Parks spent his days calcula- ting math problems. He taught algebra I and II, geometry, and trigonometry. As freshman class sponsor, he helped with the class treasury. Go ahead, Bobby, it won't bite! says Coach Morris during class. Miss Jordan helps Mary Sue Harmon and Roetta These senior boys enjoy solving the problems that Floyd with pattern layouts in Home Ec III. Mr. Parks assigns. 10 Social Science And Business Ed. Mr. Staker points out the location of territories to the American History class. Mr. Staker, teacher of American History, World History, and Constitu- tion, discussed current events with his students and helped them try to solve the many problems involved in the world today. Besides teaching, Mr. Staker had the big job of being one of the senior class sponsors. Many of the interesting peculiari- ties of the world were revealed to the Sociology and International Relations students under the instruction of Mr. Herndon. In Sociology, an unusual study was made of a teen-age girl who had been raised by a wolf pack. Coach Ogletree, teacher of eco- nomics, typing, and shorthand, spent many hours listening to the clicking sound of beginner typists. Coach, who transferred from Manter High School, was kept busy as a Freshman class sponsor by helping them adjust to the new life of high school. He was head Basketball coach. Many hours were spent by the Bookkeeping students as they tried to solve the difficulties that popped up during class while working in their workbooks. Mr. Vecera, principal, helped out by showing the future accountants how to make the debits equal the credits. These boys study International Relations with Mr. Herndon's guidance. Everyone concentrates in Mr. Ogletree's typing Beth Canny and Janice Fields have Mr. Vecera class, while trying to keep from making mistakes. help them balance a bookkeeping problem. 11 P.E., Drivers Training, Shop Coach Ogletree's girls' P.E. class enjoys building Coach Morris umpires a boys' freshman P.E. class pyramids. baseball game. Coach Morris shows David Ford that it's what's under the hood that counts. Get it J-U-S-T right, Charles, says Coach Younger. Mr. Ogletree has kept the girls' P. E. class busy with basketball, track, gymnastics, and exercises. This was the first year that girls' physical edu- cation was used as a whole year-one credit course. The boys in the P. E. class stayed in shape with the help of Coach Morris. In adverse weather, the boys enjoyed doing gymnastics stunts in the gym. Coach Morris, known for his calm nerves, also conducts Driver's Training. Besides learning how to drive, the stu- dents learned different parts of the motor. Coach Younger, junior class spon- sor, was new here this year. He taught shop, woodworking, mechanical draw- ing, and crafts. He was head Football coach. 12 Seniors We Seniors finished our high school life this year and it was a very busy finish. Besides the Sen- ior Play which more than filled the auditorium, there was the Penny Carnival, a bake sale, and car washes. These money-making projects were aimed at the highlight of the year, the Senior Trip. During the last week of April, the Seniors were in Kirk- wood Lodge, Kansas City, and Wichita. Seniors took part in school activities also. We brought home two I's from State Music Contest and three I's from State Speech Contest. Experienced Seniors filled most of the important positions in sports, band, and Stuco. It was also the Class of 67 who did the school paper and this annual. Now we leave all this behind for the incoming Seniors and start a new phase of life. This transition is evidenced in our class motto, Finished-Yet Beginning . Our beginnings will be varied; jobs, marriage, and college, to list a few. We can now look back with fond memories and look forward with great anticipation. Juniors Look Ahead The Juniors began their first year as upper class- men with the magazine sales. After the sales came the big decision of choosing class rings. The Juniors were then in charge of the Christmas program. They continued their activities with the annual Junior play. Following the play came the biggest event of the year, the Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom. Three Coins in a Fountain was the theme for the Banquet and The Apostles played for the Prom. This was the final big event of the Junior year and con- cluded one of the busiest years for the Class of '68. 22 George Anderson Marsha Anderson Bobby Ashida K. They carried out their theme with brightly colored decorations of geometric designs. Their costumes ranged all the way from matching skirts and blouses for school to evening dresses fit for a Prom. The girls have learned difficult tayloring procedures as well as the basics. Following the style review punch and cookies were served. This event brought to a close a successful year of Home Economics. Three Coins in a Fountain was the theme for the Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom this year. With the refreshing, tinkling sound of a fountain in the back- ground, the banquet got under way. The atmosphere of a cool evening in a beautiful park seemed very real to everyone. The delicious meal included steak, baked potatoes, green beans, rolls, a salad, and strawberry shortcake. The speaker for the evening was Mr. La Verne Fiss, attorney, who gave us helpful hints to be not merely one of the coins in a fountain, but to overcome conformity. The program also included a song by Anne Grantham and a piano solo by John Staker. The Apostles from Wichita played for the Prom and made the evening enjoyable for everyone. Penny Carnival Leads To Senior Trip After much work and planning, the Senior Penny Carnival, which is becoming an annual event, got under way. The carni- val was held in the 4-H building and included many booths and games. One feature of the carnival was the dunking board which proved to be very popular. After the excitement was over, the Seniors found out that the money that was made amounted to enough to cover the rest of the expenses of the Senior trip. The big trip began at 3:00 A. M. on Monday morning, April 24th. After catching up on our sleep while riding the bus, we arrived at Kirkwood Lodge. Everyone was ready for swimming and boating, but the rainy weather that greeted us on the first two days cancelled our plans. The last day at Kirkwood turned out to be full of sunshine, so we had one day to enjoy the water. Our sponsors, Mrs. Davidson, Mr. Staker, Coach Morris, Mr. and Mrs. Shepard, and Eulah Garrison, kept us out of trouble and proved to be a lot of fun. From Kirkwood, we went to Kan- sas City for one night and then on to Wichita for our last day. From there we came home. Sponsors enjoy the sunny afternoon. Our home away from home for a week. As a flower grows and sends out its fragrant sweetness, blooms and dies in due time; so our lives begin as a small plant and grow to maturity. With reverent love and honor for her, whose life was so sweet and true, so unselfish and so kind; whose heart was a garden of love, sympathy and interest that refreshed and strengthened, we express our appreciation of the life she lived among us. We cannot soon forget her happy and cheerful face. She has won by love, the love of all and with those binding qualities we will ever hold our fondest memories of her. 9 % '■?. .-v Index Amerine, Kathy 31, 52 Anderson, Georgell 22,23,41 Anderson, Joe 10, 15, 44, 45, 46, 51 Anderson, Marsha 22, 23, 35, 36, 38, 39, 41,43, 45, 46,47, 52 Asebodo, Sebia 10,27,41 Ashida, Bobby 23, 38. 41, 43 Austin, Linda 15, 38, 40, 41, 42, 46, 50, 51 Barber, K.
