Under the direction of a new band instructor, Mr. Loren Alexander, the Johnson High School Band of 1957- 58 opened their marching activities by accepting an invitation to appear in the opening parade of the annual Kansas State Fair, at Hutchinson. This exciting and long-remembered activity was followed by the annual trek south to the Panhandle A. M. Homecoming parade at Goodwell. Oklahoma. All the rest of the winter was spent working on our two numbers for the District Music Festival at Dodge City. After the presentation of the numbers for the home folks, everyone was wondering what rating would be received. To the elation of every band member and all the home folks, the Judges said Johnson High School deserved the superior rating of I. Because of the loss of six Seniors, the band will be looking for a new drum majorette as well as someone else to fill the chairs that have been occupied for four short happy years by people who have thoroughly enjoyed their participation in the high school band. To climax the band activities for 1957-58 the band again exhibited their music and maneuvers in the Pioneer Day Celebrations at Guymon, Oklahoma and at Johnson. Front Row, Left to Right: Loretta K.. It says here — that. Oh, hello. So long, Wilbur. Leila Brooks, Curtis Smith, Garry Plummer, Harold Shore. I’ve been in training for three days . Sandra Troutman Yvonne McGowen, Don Ruth. What do you think I’m doing”? Leila Brooks Well, I don't take a bubble-bath with the door open, Clyde. Ae C When contest play time rolled around during the term of 1957-1958, Mr. H. E. Prentice, contest play director, knew that he wanted something different this year to present at the dramatic festival. Few people realized how different The Critic , by Val Clark, was going to be and what the reactions of the viewers would be. The Critic , a play where the participants come from the audience, won the rating of a II at the League Meet at Lakin, and the rating of a I at the District Contest at Dodge City. This last rating entitled Johnson to take its contest play to the state contest where the judge gave the rating of a IV. The high school students will long remember the acting ability of the lovers, Judy Baugh and Bill Hatton; the struggle between the sheriff, Don Ruth, and the banker, Garry Plummer; and the directing conflict between Darrel Ruth and Curtis Ramsay. l57 u SrAnlKD H PSOnC XS AS HAtJVSOtA bou s N A p S CHuVC,WAAte, KX A6U -unm«s Foft t t ih£t-Dft Me BfWquer I} Guess u rto ' £ AlOAj r 0fcfo £- KJ ZltJvy A. 1 7- « to 8RMT A r ?£E.
