The Troja iirH 1956 STANTON COUNTY COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOL JOHNSON, KANSAS In Memory of Joe Whipple, a former classmate, who died of polio in 1954. His courage and his pleasant personality will always be an inspiration to those of us who were his friends. Sunset and evening star And after that the dark! And may there be no moaning of farewell. When I embark. For though from out our bourne of Time and Place The flood may bear me far, I hope to see my Pilot face to face When I have crossed the bar. --Tennyson 1956 Editor—Glen Shore Asst. Homecoming Queen Mary and Walter Margaret Weis Junior Karen Aller Freshman Mother- Daughter Banquet f m B+i . • Class Prophecy I, a former teacher of Johnson High School, decided to travel to Johnson after ten years to visit my former students and to see whether the Seniors of 1956 had fulfilled their ambitions. My first stop was at the high school where I found Pearl Arnold teaching home economics. She is waiting for Leland to decide upon his life's work which has so far consisted of just deciding. I leave Pearl and down town glimpse a young man with flaming red hair hurrying into the Pioneer office. I find that Wesley O'Banion has finished a course in journalism and has taken over the paper. He is still making trips to Syracuse. From Wesley I learn that his old pal, Duane Kippes with the allur- ing dimples, is thrilling all the girls in his latest motion picture. I went to the drug store where 1 find Karen Nafziger still busily plying her trade behind the soda fountain. She told me that she had never married as she had never found a perfect man and is about ready to settle for anyone because she is so tired of working. She tells me that Gail and Frank are still in the Navy as seamen first class and have hopes of gaining a better rank in their next twenty year enlistment. I also learn from Karen that Janet has never married because the dust storms have prevented Gene from building her dream house. Upon leaving the drug store I hear music pouring from the Stork Club. Duane Snook's name is plastered across the front as the featured vocalist. Duane tells me that he has taken up singing so that he can support Sandra since the irrigation well broke down on his ten acre farm. We find Charles Raney loafing on a street corner. He tells me that he hasn’t been so successful at farming and is still saving so that he and Judy can get married. We inquire about Glen Shore and Charles tells us that Glen finally married the little freshman of '56. Karen is giving music lessons while Glen is waiting to be elected President of the United States. In search of other former students I traveled on west stopping for the night at a small town in Colorado. In a nearby trailer park there was a 60 foot trailer house and whom should I find but Pearl Lu! She told me that she had never been able to talk Everett into settling down. Now they had decided that their trailer was too small and were ready to trade for a longer one. On the outskirts of Reno, Nevada I noticed a building with the smell of burning food coming from the windows. Curiosity got the better of me and I went inside to find Mary Ellis and Donna Pepper. The girls told me they decided they would never get anywhere teaching elementary school so they had opened a homemaking school for bachelors. A tall young man rushed in to ask for a recipe and I men- tioned that he looked familiar. Donna told me he was the bachelor of the class of '56, Earl Arnold, who had finally given up women and was now taking a vacation from his ranch. Traveling north I came upon a large ranch, and standing at the gate was Walter Cockreham. He told me that finally he had gotten five oil wells, a million dollars and this ranch in Wyoming and felt he was financially well enough off so he and Clarice had gotten married recently. He also added that women could never be satisfied for now she wanted him to wire the house for electricity! Returning to Kansas I stopped fot the night at Lamed. Whom should I run into but Janis Martin! She is teaching gymnastics in the mentally ill ward of the state institution there but has high hopes of re- turning to New York where she can find some peace and quiet. Janis tells me that John had become a great scientist and was now intent upon drilling a hole through the earth. Greta was discouraging him because she was tired of feeding the six little Collingwoods beans. I decided that the future of the seniors of '56 was well in hand so made my way home with a happy heart.
