Stanton (bounty (Community School 3°ii ndon, S anSaS Some tears there are that lie Too deep for men to see, Or seeing understand such tears Are those we have for him. Today and through the years Until our span of life is done We still can see the smile That was so much a part of him. His voice we still can hear; It held the love of life, The welcome touch, For those of us he left who care. Someone has said, We die a little, too When death comes to A well beloved friend. Beneath the mound of flowers, We leave something, too Out of ourselves-- That's missing to the end. Somehow the long days Pass on into time, The Loom of Life goes Steadily on and on. • Jn OF OUR CLASSMATE DONNIE RICHARDS WHO DIED ON MAY 1, 1951 m emory Weaving a pattern FOLLOWING POLIOMYELITIS That holds beauty still E'en though the one Lovely strand is gone. --Author Unknown Principal, E, G. Ila June McKinney Loudly We Sing................... Rosa Lee K., Verla L., LuAnn H. Senior Saturday -- At 9:00 this morning 10 of the 13 seniors started to Texas from Johnson. They reached Wheeler at 12:00 and stopped and ate their picnic lunch. Then they continued on to Anson, Texas where they were to stay the night. After getting rooms and eating supper they piled into cars again and journeyed to Abilene (23 Miles) to watch the Big State Jamboree. They got a big thrill from hearing their name men- tioned over the loudspeaker by the M. C. After they returned to Anson, the group from Dodge City arrived. As it was nearly 12:00 and there was another day of hard riding ahead, to bed we went. Sunday --At 9:30 this morning we started from Anson, Texas to Corpus Christi. The group made it to Fredricksburg for lunch and then took off again. There was lots of beautiful scenery along the way. After finding our motel, we went to supper--fish was the big item. Then the Amuse- ment Park came next. Everyone had a fine time and was ready for an- other big day. Monday -- This morning the women went to town to go shopping while the men went to numerous spots along the beach. After lunch, the kids and the women! went swimming. A local newspaper photographer was on the scene to snap a few pictures. At 5:00 we boarded the Sally D and went for the wettest boat-ride human beings have ever experienced without being drowned. After a short snack, we took off for town and a good comfortable chair in the movies. Tuesday — Port Aransas was our destination today. We left early this morning with Mr. Baldwin of the shore patrol as our guide. We swam and collected shells all morning. The high spot of the day was the ride in the ferry boat. Duane M. was stung by a rather timid looking jelly-fish, but all in all, it was fun!! We reached Corpus about 2:00 washed the salt and sand off and went out to dinner. A trip to a corn-processing factory was on the agenda, but it was closed by the time we were ready to go. The girls went shopping instead and the boys listened to. Mr. Baldwin tell of his adventures on the Shore Patrol. After supper the group divided, but everyone was in bed pretty early. Wednesday -- This morning bright and early, we are.on our way back to San Antonio. First stop is at the Alamo. Since Jim Garrison had some morning classes, he couldn't get away to meet us, so Reid’s car went to the base to see him. After eating lunch and wandering about in the big department stores, we met again to go to Del Rio where we were to spend the night. In stead, 3 cars went to the zoo and one car continued on to Del Rio. The zoo was reportedly the best the kids had ever seen. SENIOR TRIP - CONTINUED ; They reached Del Rio about 9:00 and after changing clothes we took a jaunt into Old Mexico. We wandered around in the curio shops of Villa Acuana and came back to Del Rio. Thursday --We are on the road again. This time we are headed for Carlsbad, New Mexico. We stopped at the LookOut points along the Pecos River, but still reached Sanderson in time for lunch. We reached Carlsbad about 5:00 decided to go swimming. After a brief but decidedly cooling dip in die 45° water, we all cleaned up and went out to dinner. Several restaurants were visited. After dinner we watched T.V. and at 10:00, decided to go to a movie. We were all snug in bed by 1:00. An- other day closer to home. Friday -- At 8:30 we were waiting to walk into the famed Carlsbad Caverns. The cave was damp and the long walk was both tiring and en- joyable. We ate lunch at 10:30 about 850 feet underground. We reached the surface after a ride in an elvator about 12:00. After peeking through the curio shops, we took off again for Carlsbad. We went straight to the lake where we spent the rest of the early afternoon swimming. After a stop at a Dairy Queen, we were ready to start for Portales. We reached Portales after 4 hours of steady driving, ate dinner and went to numerous night spots. Tommorrow we start home!! Saturday -- We-all got up early this morning. Today is The Day, we go home!! John Shore's car took the lead and reached Johnson about 12:30, Trostle's car was next at 2:15 and then the other two cars about 20 min- utes later. We had a swell time--but golly--Johnson City never looked so good'! Gazing into our crystal ball, we look ten years into the future to try and locate some of the long lost seniors of '54. Our spherical jug falls into action and dim shadows begin to fall into the center of the ball. We hear the clamor of little children and what appears to be an elementary class in a school. A piano is heard and the soft melodious tones of what we recognize as the former Evelyn Stanfield’s voice. Eddie is teaching music to help support her husband, Gerald Nafziger, and the four little Nafziger's, incidentally, all boys. Our next scene is the kitchen of a modern housewife. On the floor are four little blond, towheaded Ellis kids. We recognize the woman as the former Fuzzy Carrithers. It seems one of little Lou’s diapers has lodged in the electric dryer and she is having trouble getting it out. Little Lou is one year old. Phyllis who thinks of the wel- fare of her kids weighs a mere 90 pounds, but you have to give credit to these modern mothers. As dinner time rolls around up pops Mr. Ellis who has been working very hard on his farm in Morton county. He has acquired a whole 60 acres for his family to live on, but due to the dirt has not raised a crop for the last eight years. His wife has been taking in washings for that period of time and has done a fairly good job of supporting the family of six. As our next light appears we are on a locomotive moving rapidly across the middle west. There in the cab stands none other than Jimmie Jellison who we understand has been studying engineering at K.U. for the past ten years. We see in die paper that he has finally graduated to chief fire stoker on the Sante Fe Railroad. Next we see a pretty, shapely, little blond headed girl lying on Miami beach. Who can she be? Ah yes, we can tell by the color of the toenail polish that it is Molly Sosa. We understand that the Beachcombers voted her as the thing they would most like to pick up on the beach. Accounting for her blond hair, someone told her she looked like Marilyn Monroe so she bleached her hair to fit the part. The light fades and we again hear voices out of the future. We hear die noise of an irrigation pump and then see ragged and weary Eugene Shore who has been trying to perfect a new species of skinless peas. After ten straight crop failures he is on his last leg. Eugene, who had to buy a bulldozer merely for the purpose of pushing the dirt away from his door after a dust storm is mortgaged up to his neck. Well, we simply can't stand this dismal scene and so the light fades. Next we hear the hustle and bustle of carnival life. A barker is yelling. Who is that fellow who hasn't shaved for a week? Why its none other than our old friend Duane McGowen, who is now working as the tattoed man in the carnival. He tells us that Verla is right around the corner running a baseball throw game and the little McGowens are picking up the bottles. What is this we see coming into the ball? A little house north of Johnson and yes, there is the name on the mailbox : Marie Collings Winger, Boss, and Dicky Winger, hired man. We hear that Marie has been trying to get her husband to clean the dirt out of the windows and paint the house, but he is so busy trying to get his de- gree in goo husbandry, (that’s PLANT study) that he can't get around to it. Even since Marie stopped helping him back in '55 he hasn’t been able to keep up his grades. Next we journey to a small high school somewhere in Stanton county. We can tell by the big elevator that it is Big Bow, Kansas. What's this? We are on the inside of the school house and in the principals office. And who is the principal? Well, its old Reverend Reid, (Jack). He has been teaching for five years, and has finally graduated his first class. Who's that old man wobbling down the hall with a broom in his hand? He just cleared his throat. No it can't be, but it is, Prof. Reid. He is working as the janitor in his son's school. We would like to stay but our journey must go on. Suddenly the room gets stifling hot. What is the cause? Here is a picture coming into view in our crystal ball. It’s something big. Good grief, its an elephant, and the girl on the back is, its Lois Ann. She always said she was going to reform someone, and it looks like she had to go all the way to the Belgian Congo to do it. Seems she has been preaching to the natives (who can't understand a thing she says) and has saved a thousand souls from, from,-------------. These boys ought to be used to fire and brimstone. Whew!! From the looks of things Cokkie (Keith) McGehee is still making his trips to Ulysses. That's where his wife lives but he still has to come to Johnson every morning at 5 a. m. to do the chores. He has been late to work every day for the last two years, but the boss at the Ulysses rendering plant doesn’t mind much. Next we are in New York City at the entrance of a big building. Now we can see the neon sign on the top. Home of Jared Grantham, the singing surgeon. Instead of using anathesia on his women patients, he merely sings Stardust and they swoon right off to sleep. He has really made his money singing Shortnin'Bread at Joe's Beanery. Going into the building, who should we see but the former Nancy Trostle. She's had a half-dozen names since we knew her at J. H.S., but the current one is Skatapasdy or something like that. He has fallen down on his alimony payments so she asked her old pal, Jared, for a job as hat-check girl. By the way she is the only girl worker in the building who has a pair of mink tights. As our final vision fades away we realize that the future of the '54 seniors is well in hand. 35 CU Will We, the Senior Class of 19 54, being in our right mind, do bequeath and bequit, leave, give and get rid of the following members of the Senior Class and to put in their high place these lowly creatures: To the on-coming sophomore class we will our honor roll standing.
