California sounded so interesting 1 thought I'd just go see it. and very much to my surprise I ran into some of my former students. The first night in Calif., my husband and I went to a very ritzie club known as “The High Hat- and as we entered we heard the appealing voice of Frances Edwards with Ronald Kay and his Kayettes. After picking our way thru the swooners lying on the floor, we were able to talk about old times. We find Frankie is President of United Daughters of Spinsterhood and Ronald Kay was married to some girl by the name of Joey. After spending a pleasant evening dining, and dancing, we returned to our hotel room wondering what lay in store for tomorrow. There was some debate about where we should spend this day. but as usual the woman always gets the last word so we find Jack and 1 going to the races, just as 1 wanted to do. After looking the nags over carefully, we placed our bet on Galloping Whizzcr , and as we were discussing the situation over a cup of hot coffee, we noticed one of my ole pests, check thatl It’s Galard Lane. Of all things, who ever thought he would be a doctor! And a horse doctor at that. However we didn’t get to talk to Galard very long, because just as we were in the middle of our conversation about the Santa Anita, Martha, his wife called out from their near-by cottage, hurry honeyl Jr. Just swallowed his allowance. We were sorry to see Galard hurry away, but we were glad Jr’s allowance only .amounted to ten cents, we had high hopes the dime wouldn't lodge. After the races we happened to bump into a nice looking young man. and I thought he looked familiar, OH I 1 remember now. it's Eugene Cave. He invited us to go down to Hollywood Blvd. with him where he was the judge of the Rose Bowl Queen. We always knew Eugene liked Figures, but not that type. In his spare time he goes to Medical School, and his favorite subject is campus-ology. Before we retired for the evening we decided to drive out by the fruit farms, and get some fresh fruit. We stopped at a nice looking little farm house, and a sweet little house wife came out with a basket of oranges on her arm. and 1 was nearly swept off my feet to see the former Nancy Daniels. She and O. W. are living on an orange farm and of all things are raising pears, you know! Twins, two boys and two girls. We had more surprises in one day than is good for the average persons heart so we retired to our room early, as we opened the door, we found some snoop had ransacked ou drawers and made away with some of our precious jewels. We rushed down to the police station and reported the theft to the F.B. 1. and who should be the chief, but George Hatton. He was doing a good job of keeping the cells full, and he told us be was waiting for Nancy Trostle to graduate from McPhearson College, so they could get manied. Well, we were getting tired of California, so we decided to go back thru the Sunflower State and see if we couldn’t find the rest of my former students. On our way back from the coast we passed thru an army camp, we stopped and who should walk off the rifle range, but Carl Thompson. He was the Captain making such progress, we asked him if he had hitched his wagon to a star. No, to a pretty little wild cat, and in her spare time she practices her boxing technique on me. We believe him, he had a great big black eye. As we were listening to the radio on our way to Kansas we heard a soft tender voice, it sounded so appealing, we couldn't help but listen. It was a program braodcasted from C-L-I-N-T, Clint Texas. It was DeVoonc Wilson. After listening to his sermon on the Good Things In Life we appreciated each other more, and we had one more graduate of the 52 class to mark off our list. We were only sorry we couldn't talk to him. At last the streamliner The Trojan pulled into Saunders. Wcbcganbygoinglntoacafetoeatlunch. When we entered we uw -The Saunders Globe Trotters and who should we find coaching them but Laverne Flss. He was sure proud of the basketball history they had made. We can't blame him, after all when the first five were his own kids, he did have something to brag about. Next we went to Johnson: 1 was so surprised to see a beautiful new high school building. 1 began to think 1 was born 20 years too soon. Jack wanted to make a phone call so we went to the telephone office and lo and behold there sat he former Betty Lou Hargrove. She is now the head operator, and between saying number please and trying to teach the two little Wiens all about Texas, the biggest state in the union, she keeps very busy. While we were waiting for the phone call to get thru who should come in but Bill Bycr. He had to make a long distance call to Kansas City about some grade A“ cattle. He tells us he is a big time rancher and he had a little shop in town where be works occasion ally. His business isn't too flourishing, it's so seldom any body from western Kansas kicks the bucket that Bill had lo rely on cattle if he wanted a very comfortable living. After his call was thru, be sa;d he was so glad he had seen us, and he guessed be better be shoveling off. Lovena. the former Phipps girl does the engraving on the tombs Bill sells, so we were told, and since the Flying Farmers Airport. “ is so close to her shop she does radio tower control work besides making designs for French bathing sutis. Big Bow is next on our list. We journeyed north of there a few miles and noticed a large sign. It read: Snell Univet|ity For YOUNG Men. Remembering Florcne in the class of 52 we stopped in to see if it could be owned by Florene Snell. It was, and she told us the age limit was 27 and only men could attend. She didn't teach, but she was the librarian. Telling her about our trip she decided to be of assistance and told us we could find David Ruth a few miles south of Big Bow. Driving into his yard we saw a large but nice bam. and a dairy barn at that. It was surrounded by milk cows. Red and white ones to boot. We went thru his dairy barn and talked about the other students we had seen on the trip. When we told him Lovena was manied. he Mid that's nothing, I married that McKinney girl 3 years ago. Our time was getting short, so we started back to Big Bow. We stopped down at the Co-op elevator to buy some gas and who should make out ules tickets but Lola Jean, used-to-be-Oiler. After majoring in Home Ec. at K-State, she ended up being a Marines wife, and a bookkeeper. She told us she could make all the books balance with the exception of one. the checkbook. Lola was interested in our trip report, but she immediately drew our attention to Leon, Carol. Mana and Mearl. Then we realized we had missed them. Knowing not where to look for them we decided to go over to Dodge City and see if Boogi the fortune teller could help us. We crossed her palm with silver and then she let us gaze into her crystal ball. Our eyes traveled the Atlantic Ocean and landed in the heart of the African Congo. At last our eyes came to rest on a little grass hut with a sign uying “Big Time Game Hunters. Mr. and Mrs. Mearl Morris came out and Mona had Jr. in her arms, while Mearl was backing Jr's pet lion off with a chau. Mona looked so refreshed in her grass skirt, while Mearl looked extra cool in his little knee pants. They looked real healthy and we were only sorry we couldn’t visit with them. Alter we were thru feasting our eyes in the crystal ball, Boogi told us Mearl was employed by the American Animal Society and they sent him to Africa to study monkeys. His chief problem was to find out why people resemble monkeys so, in their looks and their habits. Boogi told us he couldn't see Carol and Leon thru the crystal ball because of the iron curtain. But she told us they were well, and that Leon was working on a secret mission in Russia. The out come of which he hoped would tell us what Russia has that we would be better off if they didn't have. While Leon is trying to find some more Information about these facts, his wife Carol sends a dally report to congress concerning his progress.
