ii THE FCDGTBALL STORY When the fmal statxstncs of the 1952 football season were tabulated they showed the Orroles had seven wms and one defeat The Orange and Black men ran up a total of 170 pomts for themselves whrle holdmg the opposxtnon to a mere S2 Thts ns the best record establnshed by the Orxoles smce 1945 The boys got along well as a unnt and had a good coach under whom they learned a wrde vanety of plays settmg up a good defense agamst ground plays m partxcular The team placed second rn the Clover belt Conference The leadmg ball carrler for the 147 pound lme was Rex Rxxford who crossed the goal lme for no less than I3 touchdowns Four of the squad ulxan Damslu Doc Overgard Art Ondal and Rex Rnxford made honorable mentxon on the All Northwest Wnsconsm team The ftrst game of the season was a test of the new coachs abrlnty It saw Rex make two touchdowns to lead the team to a 20 0 conquest over the Regus B team The next week saw Rex keepmg up hrs torrxd pace by maltmg four touchdowns on runs of 10 8 1 78 ya ds Art Ondal made the other touchdown Stanley made 315 yards from thus game whlle holdmg Gilman to a mmus 17 The Gnlman boys were bug but Stan Iey stnll ran away with them The Cadott game demonstrated the teams abrlxty to come from be hxnd Wrth Stanley tranlmg 6 0 and only sux minutes to play Bubber Therrl went over from the one yard lme and Art Ondal luclted the poxnt to make xt 7 to 6 Wrth only two mnnutes to play Rxxford broke loose for 26 yards and a touchdown whxch coupled wrth fnne blocltmg on the part of Damskx and Rext made Cadott s Homecoming game a thnller The followmg game wnth the Eau Clanre B team set the Orxoles on the spot They were up agamst a team coached by a former coach of therr own coach and they wanted to make good They were a long txme gettmg started for the opposxtxon was good but they ended the game wrth a 21 0 score Art Ondal makmg three touchdowns and lucknng all three extra points The followxng Nenllsvllle game was a pushover Rex gal loped for three touchdowns rn thxs conquest and Stanley held Nenllsvrlles attack outsnde Stanleys 40 yard lme for the whole game Cornell s Home commg game was the roughest game of the season Both teams played hard but Stanley: wxnnnng streak held 21 7 Thorp had a good coach and a good team and lxlte Stanley came mto the game wxth an unbeaten record A couple of costly fumbles by Stanley and the sharp passnng of Jake Phnllnps Thorp quarterback led us to the only defeat of the season wnth a 26 0 score The last game saw the Orxoles rebound from the Thorp defeat to dump Owen 31 7 That was a happy enduag for a good season Total Pomts Rex Rlxford Art Ondal George Thesrl Tom Huls Boots Brandt Total ' , , , r . THE SEASON RECORD Forty candtdates answered the call for the fxrst basketball practxce th1s year Returnrng lettermen tmong them mclud ed Art Ondal Duck Knar Kxrk Mnlhgan Doc Overgard George Thetrl and Rex Rxxford The season was better than average with thnrteen wtns and seven losses The htghlrghts of the year were wrns over Colfax and Altoona m the Cloverbelt League The best game of the year found the Stanley Orloles agalnst the Eau Clatre Old Abes rn the Reglonal Tournament Golng into the frrst game of the regtonal Stanley was very much the underdog but the Orloles surprlsed the Old Abes and led them most of the way Wtth a m1nute and a half left to play the score was tted but then the home town team pulled away from the mspxred Orloles and went on to wm the game After the very f1ne game played agatnst Eau Clalre the Stan ley boys just couldnt br1ng themselves up for the Consola tton game agarnst Chtppewa The ftrst quarter was pretty even but from then on the Chtppewa Cards pulled away to a very one stded 76 43 vrctory Of the players who rematned on the squad Doc Overgard was the hugh scorer wtth Art Ondal second A closer resume of the season reveals the fact that the Stanley Ortoles lost thetr opentng game thus year when the Mondovl Buffaloes dropped them for a 60 52 score Agam after chalktng up four consecut1ve vtctorres agatnst Colfax 59 54 Wrthee 60 41 Cornell 55 48 and Nenllsvtlle 63 48 they fell to a strong and undefeated Thorp team wlth the sad score reading Thorp 66 Stanley 49 Recover1ng from the blow dealt by Thorp they met and eastly defeated the Cadott Cagers 65 53 Next they agatn met Colfax at Colfax and thts ttme the score was 77 50 ln favor of Colfax The Orxoles pulled themselves out of that ba slump to go up against Gtlman and came away wnth a 76 35 score to thetr advantage The Orange and Black men then tangled wrth Bloomer wh1ch has a reputatxon for havtng good teams and lost the game to the tune of 83 66 Thor came next and the fxnal score was Thorp 70 Stanley 58 As before we played Cadott next and as before we stung the Cadott Bees 65 40 Games wxth Owen Wtthee Netlls ville and Gtlman brought us the followxng scores tn our favor Owen 60 30 Wlthee 89 65 Nerllsvxlle 6153 and Grlman 71 42 Their wtnnmg streak deserted the Ortoles when they took ttme out for defeat at the hands of Cornell 62 48 but held good for the game wtth Fall Creek Thns game brought them a 70 60 score Thxs was an off n1ght for the boys stnce they were handtcapped by the very small gym The next game found Stanley knockrng off Owen 69 43 That vrctory game gave Stanley second place tn the Cloverbelt League Then the Ortoles took the measure of the Altoona Rarlroaders to decrde the thrrd and fourth places tn the Cloverbelt Tourna ment In an overt1me play they pulled away for a 66 59 v1c tory over the Rarlroaders and from then on the story rs the record of the regtonal The last prcture shows Leon Etten taktng a rebound away from Eau Clatre tn the tournament game . 2 ' . . , . . y ' l Y t V K Y , . .
