For the second straight year, the Stanford Varsity field hockey team has qualified for National Tournament competition, this year as champion from the Western Regional Division. An excellent display of performance on the field was exhibited throughout the season. This performance, directly a result of the superb athletic talent on the team, was more indirectly the manifestation of a unique spirit which bonded the girls together. From an excerpt in her journal, junior varsity field hockey member Jamie Grodsky expresses a feeling held by all involved in this year's hockey program: What is the team?...The team is not simply a set of insides, outsides, links, halfbacks, a sweep and a goalie; these are merely some of the conditions under which a team can be created. Rather than having spirit, the team is a spirit. trf Mlk 29

Jul Pt«4l Nobody said it couldn't be done. In fact, most knew it could. With the talent present on this year's varsity water polo team, a successful season was inevitable. As a coach full of coarse language, demanding workouts and enthusiastic determination, third year veteran Art Lambert helped guide the Cards to a 20-2 season record, a Pac-8 Championship and a National title. Of all factors that could be considered the reason for success, total team effort was probably the biggest contributing cause. It was this team effort put forth that brought down prevailing champions Cal and UCLA. Senior Chris Dorst, regarded as one of the world's top goalies, was directly responsible for keeping opponents' scores to a minimum. But men like Drew McDonald, Paul Clark, Doug Burke, Rick Johannsen, Marty Davis and Robby Arnold were force behind this season's powerhouse.
