UGLY Summer indolence was hard to give up while summer weather still blessed the campus. Only the urgency of the year's first midterms and papers drove people out of the sunshine and into the library. Whether they went actually looking for books or just to escape blaring stereos, they were finally drawn to that familiar sandstone mecca. For everyone needed their own space in which to study, but no one wanted to be really alone. That's why you went to UGLY. Most of the time you just read. And read some more. Scribbled. Frowned. Looked up. Looked around. Read more. Turned the page. Snapped your pencil point with deranged irritation as someone's yellow marking pen screeched across a nearby page. You took a walk. Leaned over the railing. No theatrical interludes tonight. Scholastic silence at all costs, said the librarians. Still, there had to be someone to talk to, even though no one else could really help anyway. In the end it all depended on you. At best, you whipped through your work with enthusiasm. At the very least, you plodded along and finished enough of it to get by. 22

Oi«« rat STANFORD 34 WASHINGTON 28 It was a perfect day for sitting in the stands and soaking up some rays, listening to reports from the California-Oregon State game or drinking beer. Anything had to be better than watching Stanford suffer its third straight fourth-quarter collapse against Washington. The Cards went into the fourth quarter of the UCLA game, the week before, with a 20-10 lead and then watched as the Bruins picked off four interceptions to score a 38-20 Pacific-8 opening win. Stanford had a comfortable 27-7 lead over the Huskies with two minutes left in the third quarter, but the Washington quarterback had other ideas. He led the Huskies to 21 fourth-quarter points to throw a scare into Stanford. But this time the Cardinals managed to hang on for a 34-28 win. Stanford quarterback Guy Benjamin, who had another good game completing 14 of 22 passes for 270 yards and one touchdown, was ejected from the game with 1:20 left for slugging a Husky defensive tackle. Quarterbacks have been open game this year in the NFL and college football, with costly injuries sidelining many signal callers. Violence is big this year-knocking quarterbacks out of the game in the NFL and college football, said Benjamin. ...But you've got to get violence out of college football. —Chris Baker 24
