LSJUMB If it were in my power to do so I would have Stanford leveled by bulldozers and the students and faculty scattered. I wish I were a large financial contributor to Stanford. It would give me great pleasure to cut you off. . . Only the decadence of the LSJUMB can elicit such poison from the pens of some spectators, yet still turn others into dancing, screaming, laugh- ing fools. As questionable as their musical precision may be, there is no question about their taste. The same intense energy that goes into the making of doctors, lawyers and engineers, once in band uniform, goes into projecting raunchiness on a grand scale. Belonging together only by virtue of a loose allegiance to red and white, the band takes the team's place on the field. Some might say they make up for it. Whatever the score, they strike up, the Dollies dance and the crowd responds in kind. Seemingly random and spontan- eous, their antics let us play the game too. Whether it be the Saturday afternoon spectacles or those midnight rallies, they're out to shock the pants off people. And they do it so well. For some, maybe too well. But then the band is lovable for just that. They remind us that nothing is too safe or too sacred—not our institutions, our heroes, our scandals, or ourselves. It's a good time. It's letting go. It's great! 10
