0 JOHN CASPER BRANN ER July 4, 1850--March 1, 1922 N the passing of Dr. Branner, Stanford loses a man who for over thirty years, as Professor of Geology, as Vice-President, President, and President-Emeritus, brought, with ever-increasing influence and pres- tige, honor to Stanford. He came to us widely recognized as scientist and ins iring teacher. Here he was at once recognized by colleagues and students as a leader of men, and his personal and professional qual- ities early attracted to his department many of the best students. Under his training andiniluence many of these developed scientific and practi- cal abilities which have placed them in the front rank of recognized ex- perts and teachers. Among the qualities which contributed to Dr. Branner's success as scientist and teacher were, notably, his uncompromising devotion to truth, his untiring zeal for work, his deep interest in his students, and the faith he placed in them-a faith which challenged their best efforts. These characteristics, with his earnestness, sincerity, self-sacrificing spirit of hel fulness, sympathetic companionshilp, and genial humor, helped to malze him the respected scientist and eloved leader. To all who knew him his personality will remain a precious memory and his example an inspiration. J. M. STILIIMAN.
