FOREWORD The QUAD purports to be an interpretive record of a Stanford year. To transcribe the events of l92l-l922 to the pages of this book and to present a faithful pictorial history of the last twelve months has been our aim. The staff has not been content, however, with tabulating statistics or com- piling photographs. The past few months have formed a period to which future students at Stanford will look back and say: This movement began in '22, or, that building was completed in '2l. The drift toward vital changes, apparent for some time, was pronounced during the year now con- cluding. The staff hopes that in some degree these pages interpret the past year and indicate the road along which Stanford is progressing. We take no particular' pride in pointing out departures in this QUAD from previous year-books. The QUAD, if truly representative of campus life, varies as Stanford changes. The elimination or absorption of four departments of former QUADS and the institution of five new ones are important only as they indicate a progressing university with an emphasis lately stressed on certain ac- tivities. A few departures have been made, such as a record of scholastic life, in order that the book be complete in its chronicle of the year. Changes, as the substitution of senior for junior pictures, were made'to keep Stanford to the fore in college journalism. In this, the one page on which the editor will not allow the censoring blue pencil of the staff, he wishes to express a genuine appreciation of the help of editorial and managerial assistants. Editorial assistance is a rather abstract phrase. There was nothing abstract, however, in the aid necessary to fill 632 pages when every page required the assistance of from one to ten people. The term manager usually connotes economies of cents, but the present man- ager has not viewed his position as a profit making opportunity. Without the appreciation he showed of the editorial viewpoint, this book would lack many of its more expensive features. If the 1923 QUAD reflects the atmosphere of the Farm and the ideals which vitalizve the Stanford Spirit it has in that measure succeeded. THE EDITOR
